Unfortunately that's what they are trained to do due to the massive stock loss if you owned a shop wouldn't ypu check out the large bags and carriers??
but is only needed for those leaving, not if you go through a checkout at the side as obvious you have paid for them. And honestly never had anyone do more than a glance and actually not check inside my bag.
 
I don't find it quicker at all in my local, its awfully congested and the lanes block a few aisles of products that can not be accessed unless you are in line to pay and these weave in and out and around and at times have been down as far as the back of the shop.

I have no problem with bag checking, but to have the checkouts in the centre of the store was a very silly idea! That's why I don't shop at Kmart any more, if I can avoid it.
 
They have to do something to deter the flagrant shop-stealing. I show the friendly security/information person a smile and flick the receipt towards them. If I haven’t made a purchase, just the smile is enough. Only problem is to get to the exit then remember to go back to the central check points.

Before "the change" - both KMart at Waratah and KMart at Greenhills - had a "way out" WITHOUT going through the checkout - so I don't know where there WASN'T and alternative way out for "non-buying customers" - because I haven't experienced it.
And ..... I refuse to prove I'm "not a shop lifter" - if they don't trust their customers - it's not my problem - I just walk straight out - no disrespect the the token teenager standing at police guard

Unfortunately , you and I might not be shoplifters, but far too many people are and we are all paying a price for this. Why would you make sucha song and dance about such a simple thing.

If you don't like it shop somewhere else. After all it clearly states that a condition of entry is that you agree to having your bag searched, so why did you enter and then refuse.

Catherine, checking my scooter bag wasn't the hassle, the hassle was they demanded I get off my scooter and walk unaided to the back of my scooter to open it for their inspection. THERE WAS NOTHING IN IT! Why couldn't they lift the cover and check that themselves, I asked them to do that, but NO, they claimed that wasn't their job! Just a few steps??? Sure, but when one struggles to walk unaided even a short distance, if I'd fallen what would they have done?
I don’t remember reading you saying they ‘demanded’ you get off your scooter or that you had to walk to the back of your scooter for the bag to be checked! I just read that they wanted to check the bag hanging on the back of your scooter. And, generally speaking, they are not allowed to touch your property, they just have to have the bag opened for them to look inside. Sometimes they are lucky to find an item with no receipt. I’m genuinely sorry you have a disability which prevents you getting around easily, but the checking of bags is to, hopefully, prevent stock losses which we are all paying for ultimately.

Too many whingers who think they are above the law and don’t need to obey signs saying bags will be checked on leaving. This site seems to attract the ones who want to whinge about inconsequential issues. If you are not a shop-lifter there’s no big deal - open your bag and get out without a worry. If I’m carrying anything just bought at another shop I always voluntarily offer it for inspection and show staff the receipt.

I was annoyed at first but am very used to the set up and I agree with Kmart that it’s the best thing they’ve ever done. It’s called progressive thinking and I’d rather not be waiting in long queues to exit the store if I haven’t purchased anything.

If I have items I've purchased elsewhere I usually show them at the door when entering then no problem when leaving.
Too many whingers who think they are above the law and don’t need to obey signs saying bags will be checked on leaving. This site seems to attract the ones who want to whinge about inconsequential issues. If you are not a shop-lifter there’s no big deal - open your bag and get out without a worry. If I’m carrying anything just bought at another shop I always voluntarily offer it for inspection and show staff the receipt.

Call me Old Fashioned but I prefer the checkout to out the front. They use to be and sure there were line-ups but I'm sure this prevented more thefts. People can have stolen items ready around the store and taken tags off, then buy some items and pick up the ready bags and walk out and show the person standing at the door any Kmart tag. The person at the front does not check every receipt against every item.
 
My understanding is that the main achievement out of this move is that shoplifting has dramatically dropped, hopefully reducing prices in the long run.
 
Call me suspicious or cautious after having worked at a Prison for nearly 7 years. If l was doing security on a door at K-Mart or whatever & a customer with a package made no attempt to stop & open the bag, rather than think nothing of it, l would wonder if something is being stolen.

The other argument of course is that person who walked past me could be employed by the company & l was being tested to see if l was doing my job correctly & may even have removed something without paying for this.

Such people are in a position of trust. AT ALL TIMES ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION.

Most large stores have a sign at the front saying they will check bags as you walk out.
If it's a small bag then it doesn't need to be checked .

By checking shopping bags it may help with thieving which will help prevent price rises.

If we go into a store we need to abide by rules
K Mart cannot have a policy to search anything private as it is against the law. Abide by this and you encourage bullying against vulnerable people and kids. Only the stupid will call this a rule.
 
I can’t believe we are rehashing this subject!
Thats because people are so dumb, it needs to be reinforced that they dont have the power to stop you IF and only if you have done nothing wrong. Most people are as dumb as sheep and will gladly walk over a cliff if the sign says so.
