I’ve Just Noticed

Not a biggie but has anyone else noted the poor sleep habits of forum members?

I sleep very poorly and always have done but keep getting told of the negative health consequences of poor sleep. In a recent hospital based sleep study I thought I had slept well but the technician indicated insufficient data to get a scientific result. So now my sleep habits are a topic of conversation with a Sleep Physician.

I’m really curious about this as my average night is 4 hr 18 minutes with 10 awake periods. Does anyone else experience similar? I would love to hear 😴😴😴 😳😳😳

I tend to find it tough to fall asleep and wake up... I feel terrible if I get less than 8 hours, but often I wont get to sleep until 1 or 2am and then find it really difficult to wake up at a 'normal' hour.

Have you tried melatonin?

Yes, I’ve tried melatonin without success. I’ve undertaken Sleep Hygiene practices over many months, even stopped coffee ☕️, but these have had no benefit. After several stints in hospital it has been identified that I have a number os issues that impact on a decent nights sleep. Despite never sleeping well though I have noticed other SDC members awake at all odd hours.
Are we all tarred with the same brush or are sleep issues synonymous with the SDC? 🤣🤣🤣
Do members have strategies that work for them? If you do it would be great if you would share!

I haven't undergone a sleep study yet (on the never-ending to-do list), but I found it very interesting when my dentist noted that tongue ties can have a negative impact on sleep. Worth checking! I had mine lasered last year, and it has improved my sleep health somewhat, encouraging nasal breathing rather than mouth breathing during the night.

Not sure I'd function on four hours!

Thanks for the info. I’m back to the sleep physician in March, I think, so I’ll mention it then. Little sleep has enabled me to achieve a lot but I struggle to function some days 🥱

Please don’t any of you guys drive while sleep deprived!!🙏 So easy to drift off (if only for a mo & that’s all it takes!) while driving! So many peeps have told me they go just for a second & wake up to see themselves heading for curb or worse!!!
Sleep 😴 is very important & no one should have a problem functioning in any form & be anywhere out, especially driving because you could cause a tragic occurrence that could have a ripple effect on your family & others as well!
Even in your own house you need to be careful when stumbling around half asleep & not concentrating! I know, I’ve done it & almost electrocuted myself!
You can fall over with devastating consequences, scald yourself, electrocute yourself! So many things need our full attention!!!!
So come on peeps! Get to bed earlier, go see sleep specialist or whoever, get effective meds & keep yourself, your family & others SAFE!🙏😊

Just a shout out to all the brave animals who gave their lives for one & all in all wars!
It’s Purple Poppy Day today!
My grandfather was a Gallipoli veteran & was in Eygpt in Light Horse Brigade!
Those beautiful horses were their “mates” & when the soldiers left, they had to take their “mate” out in desert & shoot them, because the army wouldn’t bring them home!!! The soldiers wouldn’t leave them to the locals who wouldn’t have treated them well! I think one was left in Eygpt with a family who promised to look after the horse & one was left with a family in Turkey that the soldier smuggled to them rather than shoot him!
He was known as “Bill the “Bastard”!!
If you enjoy reading, have a read of the book “Bill the Bastard”, it’s great!
Anyhow, spare a thought for these brave animals, dogs, horses, pigeons & others that helped the war effort & still do, along with our police dogs & horses, emergency service dogs in many countries! We owe them a great deal!🙏😊🦮🕊🐴 Lest We Forget

Great advice Royal Watcher. I haven’t driven in years but I’ve known people to drive to work and fall asleep in their vehicle. My rationale for the post was curiosity, do a lot of people suffer sleep problems and what do they do to manage it? My sleep patterns were picked up in one workplace because a variety of govt and non govt offices were getting emails from me a lot between 3 & 4 am. Alas, the problem continues.

I used to sleep well when I was working but the last year or two post retirement I find it harder to go to sleep and then to stay asleep for hours at a time. Arthritic pain in several joints and my back also contribute. If I can't sleep then I get up and read along with a warm Milo made completely on milk. This helps me to settle again and then I go back to sleep. Also doing more in the day around the house and going for long walks helps.

Yes, I have poor sleep habits, I usually don`t go to be bed before 11.30 pm and mostly find that I cannot go to sleep often getting up again and waiting until I become so tired that at about 2.00 to 3.00 am go back to bed and will finally go to sleep, waking up at least 2 times. Usually awake again at about 7. am. I need about 8 hrs sleep to function! I have tried melatonin no good, practice sleep hygeine, I have used valerian no good, used my aunts valium O.K but not a long term option, I don`t want to get hooked on prescribed sleep medication. I have friends who experience the same problems, one gets up and does jigsaw puzzles, one drinks green tea, another drinks a glass of milk. I have found that sitting in front of the television can send me to sleep but only for short time. Maybe as we get older we don`t need so much sleep but I`m not convinced about that either. I don`t have any answers.

On another note, my grandfather was a Gallipoli Veteran and I have been told that he was known as "Bill the Bastard" maybe that was a common term used for the soldiers, I`m not sure and did not know there was a book called "Bill the Bastard" and will be looking into this. Maybe this is just a coincidence? My Grandfather was William Patrick Berg, he enlisted at 16 yrs of age, discharged 2 yrs latter and suffered the rest of his life with PTSS. He passed away when I was 8 yrs old and the family did not talk about the war and as far as I know he would not discuss the war, he did not take part in any ANZAC events.

I have just discovered that "Bill the Bastard" was a war horse, so there you go, not my grandfather, but let me say the soldiers were treated no better than the animals during that war and all wars.

I'm normally still looking at my phone/tablet/laptop until it's time to go to bed, then end up still looking at my phone in bed😕

However, my Fitbit tells me I get about 8 hours sleep a night, but 6 hours is light sleep.
Sunday night I couldn't get to sleep at all. Even changed bedrooms to see if that would help. Managed to get some sleep, but when I checked my Fitbit the next morning it seems I had signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) all night. My heart had been beating between about 40 -180 BPM😕☹️
Last had that happen last May. Heart was checked and nothing bad was found.

Yes, I wonder if there is some medical problem, but from the replies to-day it seems that sleep for this group is causing a lot of problems. Maybe we need to look at it differently, not sure, changing our activity routines and get busy during the night, however I`m usualy too tired to even think properly.

Freddy, you might have wh at is known as paroxysmal AF, which is a form that comes and goes. However, it would be worth going back for a thorough going over as there are inherent risks associated with AF that shouldn’t be ignored.
Take care 😊😊
