In a shocking incident that has left many reeling, an 81-year-old woman is in dire straits after a brutal attack in the emergency department of a Sydney hospital.

Police initially responded to an assault at Bankstown Hospital where two women, aged 63 and 58, were reportedly attacked by a patient.

In a horrifying escalation, the same assailant was alleged to have inflicted bodily harm on the mother of these victims, the 81-year-old woman.

The New South Wales Police described the situation: 'It's further alleged the man then choked the woman and hit her head against the wall, causing her to lose consciousness.'

Hospital staff intervened promptly, providing immediate assistance and medical treatment to the victims.

The accused was arrested on the spot and, once medically cleared, was taken to Bankstown Police Station.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed by the police, was subsequently charged overnight. He was charged with causing grievous bodily home with intent, to different counts of choking and assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was scheduled to appear at Parramatta Local Court last January 5.

It was said that the other injured individuals had been discharged from the emergency department with minimal injuries.

The 81-year-old woman, on the other hand, suffered significant facial injuries and has since developed bleeding in the brain. She remains in critical condition at Bankstown Hospital.

A spokesperson for Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital stated: 'Our social workers are providing support to the patient's family.’

The spokesperson also confirmed that no staff members were injured in the incident, but counselling and support have been offered to those who witnessed the horrifying event.

The hospital is fully cooperating with the police investigation and has assured that public access to the emergency department has been maintained, with no disruption to patient care or services.

‘The hospital is assisting the police inquiries and cannot make any further comment,’ the spokesperson added.

Golly it's so sad. It's as if someone has flicked a switch and our beautiful country is totally going down the tube. I don't recall 🤔 when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s the sort of horror that we hear every day. My sister was living in East Africa and that was out of control but it was quietened down.
I do believe there was generally more respect as many folk were still reeling from WW2 and we still did as was expected of us. Like civilised people do.
I don't pretend to know the answer and looking towards what is meant to be the best country in the world, not my words only repeating, as The United States of America is so scary. Go to school get shot, go grocery shopping get stabbed, get sick and hospital care for uninsured folk is basically non existent. I scratch my head trying to see great then toss that Trump fellow into it i reckon id sell my possessions buy a boat and hit the Polynesian Islands, can't be worse can it?
Australia we have to take back our country, somehow.

PS I apologise about the length of my reply. I don't see many people 😕
The parenting of many children in society (or lack of it) leaves a lot to be desired. You see it every day when you are out and about. Parents pushing toddlers in prams; they have their heads buries in their phones; the child tries to get their attention...gets told to shush etc or even worse. Maybe the time will come when there will be a test to see if people are allowed to have children. So many have them and then the job of parenting becomes too hard and the kids do as they like. Out at all hours; not going to school and then they end up stealing/assault because they need money and then they are on the criminal treadmill.

Generational factors at work.

There are no words to describe how I feel. If ever you needed evidence that society has well and truly disintegrated this is another example. We hear something every day along similar lines. So glad I grew up in the era I did and my days on this earth are numbered.
Have to say I agree with you ! What is the world coming to? Because it’s happening everywhere.

People don't realise exactly what nurses go through . I have one daughter working in the operating room, one daughter at uni who wants to do Paediatric nursing but needs to do alot of work placement in different areas first including pych ward.
And another is a RN and works as a Geriatric nurse who now only does home visits .
Your daughters must be very caring people, you must be very proud of them.
I feel sorry for nurses, who are only trying to do their job, and have to put up with abuse and violence from ungrateful ingrates.

Yes, I do, I worked in Aged Care, you think this would be safe, but not all the time.
We are all going to be aged people from our own past, and not all were perfect, or we develop mental health issues that cause lots of ongoing problems. It's a sad fact of life we are not all perfect all of the time.
Your daughters are to be commended.

In the son's statement he declared -
"My mother is supported by over 100 grandchildren who have strong family ties and faith."
100 grandkids!

I worked in a small nursing home about 30 odd years ago and the doors were always kept locked and people had to buzz the nurses station and say who they were to gain access so I always felt safe.We had unbreakable glass doors also so we could see people. The only time we felt unsafe was when the frankston serial killer was lurking around our area that’s the only time we were on edge.🙀

You hear all the time these horrific stories of people not being able to access mental health services. My ex, who suffered from bipolar had to be committed to Graylands on two separate occasions when he was psychotic. Strangely enough I had no difficulty on having him committed on these occasions.
However, several years later, after we had separated he had been committed again, but released again while still psychotic, within 24 hours he had committed suicide.
So much for our mental health system. Why our powers that be felt that families should take care of mentally ill people is beyond me.
I tried that and nearly got myself killed.
What is the answer, these people are not to blame, they are sick and should not be walking the streets
Nobody knows about the mental state of this person. The fact that he had a previous altercation with the daughter does not mean that he wasn't having an episode. That could have been enough to send him over the edge, or perhaps not. Not our place to judge without having the full detaild.
My best wishes go out to this poor unfortunate lady.🌹
I would say the mental health system is a joke, but it’s not funny. It’s a crying shame.
