In a shocking incident that has left many reeling, an 81-year-old woman is in dire straits after a brutal attack in the emergency department of a Sydney hospital.

Police initially responded to an assault at Bankstown Hospital where two women, aged 63 and 58, were reportedly attacked by a patient.

In a horrifying escalation, the same assailant was alleged to have inflicted bodily harm on the mother of these victims, the 81-year-old woman.

The New South Wales Police described the situation: 'It's further alleged the man then choked the woman and hit her head against the wall, causing her to lose consciousness.'

Hospital staff intervened promptly, providing immediate assistance and medical treatment to the victims.

The accused was arrested on the spot and, once medically cleared, was taken to Bankstown Police Station.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed by the police, was subsequently charged overnight. He was charged with causing grievous bodily home with intent, to different counts of choking and assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was scheduled to appear at Parramatta Local Court last January 5.

It was said that the other injured individuals had been discharged from the emergency department with minimal injuries.

The 81-year-old woman, on the other hand, suffered significant facial injuries and has since developed bleeding in the brain. She remains in critical condition at Bankstown Hospital.

A spokesperson for Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital stated: 'Our social workers are providing support to the patient's family.’

The spokesperson also confirmed that no staff members were injured in the incident, but counselling and support have been offered to those who witnessed the horrifying event.

The hospital is fully cooperating with the police investigation and has assured that public access to the emergency department has been maintained, with no disruption to patient care or services.

‘The hospital is assisting the police inquiries and cannot make any further comment,’ the spokesperson added.

LIke all decent, law abiding individuals, reading about the attack on this vulnerable elderly woman fills me with anger and despair. More so, because I was a nursing sister for forty five years, and my work included caring for those assaulted by a violent offender. I know what it's like to stand by the bed of a dying patient, whilst their grieving family say goodbye. The world today is very different from the world I was familiar with growing up. The news is filled with stories of youth crime, and daylight attacks on home owners. Too few taxpayers dollars are spent on building juvenile detention centres, and prisons for recidivists. In the age of social media, Facebook, Twitter, etc, child exploitation is endemic, and many seem indifferent to others right to live a life free from the fear of being assaulted, or their home broken into. In Queensland, youth crime is out of control, and little is being done to make the parents of twelve and thirteen year old repeat offenders, who are armed with weapons, held accountable Housebreaking, car thefts, and physical assaults are the daily fare for these young criminals, who have the gall to video record their heinous behaviour, and sneer at the authorities. Is this the world we want our children and grandchildren to inherit? I regularly contact my local member of Parliament, to voice my opinion on anything I think should be brought to politicians notice. An example is, I took documented evidence regarding certain dishonest practices by the home care provider I initially had care services, ( gardening, and house cleaning ) from. His response was that the Government were aware, and measures were being taken to change laws relating to the H.C.P. To my knowledge, nothing has changed. Voters suffer from terminal apathy. If we all made our displeasure known to our local representative, things would change. Lastly, at the end,of this woefully long diatribe, I'm thankful that many young people are politically active. We all live in the world that we've been instrumental in building. We have the ability to change what doesn't benefit everyone, regardless of rank or wealth.
