Cardinal George Pell passes away following hip surgery complications

Australia’s most senior Catholic figure, Cardinal George Pell, has died in Rome, Italy due to complications following a recent hip replacement surgery.

According to The Australian, Cardinal Pell had been chatting with the anaesthetist in hospital when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

EWTN News Vatican correspondent Colm Flynn was one of the first people to publicly confirm the Cardinal’s death.

‘I’ve just spoken to his household, and can confirm the sad news of the passing of Cardinal George Pell at the age of 81. May he rest in peace,’ Flynn tweeted.

Colleagues in the Catholic Church were saddened by his passing and expressed their condolences to his family.

‘Cardinal Pell was a very significant and influential Church leader, both in Australia and internationally, deeply committed to Christian discipleship,’ said Melbourne Archbishop Peter Comensoli.

‘At this immediate moment, let our prayers go out to the God of Jesus Christ, whom Cardinal Pell wholeheartedly believed in and followed, that he may be welcomed into eternal life.’

‘May eternal light shine upon him, and may he now rest in peace and rise to glory in the Lord.’

Cardinal Pell, the highest ranking official of the Catholic Church from Australia, is characterised as a staunch advocate of traditional Catholic values. He is known to be unapologetically against same-sex marriage, homosexuality, the climate crisis, and abortion and contraception.

Cardinal Pell was born on June 8, 1941 to father George Arthur Pell, mother Margaret Lillian, and four siblings (all but one, David, have since passed).

He was ordained at the Vatican in 1966 after choosing his faith over what was a blossoming career in Aussie Rules football (AFL).

He served as the seventh head of Melbourne’s local Catholic community as archbishop from 1996-2001, and then as Archbishop of Sydney from 2001-2014.

In 2014, Cardinal Pell was appointed by Pope Francis as the leader of the then-new Secretariat for the Economy which was tasked to manage and oversee all of the Vatican’s financial activities.

Four years later in December of 2018 he was convicted of child sex abuse claims alleged to have abused two 13-year-old boys during his term as Archbishop of Melbourne.

After spending over a year in prison over the charges, he was freed in April 2020 after the High Court of Australia overturned his conviction.

The High Court ruled that all the evidence presented in the allegations raised against Cardinal Pell was not considered properly, according to reports.

For his part, Cardinal Pell has maintained his innocence on the matter.

Cardinal Pell is said to be the highest ranking official of the Catholic Church convicted and jailed for child sex abuse claims in the world.

Cardinal Pell returned to Rome the same year, where he remained until his death.

It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance. That is just your ill informed opinion devoid of any proof!!

Verdexon ..........Pell publicly ADMITTED that he let Catholic children & their families down. Are you a Catholic who also choose to turn a blind eye to child sexual abuse ????????

How disgusting, he gets let off by judges that couldn't care less and he is celebrated. If the is a hell he will be going there. I feel for his victims. Celebrate his death only to celebrate the reason that he is dead and can't harm anyone else.

''Pell publicly ADMITTED that he let Catholic children & their families down'' So you say!! back that up with some proof. As to your other question we were raised in a Christian non sectarian household by Parents who led by example with values we still live by to this day.As both a Father and a G/father i can assure you i am abhorred by the very thought of ANY child being molested, maybe you should direct some of your venom towards the Children services departments around the country particularly in the aboriginal communities where this issue remains unresolved.

What a pathetic excuse for a Human Being You are!!

Horse sh*t
And who will speak for the children in the highest court. We've the contempt with which raped women were treated in the 70s and 80s , children were accused of lying, fantasizing and altogether getting it wrong because they didn't have the words to describe the atrocity that had happened to them.
Go Home and stay there. Perhaps you could imagine, if you have the courage, walking in the shoes of a raped child today.
I have served on child rape juries and I can assure you even at the age 21yrs old victims were ridiculed by the defence and told they had got it wrong. At the same time the perpetrators maintained they had done nothing wrong. One perpetrator got 27 years and I came across him 3 years later on a plane coming back from Bali, no doubt having been shopping for fresh meat.
Don't comment on something you know nothing about, unless, course you are sympathetic to those activities.

What a nasty human you are. He was acquitted by the highest court in the land by 7 judges unanimously. He is NOT a sex offender.
And....how do you know ?. Do you know the Child protection squad were constantly frustrated by their attempts because there is a site in USA which has a list of sympathetic Layers and judges for all over the world.......Wake up and smell the roses .......Unfortunately the law doesn't always protect the innocent.
I sincerely hope you don't find yourself in a precarious & unjust situation one day.....don't rely on our justice system to protect you if your lawyers and the cops cant find admissible evidence.

''Well I dont and wont stay silent about this sub human'' As the saying goes.........''It takes one to know one ''

Quotes by George Pell which demonstrate his indifferent, dismissive attitude to child sexual abuse by clergy:

“It’s a sad story and it wasn’t of much interest to me. ..The suffering, of course, was real and I very much regret that, but I had no reason to turn my mind to the extent of the evils that Ridsdale had perpetrated.” (NB: Pell resided with Risdale in the 1970s so it is hard to believe he had no idea what was going on).

“Abortion is a worse moral scandal than priests sexually abusing young people.”

Asked by the Sydney Morning Herald what he would say to the families of people who had taken their own lives following sexual abuse, Pell said: "There's not too many of those".

Let those without sin cast the first stone….. No one on earth has the right to judge. Jesus was innocent but He was executed. If you do not believe in God, or your fellow human beings all you are left with is condemnation of anyone who does not fit your criteria. Let the man REST IN PEACE!

I agree 100%.

Abusing children is despicable and something children have to bear for their whole lives.

I also wonder if he’d had his hip operation here in Australia if he would have survived.
Oh dear there we go again . Medicine anywhere else is not as good as here is Ozzie. You may have forgotten Bologna is where most doctors studied when Ausie was still a not much more than a penal colony. Jeeez !!!!!! give me a break

I would be very interested if you could provide proof of, or references for, your statement that "Bologna is where most doctors studied when Ausie was still a not much more than a penal colony", as I really doubt this is correct. Seems more like pure assertion.

And yes I'm an atheist, my quote is about religion "Christian are like those looking for a cat in a darken room that isn't there and yelling out "I found it"

How about you produce that said list? I'd be interested to see that. Thanks.

I'm so sorry. Unfortunately, no one is eternal, and it's God's will, isn't it? Death is a natural part of life, and it is something that everyone will experience at some point. Although the loss of a loved one can be difficult and painful, many people find comfort in their faith and belief that their loved one is now with God. Many religious traditions also offer rituals and practices to help people mourn and honor those who have passed away. Ultimately, trusting in God's plan and finding strength in our faith can help us navigate the difficult times that come with loss and death. I attend apostolic church and always pray for the souls of the dead.
