Cardinal George Pell passes away following hip surgery complications

Australia’s most senior Catholic figure, Cardinal George Pell, has died in Rome, Italy due to complications following a recent hip replacement surgery.

According to The Australian, Cardinal Pell had been chatting with the anaesthetist in hospital when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

EWTN News Vatican correspondent Colm Flynn was one of the first people to publicly confirm the Cardinal’s death.

‘I’ve just spoken to his household, and can confirm the sad news of the passing of Cardinal George Pell at the age of 81. May he rest in peace,’ Flynn tweeted.

Colleagues in the Catholic Church were saddened by his passing and expressed their condolences to his family.

‘Cardinal Pell was a very significant and influential Church leader, both in Australia and internationally, deeply committed to Christian discipleship,’ said Melbourne Archbishop Peter Comensoli.

‘At this immediate moment, let our prayers go out to the God of Jesus Christ, whom Cardinal Pell wholeheartedly believed in and followed, that he may be welcomed into eternal life.’

‘May eternal light shine upon him, and may he now rest in peace and rise to glory in the Lord.’

Cardinal Pell, the highest ranking official of the Catholic Church from Australia, is characterised as a staunch advocate of traditional Catholic values. He is known to be unapologetically against same-sex marriage, homosexuality, the climate crisis, and abortion and contraception.

Cardinal Pell was born on June 8, 1941 to father George Arthur Pell, mother Margaret Lillian, and four siblings (all but one, David, have since passed).

He was ordained at the Vatican in 1966 after choosing his faith over what was a blossoming career in Aussie Rules football (AFL).

He served as the seventh head of Melbourne’s local Catholic community as archbishop from 1996-2001, and then as Archbishop of Sydney from 2001-2014.

In 2014, Cardinal Pell was appointed by Pope Francis as the leader of the then-new Secretariat for the Economy which was tasked to manage and oversee all of the Vatican’s financial activities.

Four years later in December of 2018 he was convicted of child sex abuse claims alleged to have abused two 13-year-old boys during his term as Archbishop of Melbourne.

After spending over a year in prison over the charges, he was freed in April 2020 after the High Court of Australia overturned his conviction.

The High Court ruled that all the evidence presented in the allegations raised against Cardinal Pell was not considered properly, according to reports.

For his part, Cardinal Pell has maintained his innocence on the matter.

Cardinal Pell is said to be the highest ranking official of the Catholic Church convicted and jailed for child sex abuse claims in the world.

Cardinal Pell returned to Rome the same year, where he remained until his death.

May his maker treat him much more gently than he treated victims of sexual crimes

Let's be clear here. Cardinal Pell's conviction was overturned by the Australian High Court because the burden of proof used against him was lacking/ not met. That was NOT a case of anyone 'hiding behind (church) skirts', unless some respondents are questioning OUR legal system and its highest represenatives.
ALL defendants, even those 'caught in the act' - which this man was not - have the democratic right to vigorously defend themselves, to the highest court in the land.

For knowingly moving evil bastards who hid behind his frock!
If you had that evidence why didn't you come forward with it to ensure a conviction?? And if you can't provide that proof and its just your Schtick to dump on people who can't answer back there is a saying that goes. ''It is better to shut your mouth and leave some doubt rather than open your mouth and leave no doubt'' People who hold prejudice or discriminate against Christians or any other group of people on the basis of their religion are rightfully called out as Bigots.

Actually, were you there? The highest court in the land examined all the evidence and ACQUITTED him and ordered his release from prison. ALL seven High Court judges found that Victoria's Court of Appeal should not have upheld Pell's conviction. It found the evidence could NOT support a guilty verdict. So, you know better than them? Were you privvy to ALL of the evidence presented in court or only scuttlebutt, innuendo, social media rantings etc? Don't speak ill of the dead unless you are 100% sure and I am guessing that you are not.

He's a convicted sex offender
That is illegal of you to say that. He is not a convicted sex offender after he was acquitted by the High Court of Australia unanimously by 7 judges. If someone said that of me, I would sue them. Get your facts correct before you speak MotherGoose or you may sound like a goose.

Fake News!! He appealed the conviction and was exonerated by the High Court of this Country. Is that not good enough for you??
Obviously, it isn't good enough for them. They think they are smarter than 7 High Court judges who have looked at all of the evidence.

Those rushing to condemn Pell have little understanding of what happens following a High Mass at St Mary’s. Andrew Bolt proved conclusively that in the alleged timeframe & given the NUMBER of other adults present ALL the time, there was no way Pell could have sexually penetrated TWO altar boys in the SACRISTY without BEING SEEN! As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse I have no sympathy for those who choose to abuse innocents but I do not condone PELL being the scapegoat for the failures of others in the church! He said he did not care about himself but he DID care about the Catholic Church. Pell was exonerated so all wishing him to he’ll need to hope YOU are never falsely accused!

Is that supposed to be funny? How ignorant are you to make fun of a person who just died.
That type of comment would usually be heard in the School ground by someone yet to grow Pubic Hair!!

This is great news about Pell. I hope he died in pain and rots in hell after his abuse of vulnerable people by knowing about the abuse and doing nothing about it. and threatening or intimidating victims and their families as was reported by the victims.

Pell ended up getting exactly what he deserves and will rot in hell.

Protect this less than human being for covering up his crimes, I am not sure you would have agreed with his actions and threats against victims if you were one of them. I never said he was sex offender, I said he hid the fact when he knew and threatened victims and their families, that fact was from his victims. Well I dont and wont stay silent about this sub human.
