Cardinal George Pell passes away following hip surgery complications

Australia’s most senior Catholic figure, Cardinal George Pell, has died in Rome, Italy due to complications following a recent hip replacement surgery.

According to The Australian, Cardinal Pell had been chatting with the anaesthetist in hospital when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

EWTN News Vatican correspondent Colm Flynn was one of the first people to publicly confirm the Cardinal’s death.

‘I’ve just spoken to his household, and can confirm the sad news of the passing of Cardinal George Pell at the age of 81. May he rest in peace,’ Flynn tweeted.

Colleagues in the Catholic Church were saddened by his passing and expressed their condolences to his family.

‘Cardinal Pell was a very significant and influential Church leader, both in Australia and internationally, deeply committed to Christian discipleship,’ said Melbourne Archbishop Peter Comensoli.

‘At this immediate moment, let our prayers go out to the God of Jesus Christ, whom Cardinal Pell wholeheartedly believed in and followed, that he may be welcomed into eternal life.’

‘May eternal light shine upon him, and may he now rest in peace and rise to glory in the Lord.’

Cardinal Pell, the highest ranking official of the Catholic Church from Australia, is characterised as a staunch advocate of traditional Catholic values. He is known to be unapologetically against same-sex marriage, homosexuality, the climate crisis, and abortion and contraception.

Cardinal Pell was born on June 8, 1941 to father George Arthur Pell, mother Margaret Lillian, and four siblings (all but one, David, have since passed).

He was ordained at the Vatican in 1966 after choosing his faith over what was a blossoming career in Aussie Rules football (AFL).

He served as the seventh head of Melbourne’s local Catholic community as archbishop from 1996-2001, and then as Archbishop of Sydney from 2001-2014.

In 2014, Cardinal Pell was appointed by Pope Francis as the leader of the then-new Secretariat for the Economy which was tasked to manage and oversee all of the Vatican’s financial activities.

Four years later in December of 2018 he was convicted of child sex abuse claims alleged to have abused two 13-year-old boys during his term as Archbishop of Melbourne.

After spending over a year in prison over the charges, he was freed in April 2020 after the High Court of Australia overturned his conviction.

The High Court ruled that all the evidence presented in the allegations raised against Cardinal Pell was not considered properly, according to reports.

For his part, Cardinal Pell has maintained his innocence on the matter.

Cardinal Pell is said to be the highest ranking official of the Catholic Church convicted and jailed for child sex abuse claims in the world.

Cardinal Pell returned to Rome the same year, where he remained until his death.

Protect this less than human being for covering up his crimes, I am not sure you would have agreed with his actions and threats against victims if you were one of them. I never said he was sex offender, I said he hid the fact when he knew and threatened victims and their families, that fact was from his victims. Well I dont and wont stay silent about this sub human.

He may have been good at his job at the Vatican, but he left behind a trail of carnage, broken people and tortured souls here in Melbourne in his pursuit of self preservation . Not sorry he is gone.

This is great news about Pell. I hope he died in pain and rots in hell after his abuse of vulnerable people by knowing about the abuse and doing nothing about it. and threatening or intimidating victims and their families as was reported by the victims.
''as was reported by the victims'' you say!! The 7 High Court Judges obviously didn't believe them either!!

''in his pursuit of self preservation'' you say !! Wrong, wrong, wrong. All he was doing was seeking Justice, and the High Court of this country rightfully gave that to him....why do you find that decision so hard to accept? Is it your Bigotry,Ignorance of the law or your hatred of a Christian that clouds your judgment.

Actually, were you there? The highest court in the land examined all the evidence and ACQUITTED him and ordered his release from prison. ALL seven High Court judges found that Victoria's Court of Appeal should not have upheld Pell's conviction. It found the evidence could NOT support a guilty verdict. So, you know better than them? Were you privvy to ALL of the evidence presented in court or only scuttlebutt, innuendo, social media rantings etc? Don't speak ill of the dead unless you are 100% sure and I am guessing that you are not.
No I wasn't but so many were and you were not, one maybe but so many are they lying? No they were young didn't know there was help.. But help from whom GOD?? he was no where to be seen. It's like looking for a cat in a dark room that isn't there and yelping out " I found it"

Dear Susanne Rose... Have you ever heard of a City called New York?
New York is the wealthiest city in the world—home to 345,600 millionaires with a total private wealth that exceeds $3 trillion. (2022)
It is also possible that Casablanca in Morocco is high up there too. I DONT dispute that the Vatican is NOT rich ..BUT i DO DISPUTE that it is the richest city in the world. I am not sure that it is classed as a city .. the numbers dont add up as far as I can determine.
Please check your stats before spruiking.
Please check the original post before "spruiking" yourself - Suzanne (not Susanne) specified the Vatican as an ORGANIZATION, not as a CITY, so your examples are not relevant. A single organisation (the Catholic Church) is not at all the same thing as a city full of wealthy individuals.

It's not a question of whether the victims were believed, it's a question of what can be proved to satisfy the law, which tends to favour the perpetrator(s) and not the victim(s).
