Our house was built in part by my Hubby in that the walls were done by a bricklayer but the rest by Hubby, his Dad and his BIL with building inspectors there regularly. Block bricks inside and out, and at the time that the new rules for roofing for cyclone areas was about to come in Hubby not only complied to that but did extra. He tells me our roof will never come off. This was all before he even met me. All our flexi-hoses have a tap to turn off when we are out and we have other safety measures in place cos we know insurance will use any excuse to not pay out when something goes wrong with your home. We live in an age where pride in one's work is nowhere near what it used to be years ago. I'm glad we're older cos I would hate to see what the world will look like when our grandkids are in their 40s and 50s. I love in a small community and the new house build around the corner from us a few years ago was a nightmare from what we heard and the builder had to return over and over again to fix things that were not done right when the owners during building complained to the relevant departments.
You are one of the fortunate ones.... full brick... unheard of today.
The houses built today are meant to last 20-30 years if you are lucky.
They are made of cardboard and not soundproofed.

I don't own a house but this is paltry . Same ol' Same ol for Pensioners and I don't see anyone Screaming support for us ? Also who is giving the electricity rebate of $125 ? Is it Albanese , 'cause he already has reneged on the Vote Promise !!!
Yes you are correct there, lve been in public housing for 33 Years lve lived in the one house. My rent goes up twice a year when we recieve any bit of a rise. It's ridiculous l think Albanese needs to look after us Australians first...

How do you go about getting public housing? I am getting to the stage where I will be on the street with the cost of living and rentals.

You register your interest with the Victorian housing register for me but whatever state your in. You can check it out online.good luck I applied about 2 years ago and have only just been accepted.now I have to wait for a house or unit to become available. The list of people waiting is so long unfortunately.😊

Sorry to say but I think your chances are pretty bleak.
There are literally thousands of people on the waiting list in every state. Even hundreds and hundreds on the emergency list.
The government housing situation is a joke .
There are hundreds of state houses empty and in need of renovation, but nothing ever seems to be done about them.
My husband and I were asked, a few years back now, if we were interested in doing some of these renovations. They were too far from where we lived, so we said no. As far as I know those houses have still not been repaired.
Can't believe they couldn't have been done a long time before now.
Don't know where you live, I'm talking about WA
You can get accepted, but your chances of getting a house are pretty slim.
An old friend of mine, who moved in with me when she had nowhere to live, was on the waiting list for 12 years, until she passed away, without ever being offered a place.

I consider the federal Government to be arrogant and insulting .__to expect pensioners to keep up
with expenses , given the ever increasing cost`s of everything.
And we all know that once the costof everything goes up BUT it never goes down.
and while they are guaranteed of getting healthy salary increases, etc.
They blatantly expect us on pensions to shut up and say nothing.
all the while giving in to others on so called " minimum incomes.--which are WAY ABOVE what we are expected to "manage" with.
Regardless of having to pay half the pension in rent, then also pay car insurance, water, electricity, groceries, medicines -which are all beyond a joke, and some specialist cost`s car maintenance, fuel, etc, etc.

But the media don`t consider this to be selling stories , so they`re not interested either.

Yeah I’m not holding my breath. Lucky I’ve got great landlords and my rents still under the recommended price for my area which is $400.00 I pay $375.00 i have had one increase in 5 years. 😊

You are lucky, even though it is still a struggle when the rent assistance just doesn't keep up with the rent increases for most people.
There are some good landlords out there. I liked to think I was one of them but I recently sold my rental because I had just had enough of bad tenants.
Good tenants are hard to come by and I would say you are a good one and your landlord realises that. Much better to have a good tenant on a lower rent, than chasing ridiculous rents and having your property trashed and continually chasing unpaid rent

The sooner you Apply rhe better. The system changes All the time yet if you can get on the Priority list, due to Medical condition eg panic attacks and many more ... the process IS then quicker. I waited 4 years on the Priority and 8 years on the ordinary list before that AND don't let this totally put you off as I said the System changes often. The more persistent you are, the more Clarity You have and the more Determination you find works! 😉 Go for it!

I think Albo has given quite a few increases to the aged pension since he has been in! I only remember Scott Morrison doing it once?

Unfortunately as you are no longer in the workforce, political parties no have interest in you till election time, then they will promise you everything for your vote.

Pension increases are every six months, March and September, makes no difference which party is in power.
The raise is tied to the CPI so it also has no relationship to who is in power.

Actually it does, as the party in power, has the power to alter various payments if they wish to do so?that's the old saw that they say they have no control over. BULLSHIT.

I didn't mean they couldn't raise the amount anytime they want to, I was just pointing out that we have received a raise every six months, not that Albo had given a few and Morrison only once.
We have received six monthly rises for as long as I can remember, though quite a few years ago now we did receive an extra rise, but still none of them are enough, and for a quite a while there they were only a few miserly dollars, tied to CPI.
It would would work out better I think if it was tied to inflation, but I'm not a mathematician.

i can no longer afford house insurance and car insurance or afford to drive anywhere other than doctors or shopping
because of the virus and a disabled sick wife i struggleD every day and dont forget i had to remorgage my house and get no govt relief
Instead i get higher council rates which is over $2000 and i am virtually forced to get the internet and a mobile phone which costs over $100 a month with no consideration in the pension as everything nowadays requires us to get to pay bills etc....
THESE DEBTS DIO NOT CHANGE FROM A FAMILY TO A SINGLE PERSON WHEN MY WIFE PASSED AND IN FACT IT GOT EVEN HARDER TO LIVE

AND THE CPI IS A LOAD OF SHIT
HAS THE COST OF LIVING ONLY GONE UP %5.2 in the last 18 months
I DOUBT IT
IT WOULD BE CLOSER TO %20
HOW MUCH HAS YOUR ELECTRICITY, COUNCIL RATES ,FOOD, PETROL GAS INSURANCES WATER RATES ,PHONE ,INTERNET ,AND ANYTHING ELSE GONE UP
DO THE MATHS

Oh well.... by that time I will be kicking up daisies so I won't bother.
Thanks anyway...

YES ,ALBANESE HAS GIVEN RISES ONLY BY THE CPI AND IT APPEARS THE GOVT DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN AUSTRALIA AS THE CPI IS A LOT LOWER THAN IT ACTUALLY IS
%1.8 in the last 12 months BULLSHIT
ALSO IT APPEARS THAT IT DISCRIMINATES BETWEEN THE ELDDERLY. THE CARERS ,THE DISABLED COMPARED TO THE UNEMPLOYED AND SINGLE PARENTS
WHY ARE SINGLE PARENTS AND THE UNEMPLOYED GETTING BIGGER BENEFITS THAN THE LATTER AND BEFORE YOU COMMENT CHECK THE PAY INCREASE FOR EVERYONE ON BENEFITS INCUDING THE VARIOUS PAYOUTS WHERE THE UNEMPLOYED RECEIVED A %100 increase IN PAYMENTS ANS SINGLE PARENTS THOUSANDS MORE IN THE STIMULOUS PACKAGES
WHEN THE GOVT LET THE VIROUS INTO THE COUNTRY THE UNEMPLOYED, PENSIONERS. CARERS AND THE DISABLED GOT THOUSANDS LESS THAN THAN ANY OTHER PEOPLE ON WELFARE
ALSO NOTE THE PEOPLE WHO HAD THEIR LIVES CUT SHORT WERE THE ELDERLY BY OVER%90 FROM THE VIRUS AND THE GOVT DID NOT GIVE A SHIT AND IT SHOWED IN THE STIMULOUS PACKAGES
CHECK YOUR FACTS BEFORE COMMENTING NEGATIVELY AS A FACT IS A FACT
