Donald Trump’s latest health claim has triggered a sharp rebuke from Australian experts, who insist that paracetamol is safe for use during pregnancy.

The former U.S. president suggested the common pain reliever could increase the risk of autism, a claim medical professionals say is misleading and unsupported by science.

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has moved quickly to reassure the public, confirming there are ‘no current active safety investigations’ into any link between paracetamol and autism.

Trump’s comments spark alarm

On Tuesday, Trump urged pregnant women to ‘strongly’ limit their paracetamol use unless they had an ‘extremely high fever’ they could not ‘tough out.’

Professor Andrew Whitehouse, a leading autism researcher at the Kids Research Institute Australia, called the claim a ‘misuse of science’ and ‘complete misunderstanding.’

'At best, Trump's claim is a misreading of the available research.'

Professor Andrew Whitehouse

What the science actually shows

Professor Whitehouse explained that while some studies have found associations between paracetamol use during pregnancy and autism, others found no effect—or even the opposite.

‘Really importantly, though, what none of these studies have shown is a causal link that paracetamol taken during pregnancy causes autism, and that's why I say it could be a potential misuse of science,’ he said.

He added that autism is ‘a really complex, genetically based condition,’ noting: ‘We know that genetics is likely the cause in the vast majority of cases of autism, and there are dozens, if not hundreds, of genes that are likely to contribute to that.’

Paracetamol in Australia

Known as acetaminophen in the U.S. (e.g., Tylenol)

Common Australian brands: Panadol, Herron, Chemist’s Own

Listed as ‘Category A’ in pregnancy—considered safe when used as directed

The TGA and expert warnings

The TGA reiterated that ‘the use of medications in pregnancy is subject to clinical, scientific and toxicological evaluation at the time of registration of a medicine in Australia,’ adding: ‘The TGA has no current active safety investigations for paracetamol and autism, or paracetamol and neurodevelopmental disorders more broadly.’

Dr Hannah Kirk, a senior lecturer at Monash University’s Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, reinforced this position.

‘Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition with no known single cause. However, research shows that genetics play a large role, with hundreds of genes being linked to autism,’ she said.

She explained that fever itself can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes: ‘In many cases, treating a fever with acetaminophen may reduce those risks. Pregnant people should continue to follow the advice of their healthcare providers when managing pain and fever.’

What the research says

Large-scale studies have undercut Trump’s claim. Dr Kirk pointed to an analysis of 2.48 million births, which found that when comparing siblings—thereby controlling for genetic and environmental factors—any apparent link between acetaminophen use and autism disappeared.

‘Recent suggestions that Tylenol use during pregnancy could increase the risk of autism have understandably raised concern among expectant parents,’ Dr Kirk said. ‘However, no study has shown that acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, causes autism. Some studies have reported an association … while others have not. Importantly, association does not mean causation.’

Beyond paracetamol: Trump’s other claims

Trump has also promoted the cancer treatment drug leucovorin as a possible therapy for autism. Professor Whitehouse said the idea is premature and unproven. ‘[There have] been a handful of studies on a handful of children, so ... the findings are not entirely believable,’ he said. He added that pushing to fast-track leucovorin for autism ‘far exceeds where the science is at, at this stage.’

Safe use of paracetamol in pregnancy

  • Follow dosage guidelines carefully

  • Consult a doctor before prolonged use

  • Use to manage fever or significant pain when needed

  • Remember: Category A medicine in Australia, considered safe

What This Means For You

Medical experts stress that paracetamol remains a safe and important tool for managing pain and fever during pregnancy. Autism, they say, is a complex condition with strong genetic roots—not the result of a single medication. The TGA continues to classify paracetamol as safe, and expectant parents are urged to rely on the advice of their healthcare providers, not political statements.

No, I don't get anything from a book of conspiracy theories. I deal in FACT. And you clearly are still believing the massive conspiracy that has now been widely exposed. Well, I guess you have to. You can't accept that you might have damaged your body with 5 jabs that are now widely recognised for the dangers they imposed.
Hint: The Conspiracy Theorists are the guys trying to silence question and debate. That would be the authorities who threatened to deregister any doctor who spoke out about concerns.

As for Tylenol or Shane Warne. Why would you ASSume, much less imagine, what I might believe or have stated? Only ASSes make assumptions about people they don't know. You just proved nothing you say has any validity.
Do you have nothing better to do in your life than rant abusively at people who don't agree with your conspiracy theories?

I'm really glad you have not noted any ill effects from the jab. I hope you never do. But news flash - one swallow doesn't make a summer. Your experience MEANS NOTHING. And what I stated is FACT, not hogwash. Who the hell are you to question my experiences? Your tone proves your ignorance.
You also have provided no proof, just incredibly unlikely stories.

The vaccine was NOT "new"! It was simply further development in area area where decades of work had already been done.

I don't believe your cliam that your
So now you are calling me a liar. That's pretty strong evidence that you are wrong. People don't get abusive and nasty when they are confident.

I won't respond further to your abuse. It is evidence that I touched a nerve. I am sorry if I raised concerns about the possible damage your 5 jabs might have done to your health.

People have, all throughout history, died from all the things you mentioned. Miscarriages. Stillbirths. etc etc. Your small group of friends all had these experiences. What a load of hogwash.I
I've had 5 jabs. No ill effects, never had COVID.
Tell me where you are getting this information from. "The Conspiracy Theorists Book of Deluded Information ".
You are so far down the rabbit hole you'll never find your way out.
I suppose you believe Tylenol also causes autism.
I imagine you're one of those that stated that Shane Warne died because of the jab. Nothing to do with his lifestyle of smoking and heavy drinking.
Do you not have anything better to do in your life??

So tell me, where do you get these FACTS from.
The astonishing increase in vaccinations has caused the astonishing increase in autism??? No joke, you believe that???
There has been an alarming decrease in immunisations, ever since the ex herion addict whacko JFKJnr started his hairbrained theories, which have been widely debunked by medical experts across the world , putting children's lives at risk.
Our generation were immunised at school for everything without all this whohah and most of these things had been eradicated. Now they are coming back.
What's your answer to that.

So why IS the instance of autism and ADHD increasing so rapidly?
Doesn’t it stand to reason that with rapidly increasing population worldwide, there will continue to be more and more incidences of autism and ADHD?

That makes sense to me since no one knows what the causes are.

I know two friends who refused to vaccinate their children. In one case, the eldest child has autism and in the other case, one child has high functioning autism. In both cases, the other siblings did not.

Reason? Sometimes things happen that defy reason. Until the proof is shown, we can only speculate.

I've had 8 COVID jabs. Plus probably another 50 for other things in my longish life. MY health is excellent.

Yes, you ARE a liar.

Of course numbers will increase with population increases, but percentages are increasing rapidly - and that's nothing to do with population growth. Your last paragraph is certainly correct, but if you read the latest research, there is strong evidence that the percentage of children diagnosed with autism and ADHD has increased in parallel with the increase in childhood vaccinations. That might be coincidental, but how can we be sure?

Certainly, these illnesses existed a century ago, so vaccination isn't the only factor. But there is cause to fear that it may be a factor in the huge increase. I suspect there are many other possible contributors - including IVF, Caesarian births, more formula feeding. Basically, anything that interferes with nature carries major risks in my opinion. Modern medicine has achieved great things, but the incidence of chronic illness and disability is increasing at an alarming rate, and many scientists are pointing to possible factors but being shut down by commercial interests and politicians who support those commercial interests. I guess I am just suspicious by nature. I've seen too much deception and political and commercial conspiracy. What I have seen has destroyed my ability to trust.

This has turned into "one of those" topics! Play nicely please :p
It's important to refute the lies of the conspiracy theorists, but they get abusive when we do.

What's your answer to that.
I have never said vaccines CAUSED the increase. I said increased childhood vaccinations has occurred in parallel with increased autism and ADHD. There is an abundance of data out there that suggest POSSIBLE links between autism and vaccines. Nobody knows for certain what is causing the increase in autism and ADHD (though it was recently claimed that it is being grossly over-diagnosed, and I suspect that is true). Powerful commercial interests rapidly shut down inconvenient scientific debate, sadly.
And no, the things we were vaccinated for are NOT coming back. What is prevalent today is heart disease - which is known to be connected to the Covid jab; and cancer (for most types there has never been a vaccination), Autism and ADHD (no vaccination exists to my knowledge and certainly no preventative measures are widely known), other mental illnesses (probably attributable to the increasing stresses of life and work), and various other ailments for which vaccinations do not exist.

We are not seeing large diphtheria, tetanus or polio outbreaks, thankfully. I have never believed measles, chicken pox or mumps were particularly harmful. Everyone I knew as a child had those diseases without any ill effects. I am glad I was vaccinated against the really serious ailments, though, including smallpox, cholera and typhoid. I am just concerned at the ever-increasing number of jabs babies are being subjected to, because I believe nature created a being with good natural immunities and I think too much interference with nature is likely to be harmful.

Frankly, I think aggressive responses to opinions are evidence of gross ignorance. The experts don't agree on these controversial topics, and science is about constant questioning and new discoveries. 'Settled' refers to religion, not science. And anyone who can't be open-minded and courteous in a debate is a zealot.

My answer 'to that' is that you don't know and neither do I and neither do the experts. We are all guessing, learning and hoping, with scientists making new discoveries every day. I know what I know - and that is that my doctor left general practice because she disagreed with the Covid jab campaign, and her replacement concurred with her view but was afraid to let anyone know because those who openly disagreed were bullied, and that proves the bullies were afraid of inconvenient truths being exposed. Similarly, doctors who question childhood vaccines are being bullied, and that evidences that commercial convenience may be prevailing over truth.

I also know that many, many people I know have suffered major ill effects from vaccines (one in particular) - including death in some cases. That is FACT. And it is cruel and disgusting in the extreme to dismiss their grief and claim you know more than they do about what caused their tragedy, when you have never even met them. Try doing some research with an open mind. You might be amazed at what you learn. But if you are not willing to be open minded, at least show some basic human decency.

Says the abuser who is peddling conspiracy theories and screamming vile insults at anyone who contests them.

Why is it important for YOUR UNVALIDATED OPINION to be accepted and anyone else's knowledge dismissed? What is important is for TRUTH to be exposed, and that requires courteous and intelligent discussion by open-minded people - something you clearly are not capable of.

Now retract your disgusting defamatory statement. It's fortunate I use an alias here, because if I were identifiable you might be facing a very expensive law suit. Only very stupid people made statements such as you made about people they don't know and topics they are clearly ignorant but indoctrinated on. Try doing some research. You will be amazed what you lean if you can lose the bigoted attitude.

Prove it. A Google search says otherwise. Yes, the incidence of disability in the general population is increasing,

"Increase in long-term health conditions:
A rise in chronic and long-term health conditions contributes to a greater number of people with disabilities."

And in this case, I certainly know a great deal that you don't.

Oops, my Caps Lock must’ve gotten stuck on the double “S” like yours did in your previous post #88 to @mylittletibbies. 😉
