This British woman reveals the three things she HATES about living in Australia

No matter how much research you do or how many people you talk to when you decide to move to a new country, there are always going to be some things that take you by surprise (and not in a good way).

For one British woman who made the move Down Under, the biggest pet peeves she encountered came in the form of traffic lights, toilets and café closing times.

Jordana Grace, who refers to herself as That British Girl on social media, recently took to Instagram with a video detailing the three 'weird' things she hates about living in Australia – and trust us when we say she was not pulling any punches.

'I'm scared to say this,' Jordana said at the beginning of her controversial video. 'Things they should tell you before coming to Australia - the three weird things I just don't like.'

So what exactly did she have to say? Well, for starters, Jordana takes issue with our traffic lights.

In her home country (and in many other places around the world), traffic lights go from red to orange to green gradually and give drivers time to get into gear before they start moving again.

But in Australia? Nope… it goes straight from red to green with no warning in between!

'Before I've even got into gear, the people behind me are like: "The lights are green, go!",' she said, adding, 'I don't like it. It stresses me out.'

Jordana also takes issue with the lack of toilets in cafes around the Sunshine Coast (where she currently lives). Many establishments here share toilets with other businesses nearby, and you need a key to use them - which can be pretty inconvenient if you suddenly need to go while you're out and about.

'It's not just a key; it's some shovel-like thing, so everyone knows where you're going when you're holding the shovel,' she went on to share.

Finally, one of her biggest gripes is how early cafes close their doors for the day – often by midday! This can make grabbing lunch or coffee later on in the afternoon quite difficult (especially if you don't want fast food).

'They all seem to close at like midday. What do you want me to do in the afternoon, socialise and meet new people? How dare you,' she complained jokingly.
We feel your pain on this one too; sometimes all we want is a nice hot cup of tea after 12pm but alas...our favourite cafe is already closed!

Realising that hurling such opinions might spark an intense backlash from Aussie users, Jordana said at the end of her video: 'I still love Australia, so please forgive me.'

Needless to say, her video soon caught the attention of Aussie users, who were quick to share their opinions regarding her 'disappointing' experiences.

One user who claimed to be from Melbourne sarcastically said that 'nothing closes here' and then added, 'and toilets are everywhere pretty much,' in his comment.

A second person agreed with Jordana that those things are annoying but later explained that it might be because of the state she's in. 'I live in Sydney, and we've always had yellow lights between green,' they said.

Another person simply commented, 'After midday, you go to the pub,' along with an emoji of two glasses of beer raised in a toast.
Key Takeaways

  • A British woman has revealed the three things she hates about living in Australia.
  • The three things she dislikes are the traffic light system, the lack of toilets, and cafe closing times.
  • Aussies have defended their habits, but others agree with the woman.
While Jordana says she still loves Australia despite these pet peeves, we imagine it probably wasn't easy for her to adjust when she first arrived here from the UK.

As an Australian, I'm appalled and extremely sorry that we are treating you so badly. yeah right.
If the UK was perfect why move or why are you still here.
Next time try Ukraine. I haven't heard one of them winging about traffic lights, toilets, or cafes closing early. They simply don't exist anymore with russia flattening everything.
Get a grip

I don't think this lady was criticising Australia, she, unfortunately, lives in Queensland, which we all know is a cross to bear. To clear up a couple of things, we have never had the traffic lights go, red, yellow, green. At least not since I worked on traffic lights during an apprenticeship some 70 years ago. There is no such time as 12pm and 12 am, there is 12 noon or just, noon, and 12 midnight or just ,midnight. Any Australian can find a dozen more thing they don't like here, but as for changing countries, NOT BLOODY LIKELY.

If it's that bad, go back to the UK! How long has she been here? I've been here since 1994 and certainly wouldn't go back! Great place 💕

Everybody has something they don't like about Australia whether they were born here or not. But most people shrug it off and get on with things instead of running to the media to whinge about "third world problems". Seriously, if those are the worst things she can say about Australia, she should realise how lucky she is to be living here. Here in WA, our traffic lights go straight from red to green and amazingly we all cope with that. If that stresses her out, she should not be allowed on the road. She sounds like a danger to others. The reason for the "shovel" attached to the toilet key is to reduce the possibility that a customer will walk off with the key - commonsense really. And the reason that the toilets have to be locked in the first place is for hygiene reasons because people are pigs. As for "everybody knows where you are going", so what? Honestly, who cares if they know she is going to the toilet!? Does she think people don't know that she has biological functions like the rest of us? As for limited cafe hours, perhaps that is related to the local area where she lives because it certainly isn't the case Australia-wide. In life, it behooves us to fit into the world as it is, not expect the world to fit in with us.

We were in the UK in July and in my opinion there are too many traffic lights, they even have them on roundabouts. At one place we had to get through 4 sets of lights just to get round the roundabout.

I am Australian but agree strongly that cafe opening (or more correctly NOT opening) hours are now ridiculous. In regional cities, it is almost impossible to find one still serving on-site customers after 2pm, and even in capital cities, 3.30 or 4pm is the latest. Want, or have to take, a later lunch? Sorry, lunch is served only between 11.30am and approximately 1.45pm. As for relaxing after work with a coffee and friends - forget it. Some bars do serve coffee, but the cafe ambience is missing. If the business can't afford to open for more than 5 -7 hours, could they not do as many European cafes do and have a "siesta" time?

There will always be things you either don't like OR are a uniquely different cultural change from what you grew up with . I find Australia an easy going and mostly friendly and helpful kind people with some quirky customs , like " the Shout " in the pub . Coming from Japan , it was a lot to digest and adjust to but when I get home things resume normal transmission . The only thing I am not overly joyed about it the lack of coutesey on the roads , but it's their country and their rules . When people come to my country of birth , it's our rules and our country , and it's easy with an electronic translators so communicating with some who have forgotten the english classes from high school is not a problem either , and you really only need 20 words to get by anyway . Cheers and thank you Australia .

Like everyone else who has issues, go back to England to the Cold miserable weather. At traffic lights you are supposed to be alert. And they wonder why they're called whinging poms!
As an expat Scot - after living here for 40 years it's amazing how many times I have had the response "go back home"when voicing the slightest criticism.
Lighten up people it is lighthearted criticism but you're making it an attack on the country. You can be a very sensitive lot!

I live in Melbourne and none of her complaints apply here, maybe she should move!
Traffic lights go red, amber, green, amber, red. I did notice they skip the amber in Queensland.
I have never known a cafe not to have its own toilet, very rarely it might be out the back, but I have never needed a key.
Cafes here do often close at around 2.30 or 3pm, but then they open at around 7.30am for breakfast.

Gosh, that’s quite funny really! In answer to Jordana I wish to say that in England I was caught with my pants down literally when the automatic door opened up on me in this large WC cubicle and I couldn’t reach the button on the wall to close it again!! One of the most embarrassing moments of my life….
That happened to me at Nabiac NSW. I will never use an automated toilet again. LOL

I live in Sydney and cafes both in the city and suburbs stay open until late.

Plenty of toilets around again in the city and the suburbs.

Don't our lights go from green to yellow to red.
When it goes from red to green you know pretty much when it happens.

I think she maybe at the lights....on her phone and is bipped when the light goes green.

My final comment ....If you don't like our beautiful country then go back home no one is keeping you here 🙂
Don’t be TOO harsh. The Lady is entitled to an opinion.
