This British woman reveals the three things she HATES about living in Australia

No matter how much research you do or how many people you talk to when you decide to move to a new country, there are always going to be some things that take you by surprise (and not in a good way).

For one British woman who made the move Down Under, the biggest pet peeves she encountered came in the form of traffic lights, toilets and café closing times.

Jordana Grace, who refers to herself as That British Girl on social media, recently took to Instagram with a video detailing the three 'weird' things she hates about living in Australia – and trust us when we say she was not pulling any punches.

'I'm scared to say this,' Jordana said at the beginning of her controversial video. 'Things they should tell you before coming to Australia - the three weird things I just don't like.'

So what exactly did she have to say? Well, for starters, Jordana takes issue with our traffic lights.

In her home country (and in many other places around the world), traffic lights go from red to orange to green gradually and give drivers time to get into gear before they start moving again.

But in Australia? Nope… it goes straight from red to green with no warning in between!

'Before I've even got into gear, the people behind me are like: "The lights are green, go!",' she said, adding, 'I don't like it. It stresses me out.'

Jordana also takes issue with the lack of toilets in cafes around the Sunshine Coast (where she currently lives). Many establishments here share toilets with other businesses nearby, and you need a key to use them - which can be pretty inconvenient if you suddenly need to go while you're out and about.

'It's not just a key; it's some shovel-like thing, so everyone knows where you're going when you're holding the shovel,' she went on to share.

Finally, one of her biggest gripes is how early cafes close their doors for the day – often by midday! This can make grabbing lunch or coffee later on in the afternoon quite difficult (especially if you don't want fast food).

'They all seem to close at like midday. What do you want me to do in the afternoon, socialise and meet new people? How dare you,' she complained jokingly.
We feel your pain on this one too; sometimes all we want is a nice hot cup of tea after 12pm but alas...our favourite cafe is already closed!

Realising that hurling such opinions might spark an intense backlash from Aussie users, Jordana said at the end of her video: 'I still love Australia, so please forgive me.'

Needless to say, her video soon caught the attention of Aussie users, who were quick to share their opinions regarding her 'disappointing' experiences.

One user who claimed to be from Melbourne sarcastically said that 'nothing closes here' and then added, 'and toilets are everywhere pretty much,' in his comment.

A second person agreed with Jordana that those things are annoying but later explained that it might be because of the state she's in. 'I live in Sydney, and we've always had yellow lights between green,' they said.

Another person simply commented, 'After midday, you go to the pub,' along with an emoji of two glasses of beer raised in a toast.
Key Takeaways

  • A British woman has revealed the three things she hates about living in Australia.
  • The three things she dislikes are the traffic light system, the lack of toilets, and cafe closing times.
  • Aussies have defended their habits, but others agree with the woman.
While Jordana says she still loves Australia despite these pet peeves, we imagine it probably wasn't easy for her to adjust when she first arrived here from the UK.

I think she should return to the UK.
Or, perhaps buy an automatic vehicle which remains in gear with your foot on the brake.
What a load of rubbish! Here in SA we have public toilets everywhere, and to my knowledge all our cafe's stay open all day.
If thats all she has to complain about then she should go home.

Nowhere is perfect but definitely agree with cafe comment, especially for after school refreshments. I understand cafes would have to work long hours, as they open so early but it would be nice just the same.

I'm not trying to be rude but why do you need after school refreshments? Surely after school you are on your way home where you can get whatever refreshments you require a damn site cheaper than from a cafe. Surely the kids can last another 15, 30 or more minutes without starving?

I live in Melbourne and there's no problem with traffic lights, cafes or toilets, although the key thing does happen in some places. I avoid the places where you have to have the paddle with the key.

She says she lives on the Sunshine Coast and I don't believe for one minute that cafes close at 12 noon. As for traffic lights, in Queensland they always go from red to green, pay attention and get used to.

I live in Sydney and cafes both in the city and suburbs stay open until late.

Plenty of toilets around again in the city and the suburbs.

Don't our lights go from green to yellow to red.
When it goes from red to green you know pretty much when it happens.

I think she maybe at the lights....on her phone and is bipped when the light goes green.

My final comment ....If you don't like our beautiful country then go back home no one is keeping you here 🙂
She said despite those comments she loves Australia, please read the whole article before commenting...

Where she's living at the Sunny Coast in Qld ... I doubt it!
Definitely not the case here on the Gold Coast.
I have always loved the UK, however being a tourist is vastly different to living there. In saying that, I have a couple of friends who's kids live there working in London and loving it!

If these are the extent of the worries in her life then she's getting away cheap! Plan your day girl, take your own lunch and drink when you go out then it doesn't matter when the cafes close. Maybe keep your eyes on the lights so you are aware of when they change and maybe go to the loo before you go out. Problems solved and it wasn't hard was it! ;)

Every ex-pom has a problem adjusting to a new environment. It took me perhaps 2 years to feel really comfortable after moving here. now at times I still feel uncomfortable when faced with a situation outside my comfort zone. We came here while Australia was still trying to keep the white Australian policy. Now look at the place, no wonder I feel uncomfortable sometimes. Mind you there were many things about Britain that made us come here mostly to see the sun for more than a week in the summer instead of the horrible grey that even seems to infiltrate the people who live there. Give me Australia every time, I have been back only once & will never go again I hated my whole time there. We all have phobias about things but we have to take them in our stride.
