Safety concerns for Aussie tourists in France amid Olympic festivities: Disturbing attacks raise alarms

Content warning: This article contains descriptions of violent attacks and sexual assault that may be distressing to some. Reader discretion is advised.

The excitement of the Olympics is often accompanied by a sense of camaraderie and international unity, but recent events in France have cast a shadow over the festivities, raising concerns about the safety of tourists flocking to the country for the games.

In a disturbing series of events, two Australian tourists were subjected to a harrowing incident shortly after the world turned its eyes to the Olympic Games.

This alarming event follows another distressing case involving an Australian woman in Paris, highlighting concerns about the safety of travellers in the region.

The police are investigating the incident near the bustling Saint-Charles station in Marseille—a hub for travellers that should have been a safe passage for Australian tourists.

Instead, a couple of Australians were confronted by two assailants who resorted to physical violence, with one being punched in the stomach before the thieves made off with their luggage.

The stolen items included a Rolex watch, a drone, two laptops, a phone, two cameras, a tablet, luxury leather goods, €200 ($330) in cash, and several bank cards.

This attack comes on the heels of an even more harrowing incident in Paris, where an Australian woman was gang-raped in the Pigalle district, known for its nightlife and the iconic Moulin Rouge cabaret.

The woman had been enjoying the local bars and clubs before being preyed upon by a group of five men ‘of African appearance’.

The assault took place at 5:00 AM on Saturday, July 27, leaving the victim to seek refuge in a nearby Dounia kebab shop, visibly distressed and desperate for help.

The kebab shop's CCTV footage captured the chilling aftermath of the attack, showing the woman, ‘her dress inside out’, seeking solace among the staff and patrons who attempted to comfort her.

The audacity of one of the alleged rapists, who entered the shop and even patted the victim on the back before ordering food, is a stark reminder of the brazen nature of such crimes.

A diner then confronted the alleged attacker, taking a swing as staff intervened to separate them. The man subsequently exited the restaurant.

Staff and patrons, including several men and a blonde woman in a beige dress, comfort the woman until the police arrive.

Two officers were seen talking to her about the traumatic incident before she was taken to Bichat Hospital.

The woman also reported that her mobile phone had been stolen.

She was said to be ‘disoriented and unable to speak a word of French’ while recounting the incident to the police, reportedly unable to provide details on the exact location or circumstances of the attack.

In light of the recent incidents involving Australian tourists in France, where safety concerns have escalated following violent attacks, the Australian government has issued a stern warning to travellers.

These troubling events, including the assault on the Channel 9 Olympics broadcast team in Paris, underscore the importance of heightened vigilance and awareness for Australians abroad.

Certainly people have been gang raped, robbed beaten and murdered in Australia and we all know from whence this last lot have come from. Personally I think that if anyone is convicted of any major crime then not only do they lose their liberty but also their families are summarily deported. No doubt I'm going to be called out but I believe that how people are raised is how they act in future.
I agree, why are we bringing in people from countries where violence is a way of life. They do not know how to live like civilised people.
There are genuine people out there who would be happy to make a new life in Australia and become productive citizens.

I think a lot of people forget that this country was built on convicts - criminals. Our jails are full, we are the last ones to be throwing stones. There are good and bad in every race. If you've had a bad run in with a particular race of course you'll be feeling bias against them - but they're not all bad. If you think you can basket a whole race and wish them all dead, then take a ticket from Hitler and join his queue.

I don't think anyone has said that. We know there are good and bad in all. But if you come to this country and commit a hideous crime then you should be sent back from where you come from.

People come here and try to fit into our way of life but unfortunately there are also people who come here and try to change our country to suit them. I know I have lived in Lakemba an area that is Moslem dominated.

As for the convicts , many were brought over for such petty crimes as stealing a loaf of bread 🍞

Hitler is dead. I am alive. There lies the difference.

And your point is?

Well said Suzanne Rose. When we go to other countries we are expected to follow their customs and laws, it should be reciprocated, especially if these people are intending to make this their permanent home.
I must admit though I am always embarassed , when in Bali, to admit I'm Australian.
So many people leave their brains (if they had any to start with)behind, it starts from the moment they get on the plane. It's not just the guys either.

You had a chance of being hanged for stealing a bread roll, that's also one of the reasons for the baker's dozen?

Pamsterdam....Amsterdam....

Do I see a correlation there? I wouldn't talk up the Netherlands as a squeaky clean country either. The rate of homicide per capita is very similar to Australia.

I know what you mean with Bali !!

A friend of ours ,who lives in sydney was asked to do the security in a new prison being built in an Arab country. It was during Ramadan and 44 deg , he wasn't allowed to even drink water in the open . He needed to go in his car and bend down.

He ended up declining the job and came home.

His comment was , he had to respect their customs while in their country , even women getting of the plane were told they needed to cover their head.

Ok they have their rules and if we visit their country we need to obide by them.
But they also need to obide by our rules and not try to change things to suit them.

Now we are told of many young people be radicalised.

Last week a 21 year old tried to bomb the toilet at Westfield Miranda. Lucky he foiled it . He was arrested and also found to have a knife on him. Who knows what damage he could have done.

My son works at Westfield Miranda

Such simple solutions. "Send em back, and their families!"" Torture them violently!" Horse’s Head? Be careful what you wish for and what hornet's nest you want to poke.

Yes, we do have a lot of media-driven hype/political communication/influence reporting, and who runs our media? Who and what are they aligned to/with? I guess war is a solution? Who is included in this KISS solution? All immigrants? NZ did not appreciate our thoughts on that matter. Crime has been around and active here for a long time. Mafia - Italian/Greek/Russian… Asian - Yakuza, etc. - not so much reported on but still they are doing their work…

Surely we need to be very careful how we deal with things and what language we use.?? Hate speak has a way of coming back to bite you harder. It absolutely does nothing good! Hope you senior citizens are happy to put your lives on the front line and keep up your big talk!

Pamsterdam makes a good point!

Once again, you are being very self-centric. Are you saying you and others, acted as vigilantes and were party to the crime of murder? Wow, I did not realise SDC was an on-line forum for extreme racial ideology, including violence.

I can make my comments without violent anger speech from you - and you seem to be sailing very close to the wind of threatening speech.

Let's just say, I am not to be messed with, in person. I'm not a keyboard warrior, more a footpath warrior. I prefer to deal with issues IN PERSON. I don't shirk the task. I don't start a conflict....I finish them.

Just wrap yourself in cotton wool, hide behind your flimsy front door and hope it doesn't happen to you. You probably think this whole thing is inconsequential. Not when over 25 people I have known have died from heroin overdoses in the 1980s and 1990s. ALL AT THE HANDS OF LEBANESE HEROIN SUPPLIERS! I could go on.

Are you are a Muslim apologist? Do you support Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic State and the other fringe fundamentalist Islamic terrorists? If you answered yes to one or both of these questions, then you are the one supporting violence.

Those questions were designed to determine your stance on the issue and not an accusation. Make that clear.
