Do you have an LG solar battery? You may be at risk for a house fire!
- Replies 13
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a recall notice for ‘potentially deadly solar batteries’ used in thousands of homes across the country.
The batteries, from brands including LG, SolaX, Opal,Red EarthRed Eguana, Redback, Red Earth, and VARTA, were found to be at risk of overheating and catching fire.
The ACCC will be reaching out directly to around 5000 households ‘likely’ using solar power with the affected brands in the next few weeks to advise them of the recall and the risks of continued use of the batteries.
‘This recall has been updated twice to include new models, affected systems and dates of manufacture, so even if your battery was not recalled previously, you must check your battery’s serial number,’ said Delia Rickard, Deputy Chair of the ACCC.
‘We remain very concerned about the fire risks these faulty batteries pose, so please act quickly,’ she urged.
Consumers are advised to check the serial numbers of their solar batteries and run them through LG’s serial number checker.
If you find that your battery is affected by the recall, switch it off immediately according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If unable to do so, please reach out to the solar power system’s installer or reach LG Energy Solution (including Redback, Red Earth, Evolve, and VARTA brand batteries) on 1300 677 273 or at [email protected].
SolaX and Opal solar battery users may also reach SolaX Power on 1300 476 529 or at [email protected].
‘Unfortunately, since October 2019 there have been nine reported incidents involving these types of batteries in Australia resulting in property damage and one injury. We do not want to see any more incidents or injuries.’ Rickard said.
‘While we are trying to reach as many affected households as possible in the coming weeks, please don’t wait to be contacted. Check if your battery has been recalled and take action now.’

LG will replace batteries affected by the recall manufactured between March 29, 2017, and September 13, 2018, for free. Customers can also choose a refund instead and have the affected batteries uninstalled at no cost according to the ACCC.
Additionally, LG has proposed the use of diagnostic software to help detect an additional 10,000 solar batteries also at risk of overheating.
Regulators are currently assessing LG’s proposed solution.
