Do you have an LG solar battery? You may be at risk for a house fire!

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a recall notice for ‘potentially deadly solar batteries’ used in thousands of homes across the country.

The batteries, from brands including LG, SolaX, Opal,Red EarthRed Eguana, Redback, Red Earth, and VARTA, were found to be at risk of overheating and catching fire.

The ACCC will be reaching out directly to around 5000 households ‘likely’ using solar power with the affected brands in the next few weeks to advise them of the recall and the risks of continued use of the batteries.

‘This recall has been updated twice to include new models, affected systems and dates of manufacture, so even if your battery was not recalled previously, you must check your battery’s serial number,’ said Delia Rickard, Deputy Chair of the ACCC.

‘We remain very concerned about the fire risks these faulty batteries pose, so please act quickly,’ she urged.

Consumers are advised to check the serial numbers of their solar batteries and run them through LG’s serial number checker.

If you find that your battery is affected by the recall, switch it off immediately according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If unable to do so, please reach out to the solar power system’s installer or reach LG Energy Solution (including Redback, Red Earth, Evolve, and VARTA brand batteries) on 1300 677 273 or at [email protected].

SolaX and Opal solar battery users may also reach SolaX Power on 1300 476 529 or at [email protected].

‘Unfortunately, since October 2019 there have been nine reported incidents involving these types of batteries in Australia resulting in property damage and one injury. We do not want to see any more incidents or injuries.’ Rickard said.

‘While we are trying to reach as many affected households as possible in the coming weeks, please don’t wait to be contacted. Check if your battery has been recalled and take action now.’

LG will replace batteries affected by the recall manufactured between March 29, 2017, and September 13, 2018, for free. Customers can also choose a refund instead and have the affected batteries uninstalled at no cost according to the ACCC.

Additionally, LG has proposed the use of diagnostic software to help detect an additional 10,000 solar batteries also at risk of overheating.

Regulators are currently assessing LG’s proposed solution.

Damn, I was just beginning to look at solar batteries and their suitability for my use. I thought Lg would be a viable brand as they are widely known.
Now I don't know whether to continue my research or shelve the idea for a while until we have the all clear that all batteries are safe. ;) :( :(

Would not touch LG products with a ‘barge pole’!

A colleague’s LG Fridge Freezer caught fire and destroyed half his house. our LG Dishwasher flooded the top half of our house, shorted all downstairs lights, destroyed the floor which required us to move out for 10 days whilst our Insurance arranged accommodation - animal boarding -re-surfacing/polishing floors - painting & electrical work. Would never consider anything made by LG ever again!

I have an Lg fridge/freezer that must be approaching 10 years old, I also have an Lg washing machine (4 yrs old) and tv (easily 10 yrs old) . So far none have given me a day's strife but when I did have to contact their repair department (the removalists dented the fridge door and had to be replaced) I found them very courteous and helpful. :)

I would wait a little I'm guessing there will be more added to this list.
I've got solar hot water and hubby has been looking at solar so we can save on electricity but it's a little confusing knowing which one

I got mine through Origin, they were offering interest free over 3 years and 25ckw/hr back to grid for the length of the loan. That back to grid amount gave me the opportunity to get into credit with my power bills and I've stayed in credit ever since, slowly adding to it every year. I haven't paid an electricity bill now for 5 years.:)

It's always important to prioritize safety, especially when it comes to energy systems in your home. I would recommend that you contact LG directly for more information on this issue, and to find out what steps you can take to ensure the safety of your solar battery system.
Additionally, if you're interested in learning more about solar batteries and their potential risks, you can check out the resources available at yenex.com. They can help you choose a reliable and not expensive solar panel that would fit your needs and expectations. Good luck and stay safe!

LG Dishwasher pumped water across our wooden floor, flooded through ceiling to downstairs and ruined some electrics. Insurance paid for furniture to be moved out, resurfacing of floor, electrical repairs and decoration. We spent a week living in a rented house and our pets had to be boarded. Work colleague had LG appliance set fire to his home, destroying half of the building. Nuff said.
