Discover what's special about the first King's Birthday public holiday for many Aussies

As you might already be aware, we're about to celebrate the King's Birthday public holiday for the first time on June 12th. We've had 70 years of honouring Queen Elizabeth II, and adjusting to the new title might feel a bit odd, but we know this special day will remain memorable.

While the King's Birthday isn't celebrated uniformly across all of Australia, it will be observed in New South Wales, Victoria, the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Tasmania on the second Monday in June.

The ACT will also join in the commemoration, although they'll refer to it as 'Sovereign's Birthday'. It's worth noting that Queensland plans to mark this day on October 2nd, while Western Australia moved their celebration to September 25th in 2022.

Intriguingly, none of these dates align with King Charles III's 75th birthday, which falls on November 14, 2023. Instead, the June 12th date aligns with the UK's long-standing tradition of celebrating the monarch's birthday on the second weekend of June.

So, what does this mean for us on the King's Birthday public holiday?

Unlike Good Friday, Christmas Day, and ANZAC Day, the King's Birthday doesn't affect trading. Therefore, you won't experience the widespread store closures common to these other public holidays.

Businesses will, for the most part, operate as usual. However, be mindful that some stores may modify their trading hours or remain closed for the day.

Australians have a wealth of exciting events to look forward to during the King's Birthday celebrations. Here are a couple of highlights:

The Big Freeze Match

AFL enthusiasts have a lot to be excited about. An event that has become a staple of the public holiday is the Big Freeze match, taking place between Collingwood and Melbourne.

This captivating match is more than just a sporting event—it also functions as a vital fundraiser for Fight MND, an organisation dedicated to finding a cure for motor neurone disease.

Former AFL coach and player Neale Daniher, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2013, initiated the Big Freeze.

Now in its ninth year, the event has attracted notable personalities such as actor Eric Bana and surfer Mick Fanning, who take the plunge into icy waters at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) before the AFL match commences.

For those wanting to partake in the excitement, Channel 7 will be broadcasting live coverage from 2 pm.

Vivid Sydney

For those residing in or visiting Sydney, we strongly encourage you to experience Vivid Sydney.

This enchanting festival, which continues until June 17, engulfs the city in a spectacle of vibrant light displays, invigorating live performances, and unique culinary delights.

This is a golden opportunity to enjoy one of the final evenings of this impressive event.

King's birthday? Why can't they put the birthday date on his actual birthday instead of a make believe one. Means nothing having that day on the send Monday of June.

How on earth can they change this ?
Queens Birthday was named after QUEEN VICTORIA. It was her birthday as was QUEENSLAND !
