‘Un-Australian’ behaviour? Shocking state of public BBQ sparks outrage!

Australia is a land of traditions that are cherished and celebrated, from the royal show to the beloved sport of cricket. But there is perhaps no tradition more quintessentially Aussie than the BBQ.

For generations, friends and family have gathered around the grill, soaking up the sunshine.

Frew Park is one such popular destination for Aussies seeking a relaxing day out in the great outdoors.

With its picturesque lawns and gardens and shared amenities, it's the perfect spot for a classic Aussie BBQ. Or at least, it should be….

A recent photo posted to Reddit has revealed the shocking state of the public barbecue at Frew Park, sparking a wave of anger and frustration in the community.

The picture showed the hotplate blackened by burnt-on food and the surrounding benchtop area littered with soft plastics, food scraps and discarded utensils.

Unsurprisingly, the image provoked a strong reaction, with Aussies calling the act 'un-Australian'.

One person wrote: ‘That's definitely a crime. How gross are these people?’

‘This is why we can't have nice things,’ another added.

Meanwhile, some commenters also saw the funny side of the situation, with jokes about the '$7 worth of cheese' being 'left behind in this economy'.

But while there was some amusement, most people agreed that those responsible should be held accountable and that everyone has a responsibility to leave public facilities the way they found them or in a better condition.

Some comments also pointed out that this kind of behaviour could lead to the removal of public barbecues as councils won’t want to maintain facilities that aren’t being respected by the public.

One comment read: ‘Public service announcement: if you're going to use public utilities such as this, leave it the way you found it or in better condition than you found it. Please have some decency.’

‘And people wonder why councils are removing public BBQ facilities,’ another said.

While Brisbane City Council ensures regular cleaning of barbecues in its more than 2000 parks, users have generally acknowledged the responsibility of park visitors to leave public amenities clean after use.

Unfortunately, there are those people out there who refuse to do their part and leave the cleaning up to local councils – believing it's their job.

‘Some people used to say this too. They thought they were creating employment,’ one user claimed.

I would not like to see the state of the homes of people who leave there shit for someone else to clean up.

pigs!!!

The crews assigned to clean up after these grots could be employed elsewhere so it is not creating employment but stretching the employment time over more areas. Why would anyone thing this is ok and if they were to use it after someone else had done this, would they be outraged?

This is disgusting. It is pure laziness. Is this what their taught them? Common decency is becoming uncommon these days. This is, in some ways, similar to people dropping rubbish on the ground when there is a bin 20m away. My wife and I carry our rubbish until we find a bin. Sometimes when we have been looking for a bin with rubbish in our hands, the locals would tell us that the bin is behind that tree etc.
Some people don't understand how good things are in Australia. In most other countries around the world, there is a lack of these facilities. One day this will happen here as well. Then people will whinge.
For example, we have free public toilets here but in most countries we had trouble finding them and then it costs to use them.
I don't know how to convey the message of decency to these sort of people.

Any person who could walk away and leave a barbecue in a public facility in that disgusting mess should be ashamed oh but you'd first need to have a conscience. Also while we're on the rules of being polite as mentioned earlier, I see you should queue when waiting to be served or waiting for a bus or taxi however, people prefer to wait all over the place and then say they are first regardless, when you point out in a friendly manner that there is a queue you are accused of being rude to them. Go figure.

This is why we have to have "Clean Up Australia" every year because some louts just don't get it. My Godmother says these people weren't raised properly and taught that kindness and cleanliness are the main lessons to be taught.

Why, Why, Why?. The morons who used this "Fee" BBQ most likely were not born and bred in Australia. Although there are some Aussies who don't give a Rats Ar** about doing the right thing when using these utilities made available FREE by local councils. Their house is most likely in the same state as the barbie.

Very rarely use a public BBQ in my local area but when I do I always OCD clean it first.
Went to use a BBQ at Southbank in Qld many yrs ago only to find someone had :poop: on it. Obviously didn't use the facilities that day and have never considered using them since.
Some people are just ferals and shouldn't be allowed to mix with the general public.

When we have a get together with my wife's photography group I always disinfect and thourally reclean the public BBQs even if they look clean then I cook
If and when we need to use a public BBQ first we turn it on, let it heat up a bit, then throw some water on it before cleaning it with kitchen towels before using it. And the same after we’ve finished using it.
Unfortunately, you cannot teach PIGS to be humans with culture!

Wow, what a day to have eyes! I hope whoever left that on the BBQ hits their toe on a table leg everyday...

Reminds me of the occasion we took a bus load of youth from the Church away for a holiday. We booked into a facility owned by a school with dorms etc.
The first task was to clean the oven & grill before it could be used. This was in a similar condition to the BBQ in the photo. We do not know who previously rented this facility but obviously they didn't clean up their mess either.

These sort of conditions are breeding places for unwanted insects. Disgusting situation.

You would not even consider using a public BBQ if you have seen some of the things I have seen on them. Things like faeces, used condoms, rotten food, dirty nappies, etc have put me off using them for life.
