‘Un-Australian’ behaviour? Shocking state of public BBQ sparks outrage!

Australia is a land of traditions that are cherished and celebrated, from the royal show to the beloved sport of cricket. But there is perhaps no tradition more quintessentially Aussie than the BBQ.

For generations, friends and family have gathered around the grill, soaking up the sunshine.

Frew Park is one such popular destination for Aussies seeking a relaxing day out in the great outdoors.

With its picturesque lawns and gardens and shared amenities, it's the perfect spot for a classic Aussie BBQ. Or at least, it should be….

A recent photo posted to Reddit has revealed the shocking state of the public barbecue at Frew Park, sparking a wave of anger and frustration in the community.

The picture showed the hotplate blackened by burnt-on food and the surrounding benchtop area littered with soft plastics, food scraps and discarded utensils.

Unsurprisingly, the image provoked a strong reaction, with Aussies calling the act 'un-Australian'.

One person wrote: ‘That's definitely a crime. How gross are these people?’

‘This is why we can't have nice things,’ another added.

Meanwhile, some commenters also saw the funny side of the situation, with jokes about the '$7 worth of cheese' being 'left behind in this economy'.

But while there was some amusement, most people agreed that those responsible should be held accountable and that everyone has a responsibility to leave public facilities the way they found them or in a better condition.

Some comments also pointed out that this kind of behaviour could lead to the removal of public barbecues as councils won’t want to maintain facilities that aren’t being respected by the public.

One comment read: ‘Public service announcement: if you're going to use public utilities such as this, leave it the way you found it or in better condition than you found it. Please have some decency.’

‘And people wonder why councils are removing public BBQ facilities,’ another said.

While Brisbane City Council ensures regular cleaning of barbecues in its more than 2000 parks, users have generally acknowledged the responsibility of park visitors to leave public amenities clean after use.

Unfortunately, there are those people out there who refuse to do their part and leave the cleaning up to local councils – believing it's their job.

‘Some people used to say this too. They thought they were creating employment,’ one user claimed.

This is not the first time Aussies have been left infuriated over an act of littering. In this article, we shared how a newly-engaged couple faced backlash after their ‘messy’ public engagement went viral online.

The thing applies to Public Toilets!. The state some people leave them is discusting. I often find them clogged with paper that won't flush away or worse things. Obviously these people have never been toilet trained!.

If and when we need to use a public BBQ first we turn it on, let it heat up a bit, then throw some water on it before cleaning it with kitchen towels before using it. And the same after we’ve finished using it.
Unfortunately, you cannot teach PIGS to be humans with culture!
Kudos ... Catherines... I DO THE SAME... AND SHUT-UP ABOUT IT. Why encourgage councils to shutdown these BBQs ... Just clean it and SET AN EXAMPLE INSTEAD OF BLOODY WHINGEING.

YES, THERE ARE PIGS EVERYWHERE BUT THERE IS LITTLE YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
You see... We bred these little pigs and followed Dr Spock religiously... WE STUFFED UP BECAUSE WE DIDN'T DO A VERY GOOD JOB... Just take along the JIF, BLUE WIPES, A PAINT SCRAPER and a small bucket for water.... FORGET ABOUT THE MESS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE so that you can enjoy instead of bitching.

I only ever used one once. 'Never again' is a huge understatement :LOL:

Things taught as children should be things to keep in our lives constantly until they are in grained. Many today have turned the simplest & common decency to others' out the window. It is the adults you can constantly blame for such filthy bbqs in our lovely Parks. Been there, & no matter WHAT age you are for telling them, they'll have a swipe @ you. We get provided with the best appliances but there is always the abusive. I'm disgusted how Australia has gone to such a downright level. Pigs are clean compared to what is happening amongst human beings.

Esma, In 1958 - 1960, We got the Westlander Train (Brande-New) ... Brisbane to Cunnamulla with Sleeper bunks if required. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. One of the nicest trains in Qld.
School Christmas Holidays came and they allowed the school kids to travel on it, as the old coal trains were being made redundant.
We bordered the train in Toowoomba at 11pm AND there were kids from Brisbane already settled in. Most of them in Sleepers.
Next Morning we stopped for Breakfast at Roma. The bunks were all folded and seating was prepared in each carriage.
Eventually, 3 of my mates did our usual walk to say hello to the kids we know, and we came across a section with Boys from Brisbane in it and ONE KID HAD CUT A FOOT LONG GASH IN THE BRAND NEW SEATS.
I know we shouldn't have taken action ourselves BUT if no-one did anything the authorities were NOT informed correctly. So we took the kid responsible for the vandalism to task and after a good hiding, he apologized and swore that he would never do anything destructible again.
We took pride in our new train BUT there is always someone with a chip on their shoulder wanting to destroy.
How do you stop them .. It happened in parks and recreation areas back in the late 50s and only got worse. On the percentage of idiot per head of population today may be about the same. The population has more than tripled since those years.
You should have seen the toilet blocks... remember the penny per deposit They were smashed so often the councils took the penny-boxes off and that was a money saver.

When we were younger, my sisters did something similar to my stepmum's new couch. My stepmum was livid!

'Idiot per head of population' is also something I'm glad to have read, great one @Vet543!
