‘They thought I was dead’: Grandfather becomes target of brutal scooter assault

Content warning: This article mentions physical violence against the elderly, which some might find upsetting. Reader’s discretion is advised.

Mark Smedley, a 63-year-old grandfather from Adelaide, was going about his day like any other.

As he sat at an intersection in his car, little did he know his life was about to change in an instant.

According to police, a group of young people approached Mark's car in Roy Tce and Gulfview Rd in Christies Beach on the afternoon of 23 January.

Without provocation, one member of the group threw a scooter at Mark's vehicle, shattering the back window.

When Mark got out to assess the damage, the alleged 24-year-old attacker assaulted him.

'He (the alleged offender) was just screaming like a madman, and the scooter went straight through the back window of the car,' Mark recalled.

Reports say the alleged attack left Mark lying on the road in a pool of blood.

‘A couple of witnesses said by the way they saw that scooter bounce off my head and the way I went down, they thought I was dead,’ Mark said.

‘I was just concerned if I shut my eyes and passed out again, the inside images of this ambulance might be the last thing I see.’

Witnesses rushed to help Mark before paramedics arrived.

Mark suffered a fractured skull, as well as injuries to his hand and knee, requiring surgery. He was also traumatised to leave his home.

‘You don’t expect someone to walk up to your car and smash the window out,’ he said.

Police said the 24-year-old man was accused of hitting Mark. But the alleged attacker then assaulted two responding police officers, injuring one officer seriously.

The man faced multiple offences, including aggravated assault causing harm.

At his first court appearance, prosecutors alleged he had 121 prior convictions and breached his bail conditions 17 times.

Court documents also revealed he had conditions that affected his brain development, like fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

He claimed in court that Mark ran over his foot.

In a previous story, two women aged 63 and 58 were reportedly attacked by a patient in a hospital’s ER department.

The same assailant was alleged to have inflicted bodily harm on their 81-year-old mum. You can read more about the story here.

That was pretty much my brother and sister. Never give up , I have seen pretty people do a 360 turn around
Thank you for the encouragement @Suzanne rose. My youngest son provided plenty of challenges, drugs, alcohol and doing stupid sh*t. Landed in prison twice. But he grew up at about the age of 30. Is 40 now and I couldn’t be prouder of him. He has a 9yr old son and is the best dad I’ve ever seen. He’s used his life experiences to be a wonderful human being.
(I won’t post any of his tattoos - most are from high times and prison. 😆)

Since the Labor govt. let all these criminals freeM imported millions of people who are not skilled to do honest work, (they are skilled to rob and murder) and more and boats full of criminals arrive here (not genuine refugees). Crime is more than ever and out of control! No one is safe anymore. The police do their best to get these criminal demons behind bars, but they all get bail over and over and over again. LABOR HAS TO GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!View attachment 41623
Are you for real 😳 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The problem no matter which government is in the court system and the use of ADHD,brain development because of drug's,/alcohol etc and the solicitors etc use every trick in the book to get these thugs out on bail etc so until the judges, Magistrates grow some ball's ,brain's and stop letting them out nothing will change 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

My eldest son is 41 , he didn't do good at school but was a champion sports person . We tried so hard to get him help with school but he just couldn't concentrate and was always in trouble.
Then at 17 he came to us and told us he was addicted to heroin. It was my brother who put the first needle in his arm ( hubby will never speak to my brother again ) he then drove a car in an armed robbery, to him he never did the robbery as he said he was only in the car .

Detectives came by and basically said if we didn't get him home and phone them then they couldn't say how it would end. How they said it they basically said they may shoot him.

He came home , we called the police and he was arrested . Hubby and I looked at each other and said how does it feel to be Judas .

He was 17 spent 8 weeks in a juvenile detention centre . We went to court and because of the drugs and his willingness to get help , we were able to get him admitted to the Chris O'Brien's rehabilitation centre for 12 weeks.

This was his turn around .

Now 25 years larter He is now 41 and the best dad to two kids including a 15 year old autistic boy. He has now also helped young people in his area , and is a very hard worker

No matter how low he got, we never gave up . It was bloody hard and something I wouldn't wish on any parent but we got there and hopefully your grandson will do it.

One thing my son said , helped him was a letter I wrote him telling him that our love was forever no matter what but what we didn't love was what he was doing. But I knew he would come back to the kind and caring person that he was .

Maybe write your grandson a letter. Reading sinks in more than hearing words

There needs to be tougher penalties and jail time for these offenders. Scare needs to be put into these people before the crime happens. Make examples of people so hopefully it is a deterrent to others.

Also take away luxury from prison, if they do a crime then they need to do hard time
Well said….i agree 100%………If we are to take in people under refugee status then they should absolutely be punished for crimes they commit while waiting to be integrated into the community…..and punishment needs to be harsh enough to send a strong message to the offenders that really hits home……I know that all of them aren’t bad or taking advantage of what’s on offer, but we have a bad enough problem with our own to then have to deal with other people……

Well the Libs are worse, due to them we nearly went to war with China, so it doesn’t matter who’s in power, their going to make our lives hell anyway.
When did we “ nearly go to War with China ”? Can we cease with the Slanderous and untruthful statements, please.
