‘They thought I was dead’: Grandfather becomes target of brutal scooter assault

Content warning: This article mentions physical violence against the elderly, which some might find upsetting. Reader’s discretion is advised.

Mark Smedley, a 63-year-old grandfather from Adelaide, was going about his day like any other.

As he sat at an intersection in his car, little did he know his life was about to change in an instant.

According to police, a group of young people approached Mark's car in Roy Tce and Gulfview Rd in Christies Beach on the afternoon of 23 January.

Without provocation, one member of the group threw a scooter at Mark's vehicle, shattering the back window.

When Mark got out to assess the damage, the alleged 24-year-old attacker assaulted him.

'He (the alleged offender) was just screaming like a madman, and the scooter went straight through the back window of the car,' Mark recalled.

Reports say the alleged attack left Mark lying on the road in a pool of blood.

‘A couple of witnesses said by the way they saw that scooter bounce off my head and the way I went down, they thought I was dead,’ Mark said.

‘I was just concerned if I shut my eyes and passed out again, the inside images of this ambulance might be the last thing I see.’

Witnesses rushed to help Mark before paramedics arrived.

Mark suffered a fractured skull, as well as injuries to his hand and knee, requiring surgery. He was also traumatised to leave his home.

‘You don’t expect someone to walk up to your car and smash the window out,’ he said.

Police said the 24-year-old man was accused of hitting Mark. But the alleged attacker then assaulted two responding police officers, injuring one officer seriously.

The man faced multiple offences, including aggravated assault causing harm.

At his first court appearance, prosecutors alleged he had 121 prior convictions and breached his bail conditions 17 times.

Court documents also revealed he had conditions that affected his brain development, like fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

He claimed in court that Mark ran over his foot.

Sadly, physical violence against seniors isn’t exactly rare in Australia.

In a previous story, two women aged 63 and 58 were reportedly attacked by a patient in a hospital’s ER department.

The same assailant was alleged to have inflicted bodily harm on their 81-year-old mum. You can read more about the story here.

Well the Libs are worse, due to them we nearly went to war with China, so it doesn’t matter who’s in power, their going to make our lives hell anyway.
Rubbish to war with China - those bastards screwed our farmers etc and allowed produce to rot on their wharves - farmers etc didn't get paid - I was with the LNP on this!

Tougher sentencing would work. My nephew is again incarcerated and it doesn't bother him as he gets great food, still works out has a TV in his room ect and whenever he is locked up he has friends in whichever prison he gets locked up in.

Maybe if all these things are taken away and they are made to work hard they may think twice

My father is in Maitland jail and ge told my half brother it's like a holiday farm. My father is 82.

This is why I don't have contact with this side of my family
I understand that the privileges granted to prisoners seem to be lenient and the removal of them as a punishment is a good idea. However that’s really a different argument to the one of what their sentence is. You have to actually get them in gaol first before privileges can be granted or removed. I agree that it’s a huge problem that can’t be easily solved.
Sometimes we’re better off alone rather than being bought into the way of life of our family that we had no say in choosing. Think of all you’ve gained in your life without their contributions. Or maybe because of the examples they set for you and they don’t even realise.

Labor and Liberal have to go. It's time for a new government. Nobody could do any worse if they tried. The average person on the street could do a better job than these dickheads.
Labor pollies have no real life experience and should never be in power!

Yes, a BIG prison in the middle of nowhere. No communication with the outside world, no contact with other inmates, brick walls separating each one-person cell, no windows, and three BASIC meals a day. Maybe then these morons will take notice and change their ways. I know it sounds harsh but sometimes it has to be that way.

My eldest grandson is in prison, but his brain is so fried from meth that I doubt if he’d know if prison is a “retreat” or punishment. 😞

My nephew is a member of a bike gang. He has been shot twice . Pushed of a third floor balcony causing head damage he was lucky to survive that. I don't even know why he is in this time. My eldest son is the only one who will visit him.
My brother hasn't seen him for years .
Funny thing is this time he is in the same prison as my father but he is in higher security. Lucky though as my nephew would also be in for murder if he got his hands on his grandfather.

I'm pretty sure if jail time was more harder he wouldn't get into as much trouble .

I think by making things harder in prison will stop them re offending

The sad thing is they can still get drugs in prison but not nice what they have to do to get them. How old is your grandson
He’s 23. So sad to reflect on what a sweet and loving and thoughtful person he once was. I’ve only visited him once (it’s about a 5hour drive from where I live), but he got angry for some reason and said I’d better go before he got really enraged.
😢

Sometimes they don't deal with the truth and he may have been embarrassed by what he did and where he was

I don’t know if he even has the ability to be embarrassed anymore. He’s been an angry young man for about the past 7 years. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see the effects of meth and the other drugs and alcohol he’s abused. 💔

I'm just wondering how many people on SDC have actually been in prison. There may be preconceptions due to mainly US movies and television shows.

Don't be fooled!
As a teenager I was in a girls home for being uncontrollable and rebellious. Geez even when police drove past I would call out then stick my finger up.
But I woke up and became tamed.

But my nephew is and has been in jail for you name it, drugs, assault, armed robbery . My father is in jail because he us a paedophile, we hoped he rotted in jail but gets out in 2 years . My brother has been in many jails including an American one in south Australia. My sister has been in jail many times including Silverwater .

Nice family I have hey!!! Oh and they all have tattoo's and my brothers last ones are so ugly. Hope he reads this as he is on here somewhere he just won't tell me his user name. First names Bob

He was 16 when he started , so very young.
Did he have trouble at school like concentrating ect . Sometimes an underlying problem does this to them . It's like they lose all confidence and then hide behind drugs and alcohol. My brother has been drinking and doing drugs since he was 14 he is now 58

He was alright until his home life was disrupted and felt overlooked and unloved (long story), so he sought solace in drink and drugs. I can understand why he felt and still does feel that way, but he’s never taken responsibility for what he does. He needs to grow up, but I fear it’s too late for him now. He’s been given lots of help with chances to change. But his brain is so badly damaged now that I don’t think there’s any hope for him. 💔

That was pretty much my brother and sister. Never give up , I have seen pretty people do a 360 turn around
