Young Australian arrested in Indonesia after ‘drunken, violent rampage’ left locals enraged

Holidays are meant for relaxation, fun, and creating some fond memories to cherish. However, a 23-year-old from Noosa, Queensland, seems to have taken the ‘fun’ aspect of the holidays to an entirely dangerous level.

While on holiday in one of Indonesia’s most conservative islands, Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones allegedly went on a naked rampage, hitting locals who tried to stop him and injuring one of them, which led to his eventual arrest.

The man could face flogging if found guilty of his crimes.

Risby-Jones, who works as a carpenter in Noosa, claimed he had a sunstroke the day before his rampage. According to him, he felt ‘almost possessed’ during the alleged incident, which happened early Thursday morning on Simeulue Island, located within the very conservative province of Aceh off the coast of Sumatra.

Risby-Jones also shared with reporters that he was on a surfing holiday and had ‘one shot of vodka’ prior to the incident.

‘I feel like not myself like almost possessed,’ he said in an interview.

‘It was not a good feeling. I wasn’t myself. Normally I am a very nice guy,’ he continued before adding that he would ‘never want to hurt people’ and that the alleged incident was ‘very out of character’.

Risby-Jones also said that he didn’t really remember what happened, including being hit and kicked in the head, nabbed and bashed by local villagers. It was reported that this happened when he allegedly tried to steal one of the local’s motorbikes while naked.

Based on the details of the case, including testimonies from witnesses and police reports, Risby-Jones was allegedly drinking from a bottle of vodka before he emerged from his dwelling in the Moon Beach Resort without any clothes and proceeded to chase and strike people on the main village road.

Shortly after midnight, Risby-Jones attacked a fisherman from the village of Lantik, causing him to suffer an injury to the foot that required 50 stitches on his heel and a broken bone. Local Police Senior Commissioner Jamitko alleged that the man also hit a security guard before leaving the resort.

According to the police, Risby-Jones was ‘enraged’ and ‘caused a scene’.

‘He hit a security guard and walked out of the resort and ran amok with every motorbike rider he encountered.’

It was concluded that the fisherman’s injuries were a result of Risby-Jones hitting him as he passed by on his motorbike and throwing the vehicle onto the fisherman after he fell in a nearby gutter.

Enraged by the tourist’s behaviour, the locals formed a mob and tried to set the resort itself on fire.

‘Knowing it, the people got angry and almost put the resort on fire. Luckily, local police and the village head managed to calm down the mob,’ Senior Commissioner Jamitko said.

The man’s family released a statement on his behalf, claiming that Risby-Jones is now ‘fully aware of his behaviour’ and is disturbed by his actions which he takes ‘full responsibility’ for.

His father told reporters that his son was ‘deeply ashamed of the trauma and ongoing distress he has inflicted upon his family’. He also said his son was acknowledging the waste of resources his actions caused for local police and apologised to the Australian people for ‘embarrassing them’.

Simeulue Police Chief Detective Mayyuhdi said that Risby-Jones faces either two-and-a-half years in prison if the injuries he caused are minor or up to five years in prison if the victim’s injuries are more serious.

Risby-Jones also faces prosecution under Sharia Law, which is a religious law that is deeply ingrained in Islamic tradition. Under this law, drinking alcohol and other so-called morality offences such as premarital sex, adultery, and homosexuality are illegal for both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Aceh itself is one of Indonesia’s most conservative provinces where the sale and consumption of alcohol are banned. If found guilty, he will be flogged 40 times.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that the Australian Embassy in Jakarta is working to provide consular assistance.

Indonesian police said Risby-Jones would be detained for up to 20 days while investigations take place.

John McLeod, a Crisis Management Consultant, has previously worked with high-profile Australians who found themselves in similar situations in Indonesia.

Mr McLeod said that the man’s alleged behaviour would be taken as an ‘act of incredible disrespect’.

‘If what we're hearing is true, it's total disrespect for local customs and culture, and to their religious faith,’ he said before adding that the concept of ‘restorative justice’ was highly valued in Indonesia.

‘You pay compensation for the pain and suffering and damage that you've caused to the individuals and throw yourself at the mercy of the local governor for forgiveness for your behaviour. You want to be showing total and utter remorse,’ he said.

Three non-Muslim Indonesian men were given 40 strikes in Banda Aceh in 2021 for drinking alcohol in public.

I’d be offended if he did that in Australia too, sounds like he deserves whatever punishment he gets. Maybe we should adopt their punishment for young thieves who steal cars here too! Might make them think twice!

About times idiots like this grub learned that they MUST respect the culture and laws applicable to the countries they visit. Indonesia, bing the most populous Muslim country on earth may have laws and cultures foreign to Australia however, if you want to visit these countries you must understand that you have a oral and legal responsibility to accept their way of life and that the punishments while foreign to Australia are very severe. And for this embarassment to Australia

Another example of a real D*** Head thinking that they are above the law. About time people who wish to travel to another country must understand that their moral, cultural, religous and legal laws are significantly different to Australia's laws and that to ignore these laws will lead to significant punishments from a legal system which applies their laws according to the countries laws and which are vastly different to the legal system in Australia which is ruled by limp wristed magistrates to scared to impose sentances which fit the crime. This embarassment to Australia must be made to accept the punishment as imposed by the Indonesian authorities and made to financially compensat his victims and held in an Indonesian correctional facilititate until he has made such compensation plus all costs incurred by the Australian consulate. There is no doubt that his alleged brain was out of focus trying to explain away his idiotic acts if one reads of his pathetic excuse.

excuses, excuses. one shot of vodka, running naked, causing hospital treatment to another person. come on. As far as i am concerned he deserves what he gets. Why is it Aussie men still do not get it when they go to Bali? Are they all dumb!!

If he did it in Australia he might get a $50.00 fine and reprimanded. Its time that punishment for crime was increased and became realistic in Australia.
$50:00 fine and reprimanded?, The pathetic magistrates running our courts would probably accept his BS excuses which in all probability would include having been abused in his youth by the local youth group and award him a $5000 package to make up for the time he was kept away from his local dole office plus reprimand the local police for spoiling his fun night out.

He should get all the punishment he deserves. Australians are known for their bad behaviour in Bali / Indonesia.

"When in Rome...'. It is trite to say that a visitor to a foreign country is required to comply with the country's law in much the same way as are the residents. What this young man did would be looked upon as an act of simple yahooing in Byron Bay, Port Douglas or similar. Not so Aceh. It is widely known as a conservative Muslim state which enforces local laws driven by people of Islamic faith. The conduct of the man is gravely offensive to the local residents. He will have to face up to the prescribed punishments.
As you say it would be classed as simple yahooing here in Australia
What does that say about us?
Our laws are so pathetically weak, that is why we are raising (if you can call it that) a generation of bogan ferals.
My apologies to you decent kids out there.

A very big percentage of them are and not just the men. I have seen very disgusting drunken behaviour by young girls over there.
If you can't hold your liquor,
don't drink.

Only 40, increase it to 50. He's the sort that give us bad names OS. Yes, I know he regrets it now, wonder if it's the punishment though?

Funny, I was in Bali last month. It was very humid and I was suffering from dehydration but I didn't feel any urge to tear naked thru the streets attacking people, guess I hadn't had enough to drink.

  • The rampage incited anger among locals, who allegedly threatened to burn down a hotel in response.

Self-entitled persons, soon discover when they DISSRECPECT other cultures, that LAWS, especially culturally sensitive laws, are strictly meant for obeying.

Hopefully once his punishment is over, his experience is enough, to warn other self-entitled youngsters from doing the same, lest they suffer worse.

Somehow even going to jail overnight for misbehavior is seen as some sort of going to the naughty corner, rite of passage these days.

American society is crumbling, with disrespect and we're now following their model.

In Coles, Woolworths, Kmart etc They consistently sell t-shirts with USA and every American state. I know we can even purchase gang t-shirts, like bloods and crypts etc, because Australian kids with their USA cap hats on backwards, walk around and wear them.

Try to purchase anything that says Aus or Australia or anything with an Australian state or even a Kangaroo on it however and we cannot go to our major brands. know, we need to go to a tourist shop or search online an order one, does this seem right?

I have complained to them for years about this non-appreciation of our own culture, as it is where disrespect for another cultures, tends to come from.

t is our retail industry that influences our society who pays very little if any attention, to assisting people of our own nation to both appreciate our respect ours.

This is my opinion anyway..

He is a 23 yr old guy , should have more sensible and wiser not to do what he did in a foreign country . Of course , now he feels sorry after he got caught. He needs to be punished accordingly .
Maybe Australia should have stricter rules as well Regarding alcohol consuming , steeling cars from people who worked hard to buy maybe a bit of luxury. The punishment to the youth is just a slab on the wrist .
Like yesterday 3 ladies died in Maryborough Qld , due to a school kid steeling a luxury car and crashed into them . I lived in that area for 5 yrs and walked On that particular spot many times , it just makes me sick.
I have travelled to countries like China and Russia , you just follow the rules of the country and always felt save .
I personally would not go to Indonesia, mainly due to the bomming in Bali , where many Australians died .

Oh I heard of this... really a tragic story! I think there's a fourth one in critical condition. I pray she makes it. My heart also goes out to the families of the three.

WHY do young people think that they can go to Country and trash it like they are at home or above their Laws. Do the Crime Pay the Penalty. I have been to a lot of Countries I don't agree with a lot of the Laws, BUT I follow them, Muslim Country, I cover up, it also comes down to respect for others as well. Thailand, Bali, why go, it is not the safest place to be, and also they don't exactly like Australians anyway so WHY give your Cash to them.

The Bali bombings were an atrocity, but we cannot hold the entire Balinese population responsible.
These bombers came from Java, the Balinese people are Hindu and a very gentle, respectful people. They are dependant on tourism for their livelihood. Can you say that about the Russians and Chinese and yet you say you travelled there.

10 years imprisonment and 40 lashes every week its not Australia where there are no consequences for breaking the law or jail time due to the soft cock approach to crime here

Anyone going to Indonesia is told don't do this , that etc or you'll be jailed. Typical young entitled fella that thinks hes above any law, probably plays footie and learnt no rules there

Yes - there is no excuse for this type of loutish behaviour. However, I do not agree with this type of punishment - it is primitive and not appropriate in today's world
