Woolworths just made grocery shopping a whole lot easier and more eco-friendly with their new service

We all know that one of the best things about grocery shopping is coming home with a week or two's worth of food (or more, depending on how big your household is!) neatly packed in bags.

However, most bags end up in landfill – and there are already so many things clogging up our landfills as it is. That's why we're glad to see that some supermarkets are starting to make an effort to be more sustainable by introducing more reusable options for their customers.

Several sources have reported that a Woolworths store at Bondi Metro in Sydney has begun providing boxes for shoppers to use while packing their items as opposed to bags. This has also been spotted at Woolworths Crows Nest, Sydney.

The new option is the latest addition to the store's initiative to provide customers with eco-friendly alternatives to packing their groceries. It should be noted that the store previously introduced the option of taking or leaving shopping bags.

The move has been applauded by many customers, particularly those who are environmentally conscious and would prefer not to use plastic bags if possible.

It's also great news for people who forget their reusable bags at home – no more having to buy disposable ones (at 20 cents apiece!) when you reach the supermarket checkout. Now you can just grab a box instead and be on your way.

One shopper, who took to TikTok to rave about the eco-friendly initiatives, said: 'Guess what Woolies has done now? An entire station where you can take a bag or you can leave a bag.'

She also commended the box option, saying that it was 'so good' that her local Woolies is now providing this service.

Another customer added: 'About bloody time boxes were brought back!'

A spokesperson for Woolworths confirmed that the initiative started as a way for customers to leave their unused bags for others to use – something that's especially useful in an area like Bondi Metro which is frequented by many tourists throughout the year.

The representative also discussed the possibility of rolling out the initiative to other stores, especially with the amount of positive feedback they're receiving from customers.

'The store has also now added boxes to carry groceries too, something we’re open to exploring further in other locations after seeing great feedback from local shoppers like this,' they remarked.

Key Takeaways

  • A Woolworths customer has shared news of an exciting new initiative at her local store - boxes for customers to use when packing their groceries, instead of bags.
  • The boxes are available in a section that also allows customers to take a shopping bag if they have left theirs at home.
  • A Woolworths spokesperson said the supermarket is open to expanding the initiative to other stores.

We're glad that many businesses are taking the initiative to reduce their plastic waste.

So why should we support businesses implementing eco-friendly options? Not only will you be reducing the amount of plastic that goes into our landfills and oceans, but you'll also be setting a good example for other businesses.

What are your thoughts, folks? Do you think other stores should adopt a similar initiative? Have you spotted this at your local store?

So what? Back to 1970.

It's amazing how many uses boxes have, when you've got some.
My Woolies told me ages ago that it's more cost effective for shelf stackers to collapse the boxes as they go, that's why they disappeared from the front for customers to collect.
They said by not collapsing them at the point of unloading, they had to get them back to the storeroom first, then store them, taking up limited space and extra time.
I couldn't understand why they didn't supply even a small number for customers to reuse.

Yea, let's march to the future by reviving the past!! About time, I could never understand why the supermarkets would pay for their rubbish to be taken away when they could get their customers to do it for free!! Win, win. :)
I was under the impression that the flatend, bundled and strapped Cardboard was sold. Maybe not.
