Woolworths deli counter rant sparks heated debate—whose side are you on?

In this fast-paced world, convenience reigns supreme, and nowhere is this more evident than in the aisles of supermarkets.

As the demand for convenience continues to shape the retail landscape, supermarkets find themselves navigating a delicate balance between meeting the needs of their customers and maintaining a competitive edge in the ever-evolving market.

However, a controversial decision by Woolworths from a couple of years ago reignited a debate among shoppers after a disgruntled customer’s social media post.



The decision by Woolworths to close its deli counters earlier than the store's closing hours began in 2022.

The customer's post criticised the supermarket giant's decision to close its deli, meat, and seafood departments at either 7 pm or 8 pm, regardless of the store's trading times.

The customer described the decision as frustrating and questioned the logic behind it.

'Whose s***id idea was it to close service delis before the shop closes?' the shopper asked.

'I can’t be alone in saying how frustrating it is to call in after work to get a few things, including sliced meats, to find the entire deli department is closed.'

The customer suggested a more customer-friendly solution could be to have a button or bell to push where another team member can come [and] serve.

The post quickly gained traction, with many social media users chiming in with their own opinions, sparking a heated debate.



While some agreed with the shopper's complaint, others defended Woolworths.

‘They won’t put the staff on, so they need time to pack up and clock off with the little staff they have. And you need to be deli trained to work there; not everyone is,’ one said.

‘They have to clean the slicers/machinery. Not all businesses operate like that. Our local closes the deli one hour prior to store closure so that the staff can leave on time,’ another replied.

‘I don’t have a problem with it because I understand they have families, too, that they want to get home to.’



The debate took a personal turn when the original poster fired back.

‘That has nothing to do with it! So you’re saying that the checkout staff, fruit and veg people and everyone else that works till 9 pm when the shop closes to the public don’t need to go home to their families?’

‘The equipment is cleaned while the deli is open, always has been. Back in the day before Sunday trading, it used to get a full clean [on] Saturdays after close, but now they clean everything while trading,’ the shopper explained.

‘My complaint is [that] the whole thing was closed.’

However, this viewpoint was met with resistance, with social media users arguing that cleaning the deli and equipment takes hours, hence the need for early closure.

The customer remained adamant, arguing that there was no excuse for closing a section of the shop early.



When Woolworths decided on this move in 2022, a spokesperson stated that the changes were made after careful consideration of customer shopping behaviour.

‘Customers can still purchase similar products, such as chicken breast fillets and salmon, within our packed Fresh Convenience range located in-store.’

'We’ve also moved to standardise our overall operating hours so we can offer a consistent customer experience across our store network,' the spokesperson added.

‘Select stores across the country will open one hour later or close one hour earlier to align with other stores and better match customer shopping patterns.’ You can read more on this story here.

This is not the first time that Woolworths has been in hot waters due to a controversial decision on its deli counters.

Just last year, a customer also complained about Woolworths replacing its service counter with a ‘Deli Express’ section in some of their Queensland stores where popular meat and smallgoods products were sold in pre-packaged plastic packs instead of by specific weight. The response about cleaning the equipment and putting the food away earlier to allow normal knock off time seems perfectly reasonable to me. People are aware of it and should make alternate arrangements if they cannot make it there on time. People today expect so much from people in other jobs but forget to realise they are employees with lives and feelings too.
 
Haha omg this poor misguided time poor shopper! Staff have to be trained to work in deli to start with, secondly it takes at least an hour to fully clean the deli after trading, so I'm pretty this shopper where ever he works would be happy to stay at his job an extra to gain insight without pay?? Hmmm doubt it very much, makes wonder if he is as time poor in his job??

Why would the deli staff be expected to stay on to clean without being paid? I’m sure when they are rostered on their hours for the shift would include the time to clean after store close. So if they don’t want to work, say 6pm - 10pm, finishing after store close, then don’t take the shift or work in deli. Transfer to another position in the store. However if the person complaining shops at this particular store frequently at this time they should be used to that store’s hours and make other arrangements.

Ha! Let's go back to trading Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9 to 12 (or was it 1?) and absolutely nothing open on Sundays (including entertainment and petrol stations). Oh I forgot no late night Thursdays either. That's when families were families. Dad would knock-off at 5, travel home and dinner was always on the table at 6, to be eaten together with conversations, not electronics, not even the TV on in the background.

And everyone managed very well with this arrangement didn’t they ? BUT with the population explosion nowadays it wouldn’t work sadly
 
Also, people forget that the deli, meat & bakery area's all start way before the shop opens to make sure everything is ready for the day ahead. Also, these shops have the same/similar range of stuff in their cooling fridges & freezers. Plan & simple if the Deli/Meat/Bakery is close look at the prepacked areas.
 
I think that work hours used to be 9-5
If you start later and work later, then go before work. Wanting the deli open till 9 is really absurd, surly 7 or 8 is still good enough. Also do what everybody else does, and buy the deli meat that is already packaged. All this for probably $5.00 of meat, to keep staff on, pay wages, insurance ect. Learn to adapt, and stop sooking because the world doesn't go your way.
 
So the person shopping late must have a job where they leave late otherwise why? Why don’t they just order free to boot and they will have their deli meats waiting for them when they come late. Everything has a solution - just don’t sweat the small stuff
 
I gave up buying from the deli at my local Coles due to the rudest person they have behind the counter. Even a letter written to the Manager (never got a response btw) telling her how rude she was to customers and to have a look at the Facebook page and see complaints from others.
 
Having worked in a Deli, I can tell you there is much more to do than just cleaning the slicing machine.
The slicer should be already cleaned after each type of meat has been sliced (cross contamination).
All the glass display cabinets need to be emptied and stock labelled and packed away into the cool room.
The display cabinet has to be cleaned and sanitized. All the glass and benches cleaned and sanitized. The floor has to be cleaned. All those cleaning tasks need to be recorded and signed off.
If someone was staying after store closing, there would be shift penalties and staff security issues as well.
 
And they keep saying they offer excellent customer service.
Woolworth is the NO SERVICE STORE.

Just goes to show there will always be someone to complain about anything. im sure woolies want your money and dont want to close ever But to run a business like that certain health rules dictate some prudence and judgement required from management ...if you dont like that ...shop elsewhere..ou cant EVER please everyone . find a real problem to whinge about
 
Woolworths should definitely keep the deli open closer to closing time It’s ridiculous to say deli staff want to go home to spend time with their families. I’m sure everyone else wants to do the same thing so perhaps not even open the store The deli staff will work a little more as they will get paid a little more
 
Spoke to deli staff. It is the hardest part of the store to staff - no one wants the job. Cannot blame them, no one else has to deal with the continual cleaning and working the ovens. Looks like the complainers can go to Coles -
