Which is Australia's Top Supermarket for 2023? ALDI, Coles, IGA or Woolworths? The result might surprise you!

ALDI has been named Australia's favourite supermarket for the sixth year in a row, according to Canstar's Supermarket Satisfaction Awards.

As the cost of living continues to rise, the German-owned discount chain has impressed Aussies with a combination of value-for-money, deals, specials, freshness and quality, giving ALDI a five-star rating from consumers in almost all categories.

'ALDI has won a spot in the hearts and back pockets of Aussie shoppers through one simple and consistent commitment: high-quality products at competitively low prices,' Mr Padovani-Ginies, ALDI Australia Group Director, said.

That commitment resonated with its shoppers. ALDI received a five-star rating from shoppers for 'layout and presentation of store’–so did Woolies. IGA was the only supermarket to receive five stars for customer service, while Coles did not receive a five-star rating in any of the categories.

Canstar's Christine Seib said value for money remains a priority for Aussie families who deserve great value for their groceries.

'In an environment where higher costs of living are putting pressure on households' budgets, ALDI's combination of value, specials, freshness and quality is hard to beat,' Ms Seib said.

Since Canstar’s Supermarket Satisfaction Ratings began in 2011, ALDI has taken top honours 11 times–an extremely impressive feat!

Other Factors Contributing to ALDI's Popularity in Australia

One of the key factors contributing to ALDI's popularity and continued growth in Australia is its famous 'Special Buys', a range of discounted items available in store twice a week. These goods–which cover various categories, including kitchenware, electronics, clothing and even larger items like furniture–change every week and add an exciting 'treasure hunt' feel to every shopping trip. The anticipation of what will be featured next has become a talking point among customers, fostering a unique shopping experience that has become part of ALDI's charm.

ALDI has also maintained a commitment to simplicity. Their stores frequently display fewer products than their competitors, which they believe helps to uncomplicate the shopping experience for consumers. Undoubtedly, this lean and efficient approach is part of why ALDI can keep their prices competitive.

Add to this ALDI’s steadfast commitment to locally sourced Australian products. Over 90% of ALDI’s Fresh Produce section is filled with Aussie-grown fruit and veggies. As a result, Aussie consumers find good value at ALDI and feel good about supporting local farmers and businesses.

These factors, combined with ALDI's range of unique products, have proven to be a winning formula for the supermarket chain on Australian shores.

Don’t love all Aldi products but they are definitely cheaper. I don’t buy any groceries from China anywhere! Aldi is my first go to before the others. Coles and Woolworths make huge profits. If they kept their prices lower more people would shop there, win win!
Have you checked the size of there products, I went to buy 9 grain bickys for my Hubby and the were a lot smaller. There price are not cheaper anymore.

Whatever gives you the idea that the products sold by Aldi are produced in China?

All you need to do is look on the labels and it will tell you where they come from. A lot of them are made in Europe for obvious reasons, Europe is their biggest market with a population greater than the USA! Do you imagine Aldi would have survived for 110 years in the European market if what they sell is inferior?

Every time I visit Europe, my first stop is the nearest Aldi store.

Used to be cheaper not anymore
It is still cheaper than Woollies or Coles by a mile. That is why I shop there for a fortnight's groceries on pension day when I am not frightened there will not be enough money left in my bank. As we used to spend $200.00 a week at Woollies, I can get all my fresh food, plus up to 16 meat meals for 2, plus 8 loaves of bread for under $300.00 a fortnight. the only things we buy from Woollies now are my Tena pads,( Aldi has a limited range of this commodity). Plus my special Norco milk & shaved salami. I don't like thick slices of salami as I am very fussy.

I bought a lot of rubbish from Aldi, one of them being an office chair that was I couldn't return to them die to serious health issues. It's in my garage until can get rid of it one way or another.

I also won't forget how much they charged me for using my credit, or indeed even my debit, card.
Don’t buy rubbish things there then ! I pay cash at Aldi , no charge to that .
You just have to think where and how you go shopping . I would not buy an office chair there , you have other shops for that and have more than one to pick from and can try it in the shop . Just use common sense (y) :).

Always shop at Aldi when possible. Now waiting for their baked beans and spaghetti to go up in price. How do I know? The shelves were empty. When restocked the prices increase. Not that we eat them, just check where the next increase will be.
Don’t mention it , you might give them some ideas!

Aldi first , if they do not have it I shop somewhere else , often IGA has got good sales as well .

Many of the Special Buys at Aldi are now more expensive than elsewhere, in some cases I've seen, double. Occasionally there will be a true bargain. I think in the beginning everything was a bargain, and we're now brainwashed that this is still true. It's not.
Having said that, the foods are high quality, the frozen section is around 40% lower than Coles and Woollies and better. Sadly, there are no Aldi stores in Tasmania.
So what specials are dearer? Have not noticed any!

Aldi do not give any Rewards if you shop there like Coles & Woolworths and there prices are Not Cheap any more and they do not have what I buy the Most SO I will stick to Coles & Woolies
Their prices ARE CHEAPER on most things!!!!

Yes they are cheap, but try and talk to them when a favorite product disapears. There is NO PHONE NUMBER. They do not want to speak to their customers. How rude

I saw handbag identical to one I'd bought elsewhere for $20. Aldi had it for $40. That's one instance, there are many more, that I see when I'm there. It pays to compare and not blindly assume they are cheaper.

I,ve been a longtime ALDI shopper but for sometime now i see there has been price creep . eg strawberries , 2.50 everywhere 2.49 at aldi . the electronic price labels make it easy to change prices once they check other s/market pricing then increase prices . notice how many products are 1c cheaper .

I have 3 Aldi stores near me up to 12 minutes away. They are all tiny stores and the fruit and veg is not in best condition at all. I compared prices there, went into Drakes Foodland, Coles and Woolies as I have so many supermarkets near me it's not funny. And really to get best price you have to go them all. Where one seems cheaper the next item is dearer. There is little selection for alternatives in Aldi, where people have allergies and intolerances especially for staples so have to go elsewhere anyway. Not all stores of each company sell all products either,. It is luck to get discounts, it is luck to get really get good quality, it is luck to have goods even on the shelves for the same company. I don't want to have to run around from store to store to get a lower price on something as time and petrol adds to that lower price- so they work out similar in the end.

Only plenty of Aldi’s in SE Qld , but if you go any further north of Bundaberg/ Gladstone as far as I know there are no Aldi stores .

5 star for customer service for IGA is understandable, the staff are great at my local store in Hamilton Victoria.

I've probably got more commsense than you think, and even more than a lot of pretentious people ou there.

May I just add that I don't suffer fools gladly either?

That's why I haven't set foot inside your favourite German supermarket recently, nor do I intend to do so, full stop.

Don't bother replying! End of the story. Over and out, as they say!
