Donald Trump’s latest health claim has triggered a sharp rebuke from Australian experts, who insist that paracetamol is safe for use during pregnancy.

The former U.S. president suggested the common pain reliever could increase the risk of autism, a claim medical professionals say is misleading and unsupported by science.

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has moved quickly to reassure the public, confirming there are ‘no current active safety investigations’ into any link between paracetamol and autism.

Trump’s comments spark alarm

On Tuesday, Trump urged pregnant women to ‘strongly’ limit their paracetamol use unless they had an ‘extremely high fever’ they could not ‘tough out.’

Professor Andrew Whitehouse, a leading autism researcher at the Kids Research Institute Australia, called the claim a ‘misuse of science’ and ‘complete misunderstanding.’

'At best, Trump's claim is a misreading of the available research.'

Professor Andrew Whitehouse

What the science actually shows

Professor Whitehouse explained that while some studies have found associations between paracetamol use during pregnancy and autism, others found no effect—or even the opposite.

‘Really importantly, though, what none of these studies have shown is a causal link that paracetamol taken during pregnancy causes autism, and that's why I say it could be a potential misuse of science,’ he said.

He added that autism is ‘a really complex, genetically based condition,’ noting: ‘We know that genetics is likely the cause in the vast majority of cases of autism, and there are dozens, if not hundreds, of genes that are likely to contribute to that.’

Paracetamol in Australia

Known as acetaminophen in the U.S. (e.g., Tylenol)

Common Australian brands: Panadol, Herron, Chemist’s Own

Listed as ‘Category A’ in pregnancy—considered safe when used as directed

The TGA and expert warnings

The TGA reiterated that ‘the use of medications in pregnancy is subject to clinical, scientific and toxicological evaluation at the time of registration of a medicine in Australia,’ adding: ‘The TGA has no current active safety investigations for paracetamol and autism, or paracetamol and neurodevelopmental disorders more broadly.’

Dr Hannah Kirk, a senior lecturer at Monash University’s Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, reinforced this position.

‘Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition with no known single cause. However, research shows that genetics play a large role, with hundreds of genes being linked to autism,’ she said.

She explained that fever itself can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes: ‘In many cases, treating a fever with acetaminophen may reduce those risks. Pregnant people should continue to follow the advice of their healthcare providers when managing pain and fever.’

What the research says

Large-scale studies have undercut Trump’s claim. Dr Kirk pointed to an analysis of 2.48 million births, which found that when comparing siblings—thereby controlling for genetic and environmental factors—any apparent link between acetaminophen use and autism disappeared.

‘Recent suggestions that Tylenol use during pregnancy could increase the risk of autism have understandably raised concern among expectant parents,’ Dr Kirk said. ‘However, no study has shown that acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, causes autism. Some studies have reported an association … while others have not. Importantly, association does not mean causation.’

Beyond paracetamol: Trump’s other claims

Trump has also promoted the cancer treatment drug leucovorin as a possible therapy for autism. Professor Whitehouse said the idea is premature and unproven. ‘[There have] been a handful of studies on a handful of children, so ... the findings are not entirely believable,’ he said. He added that pushing to fast-track leucovorin for autism ‘far exceeds where the science is at, at this stage.’

Safe use of paracetamol in pregnancy

  • Follow dosage guidelines carefully

  • Consult a doctor before prolonged use

  • Use to manage fever or significant pain when needed

  • Remember: Category A medicine in Australia, considered safe

What This Means For You

Medical experts stress that paracetamol remains a safe and important tool for managing pain and fever during pregnancy. Autism, they say, is a complex condition with strong genetic roots—not the result of a single medication. The TGA continues to classify paracetamol as safe, and expectant parents are urged to rely on the advice of their healthcare providers, not political statements.

Same as all gods in all religions that worship a god.
I thought Good Enough or some of the others throwing abuse and insults at me must think they were God. Certainly confident of being all-knowing, including able to read my mind from possibly hundreds of miles away and knowing the intricate details of all my friends' health conditions, despite not even knowing their names.

Why do you keep bringing up the same topics over and over again? Why do you try to convince others that your opinion is the only right one?

Your neurotic posts should be a sign for you to get psychiatric help. There’s no shame in it. Read over your excessive posts and you’ll see. Very repetitive and hypocritical.

I pity you.
No pity needed. I am far healthier mentally than the deluded nut cases here who think they know what I think and think they know more about my friends and associates (whose names they don't even know) than I do - not to mention thinking they are experts in medical science.

After that long repetitive rant can you imagine what his book on corruption was like. I thought he wasn't going to converse with us any more,??
Obviously he has no insight into how deluded he sounds. Everybody he knows is either dead or dying from COVID shots , one Dr quit because of it
another one warned him not to have it, millions of people all over the world are dying from it.
How did we all get to be so lucky.
Very sad really

Nobody's imagining about your friends.
They are all either dead or dying. Having miscarriages and stillbirths, some have turbo cancers. You told us all. Did I miss anything??

Yes, the deaths and the lies are tragic. But no, 'everyone' I know isn't dead or dying from the shots. Many of my friends didn't even take them, and according to a nurse who headed the Covid unit, a third of the shots were actually saline. That's been confirmed by many others who handled the vaccines as well, but of course you will KNOW ABSOLUTELY that it isn't true, because you know everything. I don't know how many are dead or dying from the jab. Nobody does, because hospitals in the US (and probably elsewhere) were paid to list deaths as 'Covid related' regardless of the actual cause. And plenty of doctors are either too scared or too confused to attribute deaths to the jab. But if you check FACTS instead of THINKING you know everything, you will discover that many doctors left the profession in protest against a campaign of bullying. And many brave doctors warned patients that it could be harmful, despite being threatened with de-registration for doing so. An award-winning doctor conducted extensive research that showed a disturbing link between childhood vaccines and autism. (Of course you will brand her a nut job, because you KNOW everything!) Now, I wonder, why would those in power feel the need to threaten doctors if they were actually telling the truth about a vaccine being life-saving? Makes no sense to me. The truth never fears questions. Only liars and deluded fools get upset when challenged.

Funny. Goodenough claimed to know the causes of their health problems or deaths. And no, they are not ALL anything. Maybe you should learn to read.

You’ve been challenged and appear to be upset in many, if not most of your posts. What are you telling us?

So why isn't the TGA answering key questions and evidencing how it determined the jab was safe? And where do you get those fake figures from? Because they are certainly fake. In my small circle of acquaintances, a chronic heart condition certain to lead to premature death, a stillborn, a death from a blood clot, a miscarriage, several premature deaths from various organ failures, and multiple instances of turbo-cancer have all been determined to be due to the jab. Not one of my circle who weren't jabbed had more than a super-mild case of Covid, but all who were jabbed had very severe cases and at least half have ongoing chronic health problems they never had before the jab. My own doctor left general practice in protest against the lies about the jab being safe and her replacement told us not to have the jab because it was unsafe, but said to keep quiet because he'd be fired if anyone knew that. Clearly, the conspiracy was the opposite lot to those you accuse, because only in a conspiracy are experts forced into silence when they have grave concerns about public health. Science encourages debate. Religion silences it. The Covid story was religion.

Common sense told many of us the claims about such a new vaccine could not possibly be true, as there had not been time to test it properly. The research now is actually evidencing the jab caused serious adverse effects and many deaths. Instances of turbo-cancer and heart disease, particularly in the young, have gone through the roof. Sportsmen have dropped dead on sports fields. It is now widely claimed by medical experts that the jab is to blame. Even Pfizer have now admitted to hundreds of serious adverse effects. You are behind the times, sorry! Too long believing the people driving the global conspiracy.
Turbo cancer has nothing to do malignant tumours, but is a anti vaccine conspiracy theory perpetrated by witchdoctors such as Stephanie Seneff, Peter McCullough, amongst others. They "suggest" that COVID-19 vaccines cause "cancer" through immune supression. Since debunked by numerous studies.

Stephanie Seneff is nothing but a two bob computer hack with a Degree in Computing Science. Much ado about nothing medical.

The American Board of Internal Medicine had revoked McCullough's certifications for Cardiovascular Disease and Internal Medicine due to his promotion of misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.

Keep drowning your conspiratorial sledge of misinformation.
