Donald Trump’s latest health claim has triggered a sharp rebuke from Australian experts, who insist that paracetamol is safe for use during pregnancy.

The former U.S. president suggested the common pain reliever could increase the risk of autism, a claim medical professionals say is misleading and unsupported by science.

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has moved quickly to reassure the public, confirming there are ‘no current active safety investigations’ into any link between paracetamol and autism.

Trump’s comments spark alarm

On Tuesday, Trump urged pregnant women to ‘strongly’ limit their paracetamol use unless they had an ‘extremely high fever’ they could not ‘tough out.’

Professor Andrew Whitehouse, a leading autism researcher at the Kids Research Institute Australia, called the claim a ‘misuse of science’ and ‘complete misunderstanding.’

'At best, Trump's claim is a misreading of the available research.'

Professor Andrew Whitehouse

What the science actually shows

Professor Whitehouse explained that while some studies have found associations between paracetamol use during pregnancy and autism, others found no effect—or even the opposite.

‘Really importantly, though, what none of these studies have shown is a causal link that paracetamol taken during pregnancy causes autism, and that's why I say it could be a potential misuse of science,’ he said.

He added that autism is ‘a really complex, genetically based condition,’ noting: ‘We know that genetics is likely the cause in the vast majority of cases of autism, and there are dozens, if not hundreds, of genes that are likely to contribute to that.’

Paracetamol in Australia

Known as acetaminophen in the U.S. (e.g., Tylenol)

Common Australian brands: Panadol, Herron, Chemist’s Own

Listed as ‘Category A’ in pregnancy—considered safe when used as directed

The TGA and expert warnings

The TGA reiterated that ‘the use of medications in pregnancy is subject to clinical, scientific and toxicological evaluation at the time of registration of a medicine in Australia,’ adding: ‘The TGA has no current active safety investigations for paracetamol and autism, or paracetamol and neurodevelopmental disorders more broadly.’

Dr Hannah Kirk, a senior lecturer at Monash University’s Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, reinforced this position.

‘Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition with no known single cause. However, research shows that genetics play a large role, with hundreds of genes being linked to autism,’ she said.

Source: 7NEWS Australia / Youtube.

She explained that fever itself can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes: ‘In many cases, treating a fever with acetaminophen may reduce those risks. Pregnant people should continue to follow the advice of their healthcare providers when managing pain and fever.’

What the research says

Large-scale studies have undercut Trump’s claim. Dr Kirk pointed to an analysis of 2.48 million births, which found that when comparing siblings—thereby controlling for genetic and environmental factors—any apparent link between acetaminophen use and autism disappeared.

‘Recent suggestions that Tylenol use during pregnancy could increase the risk of autism have understandably raised concern among expectant parents,’ Dr Kirk said. ‘However, no study has shown that acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, causes autism. Some studies have reported an association … while others have not. Importantly, association does not mean causation.’

Beyond paracetamol: Trump’s other claims

Trump has also promoted the cancer treatment drug leucovorin as a possible therapy for autism. Professor Whitehouse said the idea is premature and unproven. ‘[There have] been a handful of studies on a handful of children, so ... the findings are not entirely believable,’ he said. He added that pushing to fast-track leucovorin for autism ‘far exceeds where the science is at, at this stage.’

Safe use of paracetamol in pregnancy

  • Follow dosage guidelines carefully

  • Consult a doctor before prolonged use

  • Use to manage fever or significant pain when needed

  • Remember: Category A medicine in Australia, considered safe

What This Means For You

Medical experts stress that paracetamol remains a safe and important tool for managing pain and fever during pregnancy. Autism, they say, is a complex condition with strong genetic roots—not the result of a single medication. The TGA continues to classify paracetamol as safe, and expectant parents are urged to rely on the advice of their healthcare providers, not political statements.

i would be very careful as to just what you poohoo on here.
something is going on with kids and parents. most parents just give a panadol or similar to their kids, and do not tell me otherwise.
now they have medication for babies, so help me.
this was not heard of in my day. if so it was a naughty child, and they were around. not too many wanted them.
what happened to a good bit of chatising, no harm there. nowadays everyone seems to want to be the kids sister not a parent.
Has anyone every thought there has to be something going into these kids?
I am with the Donald on this one. THINK!!!!!!!!!
You never heard of medication for babies in your day?

Aspirin (which isn’t recommended for under 12’s or 16’s now days), was given as the pain and fever reducing medication when I was a toddler.

Well, if you want Trump to be your hero @Jest, that’s your problem. I hope you’re not as demented as he is.

Is it painful to be so closed minded?
Trust the science in OZ ...ha ha ha. The TGA doesn't do it's job...just believes everything it is told by drug companies and doesn't look too deep...Covid shots have killed millions and still killing...easy to sit in your rocking chair...looking down your nose and making wild statements...if nothing else good for a laugh!
Honestly making wild statements. You take the cake for that.
Over 9 billion COVID shots were given globally after which 55 deaths occurred, 17 of these only having a casual rellationship to the COVID shots.
There is no PROOF that COVID shots are still killing people or that millions of people died from it.
Only the ravings of conspiracy theorists like you. You are the ones making wild statements. The TGA doesn't do it's job?? How would you know?? Do you have a scientific or medical degree.

Is it painful to be so closed minded?? You should know?? I wonder if you even have a mind . When brains were being given out, did you think they said trains and decided to wait for the next one.

There's plenty of research out there, you just don't want to know. Too long down the rabbit hole.

So that is what happened to baby Donald - his mum took paracetamol when she was pregnant - and he turned out a brighter shade of orange as well!!! What a crock of s===t!
Actually, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, Donnie Boy's mummy, was addicted to mercurochrome for over 50 years.

That explains a lot.... :ROFLMAO:

Dear member Mylittletibbies, thankyou for your post. I agree with you absolutely. This man who has pushed his way into becoming president for the second time, is sitting in his high chair and knows nothing more than to dig his claws into the finances that are at his disposal. He is not human, be is a greedy alien in disguise. For this man, the value of money comes before human life. Have a beautiful evening. 🙏🦋
yes, and I think there are a few more alien types in his ranks!!

what a stupid comment on someone you do not even know. He runs the bloody USA fool.
Yes, running the USA into the ground is what he is doing, and nearly every other Economy with his ridiculous Tariffs. Fool.

Precisely. And until the cause is positively identified, we can't reliably claim that someone suggesting a possible link is wrong. I can't see how it can be genetic, because the rates are skyrocketing and there seems to be a correlation with increased reliance of medications and vaccines. Science can't provide answers, and if it isn't questioned, it isn't science. So let's not condemn someone for suggesting possibilities.
I'll condemn anyone for being completely unscientific about it and ignoring better research.

Rates ARE NOT skyrocketing!

Obviously she is. It beggars belief that anyone can see and hear the things he does and think that is OK.

So witch doctory, voodoo and a liberal application of snake oil will cure autism and its variants?

Medical science is based on observation, evidence, analysis and methodology.

Alternative "medicine" is based on the premise of "I think, therefore I'm right". Just like the delusional Donnie Boy!

You’re not wrong there, @mylittletibbies!
Yes, when I was young it was bex powders and vincent powders, my mother would give us just a small dose of mainly bex. The worm treatment was a dose of argarol at night and a good drink of beer in the morning. (Seriously I`m nearly rolling around with laughter, this is how it was very often done) at least she was having a go I suppose.

Some of the stuff he comes out with really makes you scratch your head. I’d rather listen to proper doctors with experience instead of random statements made without proof.

Trump is not “just repeating expert advice” — he’s selectively amplifying fringe or misinterpreted studies and presenting inconclusive research as settled science.

So what's new?
Albo, Bobo et al do it all the time.

So why isn't the TGA answering key questions and evidencing how it determined the jab was safe? And where do you get those fake figures from? Because they are certainly fake. In my small circle of acquaintances, a chronic heart condition certain to lead to premature death, a stillborn, a death from a blood clot, a miscarriage, several premature deaths from various organ failures, and multiple instances of turbo-cancer have all been determined to be due to the jab. Not one of my circle who weren't jabbed had more than a super-mild case of Covid, but all who were jabbed had very severe cases and at least half have ongoing chronic health problems they never had before the jab. My own doctor left general practice in protest against the lies about the jab being safe and her replacement told us not to have the jab because it was unsafe, but said to keep quiet because he'd be fired if anyone knew that. Clearly, the conspiracy was the opposite lot to those you accuse, because only in a conspiracy are experts forced into silence when they have grave concerns about public health. Science encourages debate. Religion silences it. The Covid story was religion.

Common sense told many of us the claims about such a new vaccine could not possibly be true, as there had not been time to test it properly. The research now is actually evidencing the jab caused serious adverse effects and many deaths. Instances of turbo-cancer and heart disease, particularly in the young, have gone through the roof. Sportsmen have dropped dead on sports fields. It is now widely claimed by medical experts that the jab is to blame. Even Pfizer have now admitted to hundreds of serious adverse effects. You are behind the times, sorry! Too long believing the people driving the global conspiracy.

That would be the 'proper doctors with experience' who were too scared to speak out against a vaccine that we now know was neither safe nor effective, because they were threatened with loss of their license to practice if they disagreed with the global masters?

So why IS the instance of autism and ADHD increasing so rapidly?

"Professor Whitehouse explained that while some studies have found associations between paracetamol use during pregnancy and autism, others found no effect—or even the opposite."

So 'some studies' show it's just possible Trump might be right. Just as 'some studies' showed the Covid jab was not safe and effective, and that was ultimately proved to be the case - despite vehement public declarations and brutal torment of anyone who spoke out against it.

Some studies have also shown childhood vaccines may cause autism. Certainly the incidence of autism in the community has increased very much in line with the astonishing increase in childhood vaccines. (It really boggles the mind that babies could be born so hideously unhealthy that they need so many vaccinations before their second birthday! And really you have to wonder about the logic of giving some of those vaccines.)

Where profit is involved, there will be lies and false assurances. If there is even a remote chance that using something in pregnancy MIGHT add to the risk of autism - or any other chronic health problem - pregnant women should be warned and would be wise to avoid it. Why do we need proof? Shouldn't the mantra be 'Eliminate even the smallest risks if we can'?

We know that Big Pharma is profit-driven. We know the Big Pharma is super-powerful. We know that people in high places - including those tasked with verifying drugs are safe - can sometimes be bought off. So why would we ASSume that Trump's caution is irresponsible or wrong. I would prefer to see people in authority offering cautions. Until they stop the rapid increase in incidences of autism and ADHD, I can't accept that anyone knows for sure what is causing it.

People have, all throughout history, died from all the things you mentioned. Miscarriages. Stillbirths. etc etc. Your small group of friends all had these experiences. What a load of hogwash.I
I've had 5 jabs. No ill effects, never had COVID.
Tell me where you are getting this information from. "The Conspiracy Theorists Book of Deluded Information ".
You are so far down the rabbit hole you'll never find your way out.
I suppose you believe Tylenol also causes autism.
I imagine you're one of those that stated that Shane Warne died because of the jab. Nothing to do with his lifestyle of smoking and heavy drinking.
Do you not have anything better to do in your life??

The vaccine was NOT "new"! It was simply further development in area area where decades of work had already been done.

I don't believe your cliam that your
"doctor left general practice in protest against the lies about the jab being safe and her replacement told us not to have the jab because it was unsafe". That's simply ridiculous. And your stories of people becoming sick or dying after the jab sound like lies too. Provide proof if you have it, and remember that correlation doesn't mean causation. Do you even know what that means.
