Disgusting, they are just stealing space from other passengers. Brickbats to them, the last time I flew, the hostess called out a bag in someones carry on space for 10 mins and had to threaten to put it off the plane before the owner, who was way down the back of the plane, came forward and admitted to ownership of it. With these days of terrorist activity, all carry on spaces should be allocated to the seat holders only.

I agree with you on the issue of body weight. In the first place everyone of us should be weighed prior to being issued a boarding pass. The extra weight is adding to the allowable weight for the plane to take off, never mind the extra space occupied by these people which so often overflows into another person’s seat. Airlines should be looking into a few larger seats on all planes and allocating them to people of larger stature and weight. It is very uncomfortable, especially on longer flights, to sit next to a person overflowing their seat and those using both armrests for their comfort, especially if you are unfortunate enough to get the middle seat with one of them on each side of you!

I recall a few years ago standing in line waiting to board an airplane from Melbourne to Brisbane. This was in the days before scanning etc. The guy in front of me was wearing an army great coat and carrying a canvas bag which he kept swapping from one hand to the other. On the plane he couldn’t lift the bag to put it in the overhead locker . He took the coat off and placed it in the locker, the bag he put at his feet. I was seated beside him by the window and when I asked him what he was carrying, he opened the bag and showed me a motorcycle engine! The great coat had most of the other parts in the pockets…..

I admit that there have been occasions when I took more than one bag onto a plane.

The first occasion was way, way back in 1981 on a return trip from Europe. I had an additional item which I stored under the seat. No problem! I didn't "steal" space from another passenger!

The second occasion was another return trip from Europe, that was in 2008. I had some items that I wanted to send back to Australia but postage was horrendously expensive. So I purchased a small to mediumsized on-board bag at Frankfurt airport and placed those items plus a couple other things that I removed from my checked in luggage. Again, I didn't take any space away from another passenger.

I’m not commenting on people of large stature because there are many reasons for their size and weight - it is not about eating excessively, greed etc - but is often about genetics and hereditary factors that are unavoidable. My reference was about providing some larger seats for people of a big stature and weighing ALL passengers (as well as ALL baggage) will give a more accurate weight for pilots to balance plane, passengers and fuel intake so we can ALL fly safely.

I never really understood this before I took my first flight and read up on it online. Really a good example of small things adding up, eh?
