The Shocking Reason This Young Man's Death Could Have Been Prevented – Don't Ignore the Deadly Cost of Prescription Hikes!

In a world where we expect medical advancements to protect us, the tragic story of Cole Schmidtknecht, a 22-year-old from Appleton, Wisconsin, serves as a stark reminder of how the healthcare system can fail its patients. Cole's untimely death has sparked outrage and sorrow, highlighting the dire consequences of sudden prescription cost hikes that can turn a manageable condition into a death sentence.

Cole had been living with chronic asthma since childhood, a condition that many Australians can relate to, given that asthma affects around 2.7 million of us. For Cole, his asthma was a life-long battle, one that he had been able to keep under control with the help of a prescribed inhaler. However, on January 10, 2024, when he went to collect his prescription from a Walgreens pharmacy, he was confronted with a devastating reality: the price of his inhaler had skyrocketed from US$66 (A$106) to an exorbitant US$540 (A$872).

The reason for this price surge? A policy change by OptumRX, a pharmacy benefit manager, which led to Walgreens refusing to cover Cole's usual prescription under insurance. This left Cole in a dire situation, unable to afford the medication that he desperately needed. For five days, he struggled to breathe, relying on an emergency inhaler that was not designed for daily use.

The situation took a turn for the worse on January 15, 2024, when Cole suffered a fatal asthma attack. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was found unconscious and blue, and later pronounced dead. His family, faced with an unimaginable loss, made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support on January 21.

Now, Cole's family is seeking justice, launching a lawsuit against OptumRX, Walgreens, and Walgreens Boots Alliance for negligence and wrongful death. The lawsuit alleges that Cole was given no warning about the insurance coverage change, which is a violation of Wisconsin state law that requires a 30-day notice. Furthermore, it claims that the pharmacist failed to contact Cole's physician about alternative treatments or provide affordable options for his inhaler.

This case is not an isolated incident. It comes on the heels of a damning report revealing that UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of OptumRX, has been overcharging some cancer patients by over 1,000 percent for life-saving drugs. The Federal Trade Commission's findings have exposed a pattern of price gouging by the biggest pharmacy benefit managers, including OptumRx, Cigna's Express Scripts, and CVS Caremark Rx, which have collectively pocketed an extra US$7.3 billion (A$11.7 billion) over five years.

The story of Cole Schmidtknecht is a harrowing example of how the cost of prescription medication can have fatal consequences. It's a wake-up call for all of us to be vigilant about the medications we rely on and to advocate for fair pricing and transparency within the healthcare system.

For our senior community, this issue hits close to home. Many of us are on fixed incomes and rely on prescription medications for our well-being. It's crucial to stay informed about changes to insurance policies and to speak up if you notice a sudden increase in the cost of your medications. Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist about alternative options if the price of your prescription becomes unaffordable.

Cole's story is a tragic reminder that no one should have to choose between their health and their finances. As a community, we must support each other and push for a healthcare system that prioritises patients over profits. Let's honour Cole's memory by advocating for change and ensuring that no other family has to endure such a preventable loss.

Why on earth didn't his family get him admitted to hospital for treatment rather than let him struggle for 5 days before he had his fatal attack at home?
American hospitals aren't free like here. Only their emergency departments are. People have to pay if they are admitted to the wards. People need to have health insurance over there.

the one from Fred Trump 111 is "THE TRUMP FAMILY AND HOW WE GOT THAT WAY". This shows me that with my age and disabilities I'd have been dead long ago. Off hand, I've forgotten the name of the one by Mary Trump, Fred's sister, but if you ask at new or used book shops I'm sure you will find them. I only bought them new this year and I've passed them on to so many people I'm not sure where they ended up. I talked myself into buying them and was pleased I did. They will open your eyes. If you can't find Mary's book please let me know how to contact you and I'll chase it up. :giggle: I bought the books in Bundaberg at Dymocks

There are free clinics in most American cities for uninsured or the underprivileged, but even with them, if I can remember, at any one time they can only accommodate about 550,000 to 700,000. They also have a national helpline to find alternative sources of help.

Yes, for the very poor and homeless citizens. Did you realise many employers contribute towards employee's health insurance? There are govt. nursing homes too, however a much lower standard.
My friend's mother had to transfer to one after her mother's money ran out with a private nursing home.
My son played pro sport over there. I'm pleased he lives back here due to their gun laws.

I have a cousin and family and old army mate there so I'm sought of up on it, plus I work with a cowpoke from Iowa, the centres are also for low income public and I can compare 2 homes here that are private I wouldn't kennel my dogs at. Quite a few Aussie businesses, and not just top end ones, provide health cover as well to attract and maintain needed personnel, I received it working for Ainsworth and a hospitality company. At least we've got super, didn't kick in till halfway thrue working life but will help when I apply for it. And there gun laws are a bit of a joke , but the old saying goes people kill people not guns. Someone could break into 3 properties I know of,even though there secured properly and licensed, and get there hands on them, alarms and all. And u could kill someone with a butter knife if u had to.

Yes, been there 4 times. I know several young men who went to their rating one colleges. All 3 ended up marrying girls they met at college and stayed over there, much to their parent's dismay.
I've heard all the gun arguments there is.
The constitution - you name it.
Even their police are known to shoot first, ask questions later.

Yeah Im up on there constitution, but I reckon the founding fathers might have different ideas about the right to bare arms if they were around today. Can't really comment on there cops, I'm not in there shoes, but if u look on the internet, apart from my own feelings about wollopers, ex cops here a are dagging the hell out of their former colleagues for not being tougher and I've got to be honest I know of a few lowlifes who deserve a bullet!

In saying that I know several Americans that live here. Married to Aussies. This can happen too.
A friend's son was working in LA and the police shot his innocent flatmate without questioning because he ran away from an intruder.
Google Chris Lane shooting. He was from Victoria and was attending a college in Oklahoma. Very sad for his parents.

Will do, reminds of that Aussie lady who got shot in Minneapolis by police in 2017, she rang about an intruder as well. Gotta feel sorry for the families. The only incident I personally know of was my mate in Tennessee getting pinged for resisting arrest and drunk and disorderly, a fair while ago,he nearly got 18 months, the only thing saving him was his short amount of time in country and remorse he showed, plus good lawyer. Still had to do community service though.

Off the subject of the American health system and back to ours.

My partner and I are both on disibility pensions and two weeks ago he started to get his medications for free as he reached the threshold early this year. Previously our earliest was in May, I was shocked that he'd had so many medications in the first few months of the year. Mind you the last two lots of meds we'd picked up were over $85 each at $7.70 a script, that equals a lot of pills 😯

I like a lot of American things to many to mention, all good things, but never really wanted to go there, probably because I've been into american culture, sport, history, military, movies ,books all my life, I was going for a gridiron side before anyone here knew what it was. Grew up with a few yanks thrue the years to, plus I've seen some pretty horrific things first hand in this country as well. Scotland before America if ever.
