The Dark Secret Behind Why This Popular 80s Toy Was Banned Will Leave You Speechless!

Ah, the 1980s – a decade of neon leg warmers, big hair, and some of the most iconic toys that defined many Australian childhoods. For those of us who grew up during this era, the mere mention of certain toys can send us spiraling down memory lane, reminiscing about the simpler times when our biggest concern was whether we'd get the latest action figure or electronic game for our birthday.

But not all toys from the 80s have stood the test of time, and there's one in particular that has been erased from history for a very good reason. As we take a stroll through the nostalgic toy gallery, we come across beloved items like the Tamagotchi, teaching us early lessons in responsibility, and Hot Wheels, igniting our imaginations with high-speed races. We remember the Aqua Water Ring Game, which provided hours of frustration and fun, and the Strawberry Shortcake Dolls, with their sweet scents and adorable pets.

Care Bears taught us about the importance of caring and sharing, while the Razor Scooter offered a sense of freedom as we zoomed around the neighborhood. Mr. Potato Head brought laughter with his interchangeable parts, and Furby amazed us with its interactive capabilities. We can't forget the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Beyblades, Bratz Dolls, Polly Pocket, and the Etch A Sketch – each one a treasure in its own right.

But among these cherished playthings, there was one that has been rightfully removed from shelves and our collective memory: the Golliwog doll. With its blackface and exaggerated features, the Golliwog is a stark reminder of the harmful racial stereotypes that were once commonplace in society. Originating in the late 19th century from a children's book, the Golliwog became a popular toy in many countries, including Australia. However, as awareness of its offensive and racist connotations grew, the Golliwog began to disappear from toy stores and public consciousness.

The Golliwog's presence in the 80s toy lineup serves as a reminder of how far we've come in understanding and addressing racism. It's a testament to the progress we've made in creating a more inclusive society that rejects the casual perpetuation of stereotypes. The decision to erase this controversial item from toy galleries is not about erasing history but about acknowledging past wrongs and choosing not to glorify or perpetuate them.

As we look back on the toys of the 80s, it's important to celebrate the joy they brought to our lives while also recognizing the lessons they've taught us beyond mere play. The Golliwog's banishment from toy collections is a powerful statement about the values we hold today and our commitment to respecting all members of our community.

So, while we may hold fond memories of many 80s toys, let's also remember the importance of learning from the past. It's crucial to ensure that the toys we give to the next generation reflect the diverse and inclusive world we strive to create.

How are your daughter and new grandson going please? Hope they are getting better.
My daughter is still sick and won't speak to anyone. She has gone into a shell except she called her sister at 10pm last night asking for her and her husband to pray 🙏 that's pretty much all we are doing

Leo's lung collapsed last night and is in a critical condition.

I'm so sorry for you all, I will pray for them as well. What a miserable time for everyone. Try to take care 🙏

My mother knitted/made me a golliwog when I was a toddler. I still have him, plus a few old bought ones that are in the cupboard. Coon cheese had to change to Cheer cheese also.
We had to knit one at school, they were known as 'Golliwogs', derogatory today with this f***** up Po-shit-ical Correct-piss!

Burying and hiding history does not change history. It is history for a reason. I had a Golliwog, as did many kids my age. It did not mean we were racists. I live in Adelaide and as a child went to the Royal Adelaide show each year, and amongst other show bags would buy a "Nigger Boy" Licorice show bag. Why? Because I bloody loved licorice. Not politically correct today, but it was then. That is history. For some time in America, they have been tearing down statues that commemorate Generals that fought for The Confederacy (The South) in The American Civil War. PART of the reason for that war was slavery, but it was not the only reason. All those that fought for the South in that war were not necessarily slave owners or racists. Removing these things does not change history. I find Politicians highly offensive; can we please get rid of them??? and any statues of politicians' past.

I had a golliwog doll and honestly don't see anything wrong. It's only people who make a big deal.

I have this toy still today which I have had since I was one.

It Big Ears from Noddy n Big Ears

While we're on the subject of banning - when I was still in South Africa, Noddy and Big Ears were also banned!
For being homosexual, because they shared a bed!!!!

We all feel very helpless.

Two nurses who were looking after Leo last week were sick and he caught a cold from them.
Hubby and I had a place booked in Ulladulla and we still went but just can't get our head in it. Hubby is asleep and I'm on my phone.
We are feeling like we should be at home but my kids insisted there was nothing we can do

Mum used to buy Nigger Boy Soap Pads for about 10 cents back in the mid 1960s.

And why didn't they change "golliwog" to something as "offensive" as "gollidago" or "gollispic". Thin skinned politically correct wowsers!

Call me an "Aussie white c**t" all you like! Depending who you are, depends how I will react.

Yes my mother knitted we 3 girls a golliwog each my big sister still has mine and my little sisters. 🎅
I had a beautiful Gollywog doll until only last week when I gave her to a dear friend only because hubby and I are down-sizing and moving to a Retirement Village. Very sad that some people turn and take hate out on somethings that we LOVED and cherished for so many years. The same went for Humphrey B Bear and Fat Cat being dismissed from the children's morning TV shows when my children were so little as they were LOVED the same as the Wiggles. I personally knew the person who was Humphrey B Bear as he lived down my street and to my understanding he was dismissed because Humphrey B Bear didn't have PANTS on. What child would have cared about that? They ALL LOVED Humphrey B Bear - it's the STUPID adults that stuff up the happy times of little children growing up. While I'm on a roll it's also the adults that tell their children that there's NO SANTA, EASTER BUNNY AND FAIRIES (who give out a coin for the lost teeth), let the children have some FUN while they're little as childhood is SO SHORT. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO- Aaaaaugh!!!!
