The Dark Secret Behind Why This Popular 80s Toy Was Banned Will Leave You Speechless!

Ah, the 1980s – a decade of neon leg warmers, big hair, and some of the most iconic toys that defined many Australian childhoods. For those of us who grew up during this era, the mere mention of certain toys can send us spiraling down memory lane, reminiscing about the simpler times when our biggest concern was whether we'd get the latest action figure or electronic game for our birthday.

But not all toys from the 80s have stood the test of time, and there's one in particular that has been erased from history for a very good reason. As we take a stroll through the nostalgic toy gallery, we come across beloved items like the Tamagotchi, teaching us early lessons in responsibility, and Hot Wheels, igniting our imaginations with high-speed races. We remember the Aqua Water Ring Game, which provided hours of frustration and fun, and the Strawberry Shortcake Dolls, with their sweet scents and adorable pets.

Care Bears taught us about the importance of caring and sharing, while the Razor Scooter offered a sense of freedom as we zoomed around the neighborhood. Mr. Potato Head brought laughter with his interchangeable parts, and Furby amazed us with its interactive capabilities. We can't forget the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Beyblades, Bratz Dolls, Polly Pocket, and the Etch A Sketch – each one a treasure in its own right.

But among these cherished playthings, there was one that has been rightfully removed from shelves and our collective memory: the Golliwog doll. With its blackface and exaggerated features, the Golliwog is a stark reminder of the harmful racial stereotypes that were once commonplace in society. Originating in the late 19th century from a children's book, the Golliwog became a popular toy in many countries, including Australia. However, as awareness of its offensive and racist connotations grew, the Golliwog began to disappear from toy stores and public consciousness.

The Golliwog's presence in the 80s toy lineup serves as a reminder of how far we've come in understanding and addressing racism. It's a testament to the progress we've made in creating a more inclusive society that rejects the casual perpetuation of stereotypes. The decision to erase this controversial item from toy galleries is not about erasing history but about acknowledging past wrongs and choosing not to glorify or perpetuate them.

As we look back on the toys of the 80s, it's important to celebrate the joy they brought to our lives while also recognizing the lessons they've taught us beyond mere play. The Golliwog's banishment from toy collections is a powerful statement about the values we hold today and our commitment to respecting all members of our community.

So, while we may hold fond memories of many 80s toys, let's also remember the importance of learning from the past. It's crucial to ensure that the toys we give to the next generation reflect the diverse and inclusive world we strive to create.

I had a beautiful Gollywog doll until only last week when I gave her to a dear friend only because hubby and I are down-sizing and moving to a Retirement Village. Very sad that some people turn and take hate out on somethings that we LOVED and cherished for so many years. The same went for Humphrey B Bear and Fat Cat being dismissed from the children's morning TV shows when my children were so little as they were LOVED the same as the Wiggles. I personally knew the person who was Humphrey B Bear as he lived down my street and to my understanding he was dismissed because Humphrey B Bear didn't have PANTS on. What child would have cared about that? They ALL LOVED Humphrey B Bear - it's the STUPID adults that stuff up the happy times of little children growing up. While I'm on a roll it's also the adults that tell their children that there's NO SANTA, EASTER BUNNY AND FAIRIES (who give out a coin for the lost teeth), let the children have some FUN while they're little as childhood is SO SHORT. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO- Aaaaaugh!!!!
Don't worry! Giving a coin for your grandchildrens' lost teeth will be a thing of the past when we go "cashless". Even giving a credit card will be obsolete! How about a PayPal account for your molar!

I also had a golliwog and a black doll when I was little & certainly didn’t grow up to be a racist. I thought banning them was totally ridiculous. I also loved those imitation cigarette lollies & have never ever smoked a real one. My younger brother loved playing cowboys & Indians with his toy gun but grew up to abhor the real ones. The playthings from our childhood didn’t appear to affect us, apart from fostering a love of books & reading.

I loved my Golliwog. They are for kids for goodness sake. Is it racist for a dark skinned kid to own a pale skinned doll with blonde hair and blue eyes ? Where does it stop. As for Coon, why didn’t they just make it Cheez instead of Cheer. The world has gone mad 0 😤

on behalf of all the offended . bring it back i say or do we ban all the other dolls out there Barbie, Cabbage patch, Ken, cos they all represent some thing,Also i never buy Cheers Cheese anymore and if the wife does i refuse to eat it and go buy a different brand.

The only it was named Coon was because the name of the inventor of the process was Edward Coon. Edward William Coon was an American produce merchant and cheesemaker, who patented a cheese-ripening process that eschewed pasteurization, instead retaining the live bacteria to produce a cheese that was said to be more easily digested and have a more attractive flavor.

Never noticed Humphrey wasn't wearing pants as a kid. How pathetic was that decision! Yogi and Boo Boo didn't wear pants either!

Master Jack

[Chorus]
It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack
You taught me all I know, and I'll never look back
It's a very strange world, and I thank you, Master Jack

[Verse 1]
You took a coloured ribbon from out of the sky
And taught me how to use it as the years went by
To tie up all your problems and make them look neat
And then to sell them to the people in the street

[Chorus]
It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack
You taught me all I know, and I'll never look back
It's a very strange world and I thank you, Master Jack

[Verse 2]
I saw right through the way you started teachin' me now
So some day soon you could get to use me somehow
I thank you very much and know you've been very kind
But I'd better move along before you change my mind

[Chorus]
It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack
No hard feelings if I never come back
It's a very strange world, and I thank you, Master Jack

[Verse 3]
You taught me all those things the way you'd like them to be
But I'd like to see if other people agree
It's all very int'resting the way you disguise
But I'd like to see the world through my own eyes

[Chorus]
It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack
No hard feelings if I never come back
You're a very strange man, and I thank you, Master Jack

[Outro]
You're a very strange man, and I thank you, Master Jack
You're a very strange man, aren't you, Master Jack?

Ban the overpriced Muslim sex dolls as well. They are deemed a safety hazard.

They blow themselves up!!!
