Shoppers are under fire for their 'lazy' freezer aisle habits – are you guilty of this?

Many of us here enjoy going to the supermarket. But whenever you're browsing the aisles, when you see something out of place – does it also drive you up the wall? We know we're not the only ones!

Maybe it's a can of soup with the laundry detergent or a packet of pasta in the chip aisle; either way, it's enough to make our blood boil.

But imagine how infuriating it would be if you saw someone leaving perishable items like milk, vegetables or even meat in the freezer aisle - that would be enough to send us over the edge!

Unfortunately, this is exactly what one Reddit user experienced recently when they were doing their grocery shopping at Woolworths. They took to social media to share their frustration after spotting random items in the store's freezer section.

In one photograph shared online, a customer had left a bottle of Dare flavoured milk on a shelf alongside boxes of frozen Four N Twenty Party Pies. In another image, a bunch of fresh spring onions had been discarded in the dumpling section.

The original poster voiced their outrage at 'lazy' customers who dump unwanted perishable items in the wrong part of the store instead of putting them back where they belong.

'You're allowed to change your mind about a purchase while still in the shop, but it's ridiculous how lazy some people get that they chuck it on the nearest shelf or ...in this case...in [the] freezer,' they wrote.

Hundreds of people agreed with the Reddit user, voicing their disapproval of the customers' actions in the comments section.

'I always put things back where I get them from, I would feel like trash just dumping it at some random location,' said one.

Another added: 'As someone who works at Woolworths, this isn't the worst I've seen. The two packs of pork ribs and a 2L Nudie juice hanging out on the shelves of the cleaning aisle was a little unsavoury.'

Many shared their own frustrating experiences with finding discarded unwanted items in the supermarket.

'I remember during the start of COVID when they had shortages of meat, seeing a pack of mince just shoved on a shelf, not even in the fridge section. How selfish it is when people have to go to two or three different places to find what they need,' one respondent wrote.

Another added: 'I once saw someone leave something like 2 kgs of chicken breast on a shelf (with the cereal or crackers or something). Do people not realise that now has to go into the bin?'

Unfortunately, supermarket workers confirmed that they have no choice but to throw away perishable items that have been dumped in the wrong section.

'We chuck it,' one said. 'They're actually pretty strict on that kind of thing. If an online order is returned on the truck, for whatever reason, all the chilled and frozen is dumped.'
Key Takeaways

  • Woolworths customers have been criticised for their 'selfish' and 'inconsiderate' actions after leaving perishable items in the freezer aisle.
  • Shoppers have voiced their frustration at 'lazy' customers who dump unwanted items in the wrong part of the store, saying it is 'beyond lazy' and a 'waste of food'.
  • Supermarket workers have confirmed that they have to throw away perishable items that have been dumped in the wrong section.
In August, something similar happened at another Woolworths store. It appears that someone placed a tray of Woolworths Beef Mince in the unrefrigerated section on a shelf that was packed with a range of cleaning goods. Gross.

This behaviour infuriated many other customers and several voiced concerns that the mince might be wasted and thrown away as a result.

I worked in supermarkets for years and it was disgusting to find perishable goods dumped on the shelf. Such a waste as they have to be written off. Even found a used disposable nappy once. Often empty wrappers of confectionary that had been eaten and empty drink containers such as iced coffee.

How come everybody is outraged and no-one admits to having done/doing it? This stuff doesn't get there under its own steam
I have lost count of the number of misplaced items I have returned to their right home or to the deli counter. It makes me mad that I am one of the few who actually does the right thing.

I was talking to a friend in Woolies when a woman put 1/2 a cabbage on the Biscuit shelf right in front of me! I told her that the cabbage belong where she picked it up from THE VEGETABLE SECTION! Her friend who was waiting for her called out to me "YOU mind your own business!" I told her to Butt Out! and said to the woman with the cabbage..."Your on camera and you're being bloody lazy, if you don't put it back, I'm calling the manager! She looked embarrassed and took the cabbage back!

There seems to be so many what I call "grubs" about these days. Too lazy to do the right thing. If you select an item and decide you don't want it, take it back to the correct area. I feel for the supermarket staff but also the amount of wastage that is happening because of these grubs.

Some one left six packs of cold meat in the cleaning isle in two different locations in Corio Woolies in Geelong at a time when it was hard to find any meat I let a worker know by the time I found it it was all ready hot and had to be thrown out

Yeah I see it all the time annoys the heck out of me

So did I and it is one of the reasons I retired, as the selfishness of some customers is really tiring. It won't ever stop as those who do this think it is ok. It doesn't impact them but at the end of the day it does. Pricing in supermarkets includes the need to write off spoilt products.

I have even seen a half eaten hot chicken left on the shelf!!!

For a bit of fun and to stop shop lifters which are people that feed themselves or kids I follow them through to the checkout and ask if they are going to pay for the goods or drinks they or their kids consumed during their visit. Makes it awkward for them but fun for me.

You're lucky if you only get verbal abuse from people who are brazen enough to do this! They're teaching their kids how to be as dishonest as themselves.

I once became seriously ill after eating a chicken ready meal - a rare Friday night treat. About three hours later, I began to feel sick and spent the next 12 hours throwing up.

The supermarket - Woolies - put it down to someone having changed their mind and just leaving it on a shelf. Then, a staff member or a well meaning shopper, returned it to the freezer section.

Food poisoning is no joke at any age, but can easily be fatal to those of us who’ve been around the block a few times.

They're not supposed to put it back, it has to be thrown out nowadays, either someone (staff) didn't know, or someone had it in their trolley, changed their mind and put it back!

i here in Noarlunga shopping center Australia see this all the time ant also people go into stores with a take away coffee or drink and just leave it on a shelf anywhere ,,,even in with clothes ,i have mentioned this to the stores ,,nothing they can do about it ,,,because they dont want to loose customers ,,,,,,how pathetic

I once noticed two people eating chocolate and saw them disposing the wrappers.
I called security and reported them, telling him where the wrappers were and gave my name as a witness.
As far as I'm concerned, eating something and not paying, is as good as stealing!

With all the wastage and loss, the supermarkets raise the prices on everything we buy to cover the loss.
Therefore, the guilty and the innocent have to pay more, so the guilty end up helping themselves more.
Vicious cycle!

It's hard to understand how people can be so selfish and lazy. At least leave it at the checkout where a staff member will dispose of it, if you can't take it back to its rightful place. Don't just dump it.

They probably do the same with the trolleys. "Somebody else's problem". Unbelievable!
