Shopper spots flaw in this $18 Kmart item: ‘Vastly different fits’

When it comes to shopping, we all love a good bargain, especially from a trusted retailer like Kmart, known for its affordable and trendy offerings.

But what happens when that bargain buy isn't quite what it seems?

Recently, a savvy shopper revealed a 'messed up' detail in a popular Kmart item that has left customers scratching their heads and calling it a 'size lottery'.

The item in question? Kmart’s Corduroy Mini Skirt, retailing for $18.

The shopper took to social media to share her puzzling find. She posted a photo of the winter staple in three different colours—green, pink, and tan—all lined up on her counter to show a glaring issue.

'Anyone want to guess the sizing of these three Kmart corduroy skirts? The other edge is lined up to show the size difference,' she captioned the post

The shopper revealed that despite the skirts being labelled as size 16 and 14, the fits were wildly inconsistent. 'The green skirt was a size 16 and is too big for me. The pink is a size 14, which fits but not as I'd like it to. The tan is a 16 and fits great,' she explained.

‘I'm all for wearing the size that is comfortable, so even though I'm a 12 in most stores, I just expected a 14 to be a tiny bit smaller than the 16 I already owned.’

‘The two bigger skirts are the same size, same design, but vastly different fits.’

In the comments, the shopper's experience struck a chord with many.

One user dubbed it a 'size lottery’, while others shared their own Kmart sizing woes.

‘I got two the other day, pink and black, and had to get them in a 16 as the other sizes don’t fit, and I’m a 12,’ one shared.

‘I tried on half a dozen pairs of the exact same jeans, and only two fit,’ another wrote.

‘I bought a five-pack of undies from Kmart, and two pairs fit me perfectly. The other three were a smaller size. All labels were size 14,’ a third said.

One user even offered an explanation for why such sizing inconsistencies occur.

‘When one size of pattern is cut, they are cut in a big pile, not individually,’ they said.

‘The top few are close to size, but as they get to the bottom of the fabric pile, size either goes in or out depending on the type of fabric cut, i.e., stretch. This leads to a variation in sizes of one size.’

In a previous story, a heated debate occurred on social media regarding the availability of plus-sized clothing at Kmart.

This was sparked by a shopper’s request for a coat in smaller sizes. You can read more about the story here.

That’s a problem I have found at other stores too. A couple of years ago I bought 6 new bras. They were all the same style etc, but I got 6 different colours. When I went to put them away, I hang mine, I realised they were all different sizes. on the label they were all supposedly the same size, but the band length varied but up to 2 inches

Years ago, I bought a pair of Nike running shoes, tried one on and fitted well.

Got home and tried both on to find the left shoe unable to be put on. The reason?

The right shoe was a 10.5 and the left a 9!

Never bought Nike again.

No need to post - who doesn’t go in and fit. If you don’t try it on shop online

I bought some cargo pants last summer..first pair wrong size always just bought 10 and never had problems..they had wrong tag sizing so didn't check inside..my mistake..went all the way back ..an hours drive to be replaced again checking tag and pants..get home to find the elastic in them wasn't even there at the back but you could see no attempt had been made to put it in.i gave up as the petrol just wasn't worth the Run..so il fix myself b4 next summer and have gone off kmart completely now..which is a pity as the pricing is good..I guess just have to do it the old fashion way and not depend on the stores digression with tags..bad makes..wrong sizing..and even damaged goods on sale..I feel it's just another attitude change with covid from companies trying to make money any way they can..who are also feeling the pinch of cost of living ( business survival )..I read kmart has actually closed some stores but not sure where..so maybe this is just the beginning of kmarts total lack of customer care etc..which is debatable already..

If you are say size 12....take more than one size 12 into the change room. Especially if you are looking for a larger waist band on a pair of slacks. As someone said when they cut the fabric the ones on the bottom of the pile will be different to the first couple.

Thats the problem when a number of years ago, all the making of clothing went of shore. Because people were buying the cheaper brands. And guess. China. At the start there was quality control. Now there isn`t. Buy a T shirt. Always check that from the armhole, to the bottom, side seams match and aren`t twisted. Also trouser, long pants, shorts, the legs are the same length. Even for the more dearer items.
