Shopper furious after the price of a popular milk 'suddenly' jumps to $9.80

Times are tough for a lot of Australians at the moment. The pandemic and the flooding have hit us hard, and many people are struggling to make ends meet.

This scenario might be all too familiar: you go to your local supermarket for your weekly groceries and discover that just about everything has gone up in price as it was last week!

All of a sudden, the price spiked by a couple of dollars overnight with no explanation! You can't help but shake your head in frustration and ask yourself, 'Why?'

Well, members, it’s happened again. Recently, one Coles shopper took to social media to express her disbelief after discovering that the price of one particular milk brand had increased dramatically.

Posting on a well-known Facebook group dedicated to sharing grocery store markdowns, she said she noticed that 3L cartons of a2 Milk were now being sold at $9.80 each. She even shared a photo of a markdown sticker as proof!

'Is $9.80 for a2 Milk normal?' she asked on the Facebook group. 'I recently noticed that the original price on this markdown was $9.80! Surely that's not the norm?'

In response to the shopper's post, many other members of the group revealed they had also noticed an increase in price for this particular item.

According to some commenters, this price hike happened a few weeks ago. 'Yep, they just increased by 10 per cent a couple of weeks ago. The 2L used to be $6 and now is $6.60,' shared one user.

Another went on to add: 'I have moved from fresh milk to UHT milk as I can’t afford the fresh. It sucks; cheese is $11 now. It’s crazy.'

In fact, a2 Light Milk is even more expensive at other grocery stores. IGA and Harris Farm are selling them for $3.30 per litre, while Woolworths is selling them for $3.80 per litre.

So what's the reason behind this sudden price hike? Well, it's believed that the a2 Milk Company has increased prices on its range due to a few different factors.

One possible explanation is that the company, its dairy farmers and processors have experienced significant cost pressures across manufacturing, freight, labour and input costs over the past two years. This is particularly true in terms of transport costs, which have increased along with rising fuel prices.

The price of packaging has also gone up due to global supply constraints, and additional labour has been required to support COVID protocols at processing sites – both of which have contributed to higher costs.

The majority of the price increase is expected to cover the higher cost of production at the farm gate, as the company maintains its dedication to meeting the needs of its customers by supplying them with high-quality goods while also providing for the financial security of its farmers and processors.
Key Takeaways

  • A Coles supermarket customer has been left speechless after noticing that the price of a popular milk buy had increased to almost $10.
  • The customer said she noticed the high price when she picked up a carton that had been reduced to just 98c.
  • It's believed the a2 Milk Company has recently increased prices on its range due to several factors, including transport costs, labour costs, and packaging costs.
We know that this isn't exactly good news for those of us who love our a2 Milk, but unfortunately, there's not much we can do about it! We just hope that the price doesn't continue to increase.

I usually buy 1 x 3ltr Woolies lite milk and maybe 4 or 5 ltrs of the same but in UHT. That way I can stretch out the time between shopping trips. I buy 2 loaves and freeze one for the same reason. As long as I have those two staples I can live off my pantry/freezer stock and shop every three weeks or so.;)

The cost of diesel fuel has increased massively. Just think of your own petrol cost increases, then put two more zero’s on that cost for the poor truckies who have to fill up. Their vehicles take 1000 litres, not 60-70 litres.
This is why costs must increase!
Gas increases will push Toilet Paper production to TRIPLE.
You will pay up to three times more for loo ppr! No longer $11. For 20 Quilton rolls of 180 sheets )11cmx10.5cm). It will cost $28-$30 for the same pack.
A ToiletPaper producer pays $3million per annum Gas Bill.
Thanks to the Greens and Labor, that will increase to $9million for gas.
Who’s to wear the cost? WE will!!

For many years now it has been expensive to buy ‘healthier’ products. Is it more expensive to produce? If we find something has gone up in price unreasonably we could ask the retailer. Or, as I have done, don’t buy it! Yes, I know we prefer to buy a certain product, but it appears that it is being harder to do so unfortunately. The big retailers will pay lip service to your queries/concerns, but usually do nothing about it. It appears to me that Woolworths are steadily replacing our favourite products with their own. Maybe this what this is about?

All goods use diesel to manufacture and transport. Why isn't there a huge complaint about diesel being 50c dearer than petrol.RonJ

Coles has the cheek to do TV promotions "Prices Locked" what a joke, they've increased every single item several times in the last 12 months. Heinz baked beans large cans were $4.50 for a 3 pack, they then went to $5.00, then to $7.50, then they stopped selling the three pack for a while and priced individual cans at $3.20. I simply refused to buy them as I'm sure many shoppers did. They've made the 3 pack available again but it was PURE GREED, their overhead costs wouldn't have seen many increases, they were trading during the entire pandemic and shelves were emptied. No big surprise to read "Coles recorded a 4.3 per cent increase in profit to $1.05 billion!
