Shopper boycotts Aussie supermarket giant after 'awkward' encounter in-store

A trip to the supermarket can be a mixed bag of experiences.

Sometimes, it's a breeze, and other times, it can leave shoppers with a story to tell.

For one customer, a routine visit to Coles led to a heated online discussion and a personal vow never to return.

Melbourne local Shani Chantel was enjoying a 'peaceful' shop at her neighbourhood Coles when things took a turn at the self-serve checkout.

As she prepared to scan her groceries, two Coles employees approached her.

Staff members insisted that she should scan her bulky pack of toilet paper before any smaller items.

According to Shani, the staff told her it was 'illegal' not to do so.

'I looked down at the toilet paper, I looked up and I said, "Get the f*** away from me," Shani recounted in a video.

She went on to say, 'Sir, it is one thing to have to scan this s*** myself... But it is a f****** other thing for you to tell me how the f*** to pack my bag.'

The confrontation quickly escalated as other shoppers looked on in shock.

Shani admitted she 'flipped out' at the workers, and the experience left her so rattled that she vowed never to set foot in the said store.

What's the deal with scanning big items first?

According to a Coles spokesperson, the request ensures that bulky or heavy items aren't accidentally left in the trolley unscanned.

'We know that helping our customers with bulky or heavy items can be a big help—this is all about providing great service to our customers and helping them get through the checkouts quickly and efficiently,' the spokesperson explained.

However, Coles quickly clarified that staff are not supposed to void a customer's order to enforce this practice.

'In isolated cases where this is happening, we would encourage our customers to provide us with this feedback directly, so we can provide coaching and prevent this from happening,' the spokesperson added.

Is it really 'illegal' to scan items in a certain order?

No, it's not illegal to scan your groceries in any particular order.

'As a Coles worker, it is definitely not illegal, but we do get into trouble if we don't at least encourage the customer to scan their bulk items first, unfortunately,' a Coles employee commented on Shani's video.

Supermarkets across Australia have been ramping up their loss prevention tactics, especially as self-checkouts have become more prevalent.

While these measures reduce theft and keep prices down for everyone, they could also lead to awkward or uncomfortable encounters.

For many shoppers, especially seniors, self-checkouts can be daunting.

It's a delicate balance between protecting the store's bottom line and making sure customers feel respected and valued.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation to Shani's, always remember to stay calm and polite and ask for clarification about supermarket rules.

Supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths also encourage customers to share their experiences to help them improve customer service.
Key Takeaways

  • Shani Chantel claimed she was told it was 'illegal' to scan her items out of order at a Coles self-checkout.
  • Coles employees allegedly instructed her to scan bulky items first, which led to an angry confrontation and Ms Chantel vowing to boycott Coles.
  • Coles confirmed staff are encouraged to prioritise bulkier items at checkout to prevent theft and accidental omission, but it is not illegal to scan items out of order.
  • Coles stated that in rare cases where customers may feel uncomfortable, feedback is welcomed so staff can be coached.

I like to scan an pack myself because I rarely buy much at once and like to balance my bags for easier walking. I often ask the attendant for help and they are ALWAYS respectful, polite and helpful. This woman is rude, aggressive and deserves to be treated as a potential shoplifter. No way she is an innocent shopper.

Ok, this woman is a social media attention seeking pest

Look at how she is dressed and those lips are over botoxed

There is definitely another side to this story.
I think she went into Coles looking for a story. I think the allegations are over dramatised .

And her foul mouth needs a good cleaning out.

Just have a look at her social media account , it says it all. It's all About her

I shopped at Coles on Monday as I was doing the spend $70.00 for 4 weeks for points and I had toilet paper and for the first time ever the person keeping an eye at the self check out was quickly over and politely said let me put your toilet paper through for you. I was shocked but didn't think much of it as I would have scanned it. No way I would have stolen it but will know in future to put it through first myself. They should give you the option and communicate that, but he was nice about how he did it but it all happened so fast I didn't really click on. When you are not in steal mode anyway!

I too think she was an attention seeker and unfair to take it out on staff who were only following orders. I had an issue in KMart once when self-service first came into play and only self service check- out was open. I was feeling a bit bewildered then a young staff member approached and told me very abruptly "You have to do it yourself". She staff member really had an attitude problem. I explained I had no idea what to do and was glared at and ignored. So I dumped the few items down there and then and walked out. No need for rudeness from either party.

when they start paying me to scan N pack my own groceries, thats when ill use self check outs,,, till then ill wait N go through the manned checkouts......

Just saying if that had of been me,, (but it wouldnt of) i would of left the items and trolly and what ever i shopped for in that store,, then walked out,,, wouldnt of bought anything.......

Oh why why does a lady have to use that language!! I understand her frustration. Maybe the staff could have approached the situation in a better manner. But the staff don't need to be spoken to in that manner.
I don't use the self serve check outs l prefer to keep staff in a job. Everyone to your own but respect is the key. Customers and staff. In saying that l have encountered some grumpy register staff, l still choose to treat them with respect and a smile. I don't know why they are grumpy or unhappy. Could be for personal reasons or just unhappy in their job. No need to swear to make your point.
Kind regards to all Vicki

You have just appeased her need for attention with your post.

The botox lips tell it all.....However, I keep saying, Why do people shop at Coles or Woollies
When you live in a small town, and you don’t have any other choice. I have no problem with our Coles, they don’t have self serve, so we get personal service, Woolworths, does have a self serve, which I use if only buying a small amount. 😃🐴

I use self check-out for speed but one staff member would stand over me as I scanned the items and seemed to check the bag as well as I put them in. NEVER have I felt so intimidated while out shopping, she seemed to pick certain people for her overbearing attention. I complained about it because I have shopped there for almost thirty years. I did say she needed more, or better, training. She soon disappeared, maybe to a place without human contact.
There are ways of letting customers know about new adaptations, and why. But, if it's not a legal rule then remember it is only a suggestion and customers have the right to pack how it suits them.

My thoughts exactly.

they say give feedback, but things dont change!. I've watched how people are not allowed to put scanned things back in trolley if haven't taken everything out.! That means on floor wherever one's shoes have walked everywhere. I can't lift big items or heavy ones- even 2 x 2L milk can be an issue. So having to work at lower than waist height adds to the challenges. I use the small trolleys at manned as at waist height and conveyer belt same- so much better for those with issues. My bags dont get filled, its based on weight to many checkout/self serve annoyance.

Reading her reaction I have no doubt Cole’s wouldn’t want her and her foul mouth back.
My Cole’s takes goods on serviced registers however it comes through and same with my f book friends. Truly wonder if this wasn’t an attention grabber
