Shopper boycotts Aussie supermarket giant after 'awkward' encounter in-store

A trip to the supermarket can be a mixed bag of experiences.

Sometimes, it's a breeze, and other times, it can leave shoppers with a story to tell.

For one customer, a routine visit to Coles led to a heated online discussion and a personal vow never to return.

Melbourne local Shani Chantel was enjoying a 'peaceful' shop at her neighbourhood Coles when things took a turn at the self-serve checkout.

As she prepared to scan her groceries, two Coles employees approached her.

Staff members insisted that she should scan her bulky pack of toilet paper before any smaller items.

According to Shani, the staff told her it was 'illegal' not to do so.

'I looked down at the toilet paper, I looked up and I said, "Get the f*** away from me," Shani recounted in a video.

She went on to say, 'Sir, it is one thing to have to scan this s*** myself... But it is a f****** other thing for you to tell me how the f*** to pack my bag.'

The confrontation quickly escalated as other shoppers looked on in shock.

Shani admitted she 'flipped out' at the workers, and the experience left her so rattled that she vowed never to set foot in the said store.

What's the deal with scanning big items first?

According to a Coles spokesperson, the request ensures that bulky or heavy items aren't accidentally left in the trolley unscanned.

'We know that helping our customers with bulky or heavy items can be a big help—this is all about providing great service to our customers and helping them get through the checkouts quickly and efficiently,' the spokesperson explained.

However, Coles quickly clarified that staff are not supposed to void a customer's order to enforce this practice.

'In isolated cases where this is happening, we would encourage our customers to provide us with this feedback directly, so we can provide coaching and prevent this from happening,' the spokesperson added.

Is it really 'illegal' to scan items in a certain order?

No, it's not illegal to scan your groceries in any particular order.

'As a Coles worker, it is definitely not illegal, but we do get into trouble if we don't at least encourage the customer to scan their bulk items first, unfortunately,' a Coles employee commented on Shani's video.

Supermarkets across Australia have been ramping up their loss prevention tactics, especially as self-checkouts have become more prevalent.

While these measures reduce theft and keep prices down for everyone, they could also lead to awkward or uncomfortable encounters.

For many shoppers, especially seniors, self-checkouts can be daunting.

It's a delicate balance between protecting the store's bottom line and making sure customers feel respected and valued.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation to Shani's, always remember to stay calm and polite and ask for clarification about supermarket rules.

Supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths also encourage customers to share their experiences to help them improve customer service.

I never use self serve checkouts but one particular lady asks for the bulk items first on the serviced checkout, none of the other staff do. Being an ex checkout chic I put my goods on the belt in order as I know it’s so much easier for the operator. My bulky stuff like cans of drink and large bags of dog food I leave in the trolley. I know these are on the screen and don’t need to be scanned so as I pass through I say I have this, this and this so neither of us has to double handle large heavy items. But for the lady who likes them first, I just do as she asks and don’t argue.

they say give feedback, but things dont change!. I've watched how people are not allowed to put scanned things back in trolley if haven't taken everything out.! That means on floor wherever one's shoes have walked everywhere. I can't lift big items or heavy ones- even 2 x 2L milk can be an issue. So having to work at lower than waist height adds to the challenges. I use the small trolleys at manned as at waist height and conveyer belt same- so much better for those with issues. My bags dont get filled, its based on weight to many checkout/self serve annoyance.
I must have the best Cole’s anywhere. I am disabled with a service dog. My bags are filled and passed to me to put in my trolley. Never seen any problems will let them check bags etc no problem. Those who are honest have nothing to be afraid of.

Ok, this woman is a social media attention seeking pest

Look at how she is dressed and those lips are over botoxed

There is definitely another side to this story.
I think she went into Coles looking for a story. I think the allegations are over dramatised .

And her foul mouth needs a good cleaning out.

Just have a look at her social media account , it says it all. It's all About her

She is disgusting no wonder people stared at her using that filthy language.

I try to avoid self-serve checkouts whenever possible.

If they want you to use them then maybe they should offer a small discount on your total bill…even 5% or if they are tight-ars*s 2.5%. They are saving on wages so any discount is better than none.

They shove it in your face with their profits…so why not give a bit back to their customers. Coles & Woolworths are just raking in the money with absolutely no respect to their customers.

VERY rarely do I enter their stores.

In what universe is it okay to speak to ANYONE like that, let alone employees simply doing their job?! And then to go online and complain about the staff, shows a gargantuan sense of entitlement.

How does someone come to believe this behaviour is appropriate? My first reaction would have been to ask why. And let's not forget the fact that the law states that any business has the right to enforce their rules, even if you don't agree with them, and you can be asked to leave if you can't or won't comply.

I would say that this woman believes she can go crashing her way through life with her bad temper and foul language helping her get what she wants. One of these days, she'll meet her match.

Oh why why does a lady have to use that language!! I understand her frustration. Maybe the staff could have approached the situation in a better manner. But the staff don't need to be spoken to in that manner.
I don't use the self serve check outs l prefer to keep staff in a job. Everyone to your own but respect is the key. Customers and staff. In saying that l have encountered some grumpy register staff, l still choose to treat them with respect and a smile. I don't know why they are grumpy or unhappy. Could be for personal reasons or just unhappy in their job. No need to swear to make your point.
Kind regards to all Vicki
Why,because she's not a lady

With a mouth like spreading profanity to store employees, I would not want her shopping in Coles.
She obviously needs to learn some respect when speaking to others…
Coles can do without her business!!

What a potty mouthed piece of work that woman is, no wonder they wanted her to scan the toilet paper first. Unbelievable language!!

If I have to scan my groceries I will do it how I want, in the order I want. Or they can open more checkouts and serve me.

when they put me on the payroll and give me a discount to scan and pack my own groceries, then I'll think about using a self check out, until then I'll wait and go through the manned checkouts where I put items I want packed together through in order... pantry, fridge, freezer etc

With so much available technology, why can't the visual display unit remind the customer when items remain in the shopping basket before accepting payment? The intrusive cameras can be angled at the trolleys rather than at me using the manned check-out across.
Sorry, I forgot, check-out staff didn't lose their job, they've been redeployed.
