Random act of kindness at ALDI divides the internet

We're big advocates of paying it forward here at Seniors Discount Club, and we're always on board whenever we hear a story about random acts of kindness. That's why we adored this recent story about a kind act at an ALDI supermarket this past weekend.

It all started when a shopper from Noosa shared her experience in a local community Facebook group. According to her post, when she was at the checkout counter, the person in front of her, a complete stranger, offered to pay for her groceries.

Yes, you read that correctly. Despite the fact that he was already finished with his shopping, this anonymous Good Samaritan decided to pay for the items in the woman's cart, leaving her amazed and extremely grateful.

'I know I said thank you at the time, but you're amazing... It's my birthday today, so to have my groceries paid for by a complete stranger was a birthday blessing,' she wrote in the post, still in awe of the kind gesture she had experienced.

While most of the responses in the comments section were overwhelmingly kind, appreciative, and supportive of the random act of kindness, one fellow shopper felt differently.

In her post, this commenter said she would've been 'insulted' if someone did the same thing for her, citing not being in need of help and being able to afford her own groceries as her reasons.

This sparked a huge debate among members of the group, especially when the woman went on to explain that it's 'weird to pay for a stranger's groceries' and that she would've 'politely declined' the good deed if someone offered.

'I think I would be offended,' she said. 'Does this guy think I'm poor?'

After the controversial comment sparked a heated debate, the post's author rejoined the conversation to clarify that the man had only paid for the four items in her basket, not the entire purchase. She vehemently stressed that she wasn't offended by the stranger's act - in fact, she welcomed it and encouraged it.

The shopper went on to express her gratitude towards the kind stranger, emphasising that his act of kindness had a positive impact on both of them.

'This man did a wonderful thing for me. It made him feel good, and it made me feel good. To see there are decent, kind people in the world is surely a good thing in anybody's eyes,' she said.

She then addressed the naysayer, urging them not to dismiss the importance of a simple act of kindness. 'You're making his kindness seem like a bad thing when it was only meant to be kind,' she said.

It's worth noting that while heart-warming gestures like the one at ALDI generally receive positive reactions, there have been recent occasions when certain acts of kindness have sparked controversy, particularly when they involve filming without the recipient's consent and posting the footage online.

Last year, an Australian content creator faced backlash after filming himself giving a bouquet of flowers to a random woman sitting alone in a shopping centre. The video was later shared online and went viral, reaching millions of views worldwide.

However, the woman in the clip had no idea she was being filmed, and when she found out, she felt uncomfortable and violated. The content creator later apologised for his actions. Read the full story here.

Key Takeaways

  • An ALDI customer was surprised when a stranger paid for her groceries at the supermarket.
  • The post sparked a heated debate when one woman called the gesture 'offensive'.
  • Many argued that the stranger's kind act shouldn't be judged negatively.
  • There have been other occasions when certain so-called acts of kindness have received backlash, especially when posted online.

The world could always use more kindness and generosity, no matter how big or small the act. We applaud the stranger for his selfless gesture and hope it inspires others to pay it forward.

However, it's also important to consider the feelings and boundaries of the recipient.

Consent is key, and it's important to remember that not everyone wants to be the subject of a viral video or social media post. Let's continue to spread kindness in a way that respects others' privacy and dignity.

I’m a person who has difficulty accepting help, even from my children- it comes from a fierce independence I’ve had since childhood!
With the result that I’ve always found men in my life that think I will carry them, and ask for nothing! So here I am single in My 70s all because I never learned to accept help!
It’s something We should all teach our children.

I think a random act of kindness should be accepted with grace wether you can afford it or not. You can always pay it forward at a later date. Posting a video of your action however detracts from the act itself as with the man that gave a woman flowers.
I believe it’s a lovely thing to do if you can afford it. Paying it forward in some way can be your way of being grateful. That can be anything that helps another person which is what it’s all about. This can be anything from helping someone to cross a road to paying for shopping. It’s all about respect, kindness & gratitude. ❤️😊

It’s called paying it forward. And he asked permission first. You can always say no. Also, I don’t believe it was filmed. And, you never know, it may be for someone who is really struggling.

Is there a lot of poor looking women around? This always seems to happen to a lot of them for some reason? 🤔

I certainly wouldn't pay for anyone elses shopping. I'm not a bank for someone else. My money is for me. They should make sure they've got enough money to pay for it before they decide to go shopping or put something back if they can't afford it when they're in the shop. Why don't they check their bank balance before they go out? Takes seconds on your phone.
Firstly, it happens to women because it's mostly women who do the grocery shopping.

It used to be great for me when I could go shopping & not have to worry that I might have picked up more groceries than I could afford. Not now that I'm on the Aged Pension & have to pay my specialist every 6 weeks while my refund from Medicare leaves me $360 out of pocket. As for checking my bank balance before I go out - I do not have that available on my phone. Have not & will not EVER do internet banking. This leaves me too much at risk of somebody gaining access to my bank a/c & stripping it clean. And I'm not alone as a senior who has this fear & will not put information out there for scammers to get access to my money.

You need to get a bit more understanding of life for many people in this country & learn some empathy.

Some people just live to be miserable. They can’t see joy or happiness in the world without trying to suck it all out. A simple thank you or no thank you would suffice in this situation but simply accept it with the grace it was intended and pass it on as soon as you can! Don’t try and analyse motives. Just be glad such people still exist.

TO the person who found such generosity offensive, you are poor, poor in manners, humility and ethics.
You can bet you would be the first to complain if you didn't have the $$, and I can imagine that no way would you be generous yourself. Keep your money and your opinion to yourself, I hope they make you happy.

The naysayers have probably never heard of the concept of pay it forward. Bah humbug.

My wife and I always do the shopping together.

My wife and I always go shopping together. We buy what we want to buy. We're originally from the UK and have only got the UK state pension, a small private pension and some savings to live on. The UK pension doesn't increase every year as we live here now and don't get the Oz pension for 10 years. And don't qualify for any Oz benefits.
I've also got quite a few medications to buy every few weeks which is extra on our budget but still spend what we like.
As for not having internet banking. Looks like all the scare stories must have got to you? My wife doesn't stop looking at our bank account on her phone and keeps telling me what payments have been made.🙄 I don't know how people can do without it these days? It's the only way I pay for everything now. In a supermarket I just hold the phone above the payment terminal and my bill is paid and my points added all in one go. 🙂

It was a lively gesture. A true act of kindness. I would have appreciated it very much. I really can't understand why anyone would be upset or angry about it. Maybe he was just passing on this kindness from a similar experience. I hope this lady gets to do the same.

That sounds a bit selfish and unkind of you to say, but it’s your choice to do or not to do. I would have tried to make the giver understand I had the money in my car, if that was the case, and if the giver still insisted then I would very politely thank him/her and try and get his/her number offering to repay the money. If it was still insistence on the giver’s part that it was not necessary to repay, then I would thank the person profusely; rest assured there are still people of this ilk left in society. Sure, we’re all finding the cost of living becoming more unbearable - some more so than others - but the gesture of this man was very kind. None of us know the receiver’s circumstances or the giver’s intention so we should not put ourselves out there commenting - I wouldn’t get involved but I’ve only replied to this because of your rude & selfish attitude posted here.

I dress extremely well, and don't look poor, but I am. With 4 food allergies, I have to shop extremely carefully, and sometimes have to go without one or 2 items on my list...I'd love it if someone paid my bill...but I shop online, so I'm not embarrassed at having to remove things at checkout, and I can keep a tab on my spend easier, so I guess I'm stuck paying for my own..

I’ve been offered twice at the supermarket but politely refused with a smile and a thank you. The people weren’t offended by any means, I felt embarrassed though but in saying that I remained polite 😊
