Qantas blamed after luggage worth thousands was left ‘completely destroyed’

There's nothing more disappointing than learning that your luggage has been damaged or lost during a flight. Unfortunately, this is something many travellers have to endure – for one reason or another.

Jimmy Huddle, a 45-year-old entrepreneur who runs a popular Melbourne-based kombucha company, is one such example.

The Aussie traveller slammed Qantas after three of his rare surfboards were damaged during his flight from Melbourne to Newcastle.

In a TikTok he posted; Mr Huddle questioned the behaviour of the baggage handlers.

‘Melbourne Baggage handlers have completely destroyed three of my boards whilst flying from Melbourne to Newcastle. Three days in and have heard nothing from them…imagine knowing you accidentally damaged someone’s property and just didn’t call them,’ he wrote in the caption and tagged the airlines’ official social media page.

The clip revealed that three of Jimmy’s expensive surfboards appeared to be snapped at the noses.

‘There’s something not quite right with the baggage handlers down there,’ he said in the video.

‘These are thousand-dollar surfboards – all completely destroyed,’ he claimed in the clip. The man also said that he found a ‘clue’ that reveals exactly what happened to his luggage.

He claimed: ‘A vehicle has obviously run over the board bag. Because there’s no other way that kind of damage could have happened.’

When he contacted Qantas, he revealed that he wasn’t given much reassurance over the incident. And instead, they had Jimmy fill out an online form and wait 21 days following the investigation.

Hundreds commented on Jimmy’s video, which garnered over 274,000 views in a span of a few days.

‘Just another reason why I never fly Qantas,’ shared one social media user.

‘Good luck getting anything from them, been fighting them for over 9 months and still going without an outcome,’ warned another.

While another shared that they lost count in the last couple of years just how ‘terrible’ the airline is when fixing issues.

Some asked the man if he’d seen the video of baggage handlers throwing luggage onto the conveyor belt. They were referring to staff of Swissport Australia – the bag-handling subcontractor of Qantas – who were filmed mishandling passengers’ belongings. You can read more about that story here.

In a statement, Qantas explained that they have been in touch with Jimmy and ‘apologised for his experience’. They added that they were investigating the incident.

‘We are urgently reviewing CCTV and working with our ground handling contractors to find out what has happened,’ they said.

Responsibility is Qantas's being the prime contractor, the Swissport are directly employed by the airline

In April last year had damage our luggage on arrival at Darwin, reported it to Airnorth staff at Darwin airport sent four unanswered emails to Airnorth, obviously no concern for public relations.

Another lie from Qantas, they will do nothing, just ask everyone else that has had prblems or damaged luggage. This thing they call a CEO needs to go, he has ruined what was once the best airline in the world.

It's the Baggage Handlers who are at fault , but ultimately it is the responsibility of Qantas as they are acting on behalf of Qantas .
If you have a complaint with ANY company , take the time to Google and find the guy at the very top of the tree , THEN collate your complaint ,
attatch phot and video evidence on a small USB and send it at the top Registered post option with a 21 day time line , remind him or her that should you not get a reply at the expiration time you will post it on every social media platform known to man AND go to the press . Be patient in your Google search as it takes time sometimes to find the person at the top but it works . It took me over 3 hours to find the person I was looking for , and finally went to bed at 3 am BUT - I got a reply by 0730 , and from the guy at the top . Always check your response 3 times to ensure there are no mistakes , that way they know they are not dealing with someone they can ignore . With this company , it was owned by another which was owned by another , but I found him in the end .Now I get good service and politeness from the staff , which is what started it all in the first place and I am sure " the little irish guy " Will take notice . I am indirectly associated with Qantas and even as an Aviator I won't fly with them , unless I really have to and the it's always seat 1B or I don't go and I will fly myself , and for QF that would be embarrassing if it ever got out . So , do your research including the publicity they already receive , be polite but very firm and you should get a satisfactory result , and who knows , your next flight , if you choose to use QF , you also may have a 1B seat allocation . Happy Landings .

Qantas takes its customers for granted ,Qantas believes itself to be a top airline, it used to be but isnt any more . Customers are sick and tired of Joyce ignoring problems, problems have to be fixed pronto, he has a big enough staff to do things quickly. Shareholders are the only people Joyce is interested in. When customers start leaving Qantas for other airlines ,shareholders wont be happy. Dividens will get smaller. I for one are opting for another airline company. So long Qantas.

Hi , me again . I have also seen from the first class lounge at another airline the Qantas baggage handling staff also literally throwing luggage from the carriers onto the travel ramp , so many times that I just simply say " Oh well , they haven't changed " , and that's over the last 10 years . Quite a long while ago when QF was the only aircraft going to where I needed to be , we landed , luggage came off very quickly , mine being in Business was near first off , expensive suitcase was a write off . Straight around to the check in desk , asked for the Operations Controller , then presented the suitcase , which was obscured from the check in staff , horrified look on his face , relevant forms immediately completed , and off I went , straggly suitcase in tow . 2 weeks later , a cheque for $500 and an apology .
QF - 0 Me - 1 , except my luggage no longer matched , but a profit also on my part , and I wasn't in uniform either , but I am thinking back now , my Air Crew Luggage Tags were still on the case , could have helped . So hint to the newbies , take your damage immediately to the Check in Desk and get the Ops guy . If there are lots of people checking in - make more noise , and the last thing they want is the attention , BUT be polite or they can have you removed , also play the damaged goods card . If they push - push back , accept NO excuses ! PS : I think they have a Damaged Goods Bay now , but always be firm but polite , then they have no recourse about abusive passengers , as I am sure there are a lot who don't think first and act second , then you are on the backfoot with nowhere to go except the exit door .

Quantas baggage handlers are so inept they couldn't find the floor if they fell out of bed. Count the total number of Quantas bagage handlers, divide that by 500 and you have their cumulative IQ.

This problem will continue until there are consequences for the baggage handlers. If there are no consequences they don't care. Very simple.
Hopefully Qantas can get their baggage handlers inline, otherwise it is their reputation that is impacted.
