Qantas blamed after luggage worth thousands was left ‘completely destroyed’

There's nothing more disappointing than learning that your luggage has been damaged or lost during a flight. Unfortunately, this is something many travellers have to endure – for one reason or another.

Jimmy Huddle, a 45-year-old entrepreneur who runs a popular Melbourne-based kombucha company, is one such example.

The Aussie traveller slammed Qantas after three of his rare surfboards were damaged during his flight from Melbourne to Newcastle.

In a TikTok he posted; Mr Huddle questioned the behaviour of the baggage handlers.

‘Melbourne Baggage handlers have completely destroyed three of my boards whilst flying from Melbourne to Newcastle. Three days in and have heard nothing from them…imagine knowing you accidentally damaged someone’s property and just didn’t call them,’ he wrote in the caption and tagged the airlines’ official social media page.

The clip revealed that three of Jimmy’s expensive surfboards appeared to be snapped at the noses.

‘There’s something not quite right with the baggage handlers down there,’ he said in the video.

‘These are thousand-dollar surfboards – all completely destroyed,’ he claimed in the clip. The man also said that he found a ‘clue’ that reveals exactly what happened to his luggage.

He claimed: ‘A vehicle has obviously run over the board bag. Because there’s no other way that kind of damage could have happened.’

When he contacted Qantas, he revealed that he wasn’t given much reassurance over the incident. And instead, they had Jimmy fill out an online form and wait 21 days following the investigation.

Hundreds commented on Jimmy’s video, which garnered over 274,000 views in a span of a few days.

‘Just another reason why I never fly Qantas,’ shared one social media user.

‘Good luck getting anything from them, been fighting them for over 9 months and still going without an outcome,’ warned another.

While another shared that they lost count in the last couple of years just how ‘terrible’ the airline is when fixing issues.

Some asked the man if he’d seen the video of baggage handlers throwing luggage onto the conveyor belt. They were referring to staff of Swissport Australia – the bag-handling subcontractor of Qantas – who were filmed mishandling passengers’ belongings. You can read more about that story here.

In a statement, Qantas explained that they have been in touch with Jimmy and ‘apologised for his experience’. They added that they were investigating the incident.

‘We are urgently reviewing CCTV and working with our ground handling contractors to find out what has happened,’ they said.
