Prime Minister Albanese reveals a new plan to slash the cost of living for Australians

Most people have been facing budgeting constraints as inflation bites across the economy. Rising food, fuel and housing costs have put a tremendous financial strain on many families already doing it tough after the pandemic.

In a move that could bring much-needed relief to many, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the government's intention to introduce new measures to ease families' cost of living pressures nationwide.

With the May budget on the horizon, the Prime Minister has signalled that his administration is actively seeking ways to alleviate financial stress without exacerbating inflation.

During a press conference in Sydney, Mr Albanese expressed optimism about the year ahead, emphasising that the government's focus will be on providing cost of living relief.

'Our priority will be to provide cost of living relief whilst taking pressure off inflation,' he stated, acknowledging the dual challenges that have hit Australians hard: the COVID-19 pandemic and global inflation.

‘I have asked Treasury and Finance to come up with further propositions that we’ll consider in the lead-up to the May budget this year,’ he added.

While specific details of the measures are yet to be disclosed, Mr Albanese highlighted the government's awareness of the burden that global events have placed on the cost of living in Australia.

In response to these challenges, the government has already implemented several initiatives, including fee-free TAFE to support education and skills development, an energy price relief plan to tackle rising utility costs, and a significant reduction in the price of medicines.

The Prime Minister also mentioned a change for rent relief in the press conference. He said: ‘That’s why we’ve also undertaken increases in rent relief, for example—the largest increase in rent assistance for 30 years, along with other measures that we took assisting single mums.’

In a social media post, Mr Albanese briefly touched upon the government’s plan for Medicare and Home Guarantee Scheme.

He wrote: ‘We're working hard to strengthen Medicare, and we're starting the year with all 58 of our free Urgent Care Clinics up and running.’

‘As of today, our expanded Home Guarantee Scheme has helped 26,000 Australians buy a place of their own. In 2024, it will help thousands more,’ he added.

Mr Albanese also pointed out that cash handouts will be curtailed to avoid inflation.

‘We asked [the Treasury and Department of Finance] to consider what measures can take pressure off families on [the] cost of living without putting pressure on inflation. That’s the key issue,’ he stated.

‘If you were just to distribute additional cash to people, you potentially make inflation worse and therefore don’t help to solve the problem.’

I hope it's better than all his other bloody promises, so far?

Not enough to help . All he’s worried about is inflation which he clearly does not understand. He keeps breaking down in tears - emotionally labile bipolar . Needs hospitalisation for a while - or Atleast an assessment for bipolar depression. I can’t stand to see a leader of our country so labile . Not a good look in war disease time.
Here we go with the bipolar again.
Give it up, it is highly insulting to those actually suffering from this insidious infliction
What is wrong with you people??

Pensions for older Australians need to increase substantially. We have costs too, especially if we are renters.

Good news, Albo has a plan to make a plan, in MAY. What's wrong with NOW
People are suffering NOW.
He could have made a plan anytime in 2023 if he hadn't been so busy flitting around the world

Lets see at the moment it's January, so everybody's got to suffer till the May Budget. Which won't take effect till after that?.

Putting Medicare back together after the LNP destroyed it by stealth since the Howard government! As for the bi-polar comment, that is insulting and disrespectful. Just another puppet who will leave parliament with his “ set for life “ payments and access to superannuation, along with all the other living ex - politicians. The only job in Australia where they still get paid. What a joke. Imagine all THAT extra money! 💰 Rant over, don’t harass me for my opinion, we all have one! 🙄🙃

I think it makes sense. If you just dish out cash naturally people will spend it and up goes inflation again which in turn will have the RBA putting up interest rates. Best to put money into things like rent assistance, Medicare and many other non inflationary things than splash cash. I know a lot of people will say “what about me” but at the end of the day it’s about helping those most in need. I personally don’t need any help and I hate to see people suffering because of this world we are living in today which, along with greed from a few is causing this.

Seems to be becoming a habit . First we had someone calling people "spastic" and now it's "bipolar".

Agree whokeheartedly. The last time time they gave cash one of my stepdaughters spent it on a tattoo and yet her children get around hungry in dirty, raggy clothes .

I don't believe a single word that comes from this multi-millionaire's mouth. Airbus✈️Albo is all for himself. He wasted a massive $450+ million when he tried to divide our country. He made this empty promisses before he was elected. He won't be re-elected.
And the bastard will bring this crap bloody voice in by stealth

Thank you, I heartily agree with you. Insulting people certainly doesn’t help. Yes, course we’d like more financial help but I feel the government are doing their best in what has become a fragile and unstable world. I, for one, count my blessings every day for what I have. There are soo many people, both overseas and in Australia, whose lives have been turned upside down because of wars and disaster. Gratitude and kindness go a long way.

I don't believe anything will change until people start to live within their means. I know people who would not give up anything to help themselves e.g smoking drinking and many other things that would help with their costs of living. To me, it seems that the people who need the help are single people living in rental homes because the rental is growing in large amounts after each inspection. How these people can even afford to rent now is a wonder to me. I don't know what can be done by the Government though.

A lot of these are the people who also made these choices when they were young and now complain about having nothing.
We all make choices in our life and I've made some bad ones but then you have to live with the consequences of those choices.
Karma.

Aha that Prime Minister again making one of his many announcements but never following through. All p#ss and wind and teeth and tongue. All the fool is good at his fighting Tories and not even proficient at that either. Still waiting for the $275 relief on power bills. The National airline the Flying Kangaroo and the Leader the Flying Fool, or should I say Lying Fool.
