Prime Minister Albanese reveals a new plan to slash the cost of living for Australians

Most people have been facing budgeting constraints as inflation bites across the economy. Rising food, fuel and housing costs have put a tremendous financial strain on many families already doing it tough after the pandemic.

In a move that could bring much-needed relief to many, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the government's intention to introduce new measures to ease families' cost of living pressures nationwide.

With the May budget on the horizon, the Prime Minister has signalled that his administration is actively seeking ways to alleviate financial stress without exacerbating inflation.

During a press conference in Sydney, Mr Albanese expressed optimism about the year ahead, emphasising that the government's focus will be on providing cost of living relief.

'Our priority will be to provide cost of living relief whilst taking pressure off inflation,' he stated, acknowledging the dual challenges that have hit Australians hard: the COVID-19 pandemic and global inflation.

‘I have asked Treasury and Finance to come up with further propositions that we’ll consider in the lead-up to the May budget this year,’ he added.

While specific details of the measures are yet to be disclosed, Mr Albanese highlighted the government's awareness of the burden that global events have placed on the cost of living in Australia.

In response to these challenges, the government has already implemented several initiatives, including fee-free TAFE to support education and skills development, an energy price relief plan to tackle rising utility costs, and a significant reduction in the price of medicines.

The Prime Minister also mentioned a change for rent relief in the press conference. He said: ‘That’s why we’ve also undertaken increases in rent relief, for example—the largest increase in rent assistance for 30 years, along with other measures that we took assisting single mums.’

In a social media post, Mr Albanese briefly touched upon the government’s plan for Medicare and Home Guarantee Scheme.

He wrote: ‘We're working hard to strengthen Medicare, and we're starting the year with all 58 of our free Urgent Care Clinics up and running.’

‘As of today, our expanded Home Guarantee Scheme has helped 26,000 Australians buy a place of their own. In 2024, it will help thousands more,’ he added.

Mr Albanese also pointed out that cash handouts will be curtailed to avoid inflation.

‘We asked [the Treasury and Department of Finance] to consider what measures can take pressure off families on [the] cost of living without putting pressure on inflation. That’s the key issue,’ he stated.

‘If you were just to distribute additional cash to people, you potentially make inflation worse and therefore don’t help to solve the problem.’

All I can see is someone looking for votes, His target has been families with preschool children, I would question his figure of 28.000 helped in home ownership, which by the way is inflationary as are his other suggestions.

Why did you say at the start he has revealed a plan and you go on to say he is still working on a plan?

and when we see what the plan actually is ,THEN we`ll see if it`s likely or not to be any help.

I think it makes sense. If you just dish out cash naturally people will spend it and up goes inflation again which in turn will have the RBA putting up interest rates. Best to put money into things like rent assistance, Medicare and many other non inflationary things than splash cash. I know a lot of people will say “what about me” but at the end of the day it’s about helping those most in need. I personally don’t need any help and I hate to see people suffering because of this world we are living in today which, along with greed from a few is causing this.
yes, -i agree.__ they splash it out to those that get high pays but waste them, but people who GENUINELY NEED IT. ARE IGNORED.

he has , but he has also got a few things wrong. two being he has 1 he still lets the wealthy use loop holes to avoid paying their fair share of tax and 2 being he ignores people like me who are GENUINELY struggling financially.

A lot of these are the people who also made these choices when they were young and now complain about having nothing.
We all make choices in our life and I've made some bad ones but then you have to live with the consequences of those choices.
Karma.
I agree. Life is full of choices & a large reason why many are in financial stress is due to the choices they have made. Financial choices made over many, many years will largely determine our finances later in life. It is about making compromises & balancing spending between the "now" & providing for our future over many, many years. I do get upset when people don't do this & then expect the govt (tax payer) to fund theircost of living. I know there are genuinely people who do need help due to illness etc not enabling them to do this, but if everyone else looks at their past with real honesty, then they may just realise they have created their own lifestyle.

Always refer to families and not individuals with no relief for people trying to maintain a mortgage which has got progressively harder due to increased in interest and according to your advices in same section further aggressive interest rate increases forecasted 2024. Even if took option to sell being on limited income and age securing a rental in this current environment would be difficult

Thank you, I heartily agree with you. Insulting people certainly doesn’t help. Yes, course we’d like more financial help but I feel the government are doing their best in what has become a fragile and unstable world. I, for one, count my blessings every day for what I have. There are soo many people, both overseas and in Australia, whose lives have been turned upside down because of wars and disaster. Gratitude and kindness go a long way.
Too much to ask of too many it seems :)

Oh, but no, never never let the TRUTH get in the way of their good? (lol) stories! Entitled, greedy, complaining, over inflated sense of self....I could go on, but my ears are ringing with the Gimme Gimme Gimme ... 'I built this country' LOL
