I'm in the process of proof-reading my son's PhD thesis, and I'm delighted to say that reading to a child from a very early age encourages that child to learn to read for themselves also at a very early age. In turn, this exposure to the written language encourages usage of correct written English.
This is giving me an easier time right now.
Double meanings in jokes are great, but in a PhD ....it has to be one meaning only...the right one.

Yes, I agree with your comments about only one meaning in a PhD or other official documents and writings.

Error in my previous post - it should have been “usage of words like ‘bought’ instead of ‘brought’ ”. Bought means ‘to buy’ whereas brought means ‘to bring’. However ‘bought’ is constantly used when the word that should be used is ‘brought’.

Even though this is posted as a joke, I am a proper language Nazi when it comes to the English language. Besides it being my top subject at school, I was also a proofreader for a professor at a Hospital University, who had numerous publications in various medical posts. Bear in mind we had no spellcheck in those days.
I love the challenge and am proud to say my two kids, the eldest fortunately schooled outside Australia and the younger was taught English by me in 6 weeks from scratch, winning the reading prize at school 6 months later.
They both excelled in the subject at university, making me look like an amateur.
Sadly, I find the English language in Australia is poorly taught and used, even on TV.

I take exception to criticism of the Australian education system. Our universities are highly regarded and sought after by overseas students.
Australians aren't focussed on grammar, not because it isn't taught, but because they don't feel it's very important, like a lot of other things. It's this laid-back attitude that makes Australians tolerant and easy-going, and willing to accept outsiders.
