Nestlé responds to ALDI customer's complaints about Singapore-made MILO with “really weird taste”, assures Australian-made version will be back

An ALDI customer has taken to social media to air her frustration over the "really weird" taste of MILO that she bought from her local store.

Sharing her concern on the Aldi Mums Facebook group, the customer claimed that she discovered that the 1.25 kg tin of MILO that she purchased from her local store was actually made in Singapore instead of Australia.

She wrote: “For anyone who buys MILO from ALDI you might like to know this."

"Last week I bought a tin of MILO from ALDI, it tasted really weird and had a really weird texture. After giving it a few more goes, I decided to call Nestle to find out if they had changed something."

The mum revealed that upon checking with customer service, the 1.25 kg tins of MILO being sold in ALDI were temporarily being manufactured in Singapore while "machines are being updated" in the Australian factory.

It was said, however, that the tins are "Packed in Australia".

“Make sure you check the back of the tin if you want MILO that actually tastes like MILO (trust me you don’t want to waste your money on the one made in Singapore, it’s terrible)," she wrote.

The customer also claimed that "real MILO" was available in Coles.

“I found real MILO in Coles in a 1kg tin,” she wrote along with a photo of a MILO tin labelled with "Made in Australia".

A number of ALDI customers — who claimed to have purchased MILO from the retailer — backed the mum's claim, saying that they also noticed the change in the taste of the powdered choccy drink.

One person wrote: “Oh my gosh! I literally had a glass of MILO and couldn’t stomach it!”

“I thought my taste buds had changed being an adult with responsibilities, but I think I had the Singapore one! It tastes nothing like my childhood.”

Another comment read: “That explains the taste. I thought I was going mad.”

A third added: “Oh my goodness, I took a RAT test cause I thought I lost my sense of taste. Purchased another bottle of milk cause I thought the milk was off. And all along it was the damn 1.5kg MILO!”

Nestlé responds

A Nestlé Australia spokesperson confirmed that the production of MILO tins being sold in ALDI has been moved to Singapore while factories in Smithtown, NSW are being upgraded.

The spokesperson also insisted that while the German retailer sells Singapore-made products, other retailers — such as Coles and Woolworths — are still selling Australia-made MILO products.

"This was a temporary change and tins of Aussie MILO are already coming back on the shelf,” the spokesperson said.

It was also acknowledged that there is a difference in the taste of MILO made in Singapore compared to the ones made in Australia, describing them as "not quite the same".

The spokesperson said: “MILO is proudly made in Smithtown on the NSW mid-North Coast – where it has been made since 1934.”

“We have been investing in upgrading our factory for the future. To ensure MILO fans didn’t miss out during this time, we imported some MILO from our factory in Singapore. This was limited to the 1.25kg tin sold in ALDI for a very limited time."

“While we know it’s not quite the same, the recipe is very similar to our Australian produced MILO and every effort has been made to ensure the ingredients and taste is as close to the recipe that MILO fans know and love.”

ALDI customers who have purchased the product and are not satisfied with it are encouraged to ask for a full refund or replacement.

It should be noted, however, that the customer is required to return the product to stores to claim the refund.

I haven't bought the Milo, but I once bought a tube of a very well known brand of toothpaste from the Op shop. It had Asian writing on it, but that didn't bother me at the time.....until I used it.
It tasted different, it was awful, and it had a different texture, it was very thick.
I was supporting the Op Shop, but will never do that again.

This seems to happen a lot at Aldi. It's one of the reasons I don't usually shop at Aldi in spite of their cheaper prices.
I quickly checked the Milo I bought at Coles two weeks ago and thankfully it has a Made in Australia message on it.

Not being a Milo drinker luckily I didn't come across this problem. However, when I do buy from Aldi I tend to spend a bit of time reading the packaging as all too often I have found that foreign sourced stuff has a very different taste.

Thanks for the heads up. I have usually added Carnation evaporated milk to my coffee but some time ago, I noticed it had a nasty aftertaste. Upon checking the tin, discovered it was made overseas not Australia. Definitely off my shopping list. 😡

We were big Milo drinkers as kids even sprinkled large spoonfuls onto a bowl of ice cream. Sadly even "Made in Australia" Milo isn't as good as Milo from the 70s or even up to the late 80s. It's now more of a powder form instead of big bits of chocolate crystal goodness. Now there's not much of a crunchy Milo top to spoon out & crunch up in a cold glass of milk 😖

Years ago I bought a tin of Milo from a cheap shop, it tasted awful and found out it was made in China, I took it back and got a refund, so now I make sure it's made in Australia.
