Mum complains about Mother's Day gift item at Woolies: "This is just un-Australian"

Mother's Day is still a few weeks away from now, but Aussies all over the country are already scrambling in the stores and supermarkets for gifts to give their mums and the mum-like figures in their lives.

In the past few days, many shoppers have also opted to go out and search for gifts and presents for Mother's Day, before retail stores all over the country officially bring the holiday hype to the general public.

However, it seems that not everyone is satisfied with what Woolies has to offer.

One Woolies customer has spoken to 7NEWS about her disappointment regarding the latest Mother's Day buys at her local store.

While browsing the range of gift ideas on the supermarket shelves, Shelley from NSW was left frustrated when she made an "un-Australian" discovery among the items.

Apparently, there was a framed print among the displays that included a floral design and the words: "Best Mom Ever".

This would have been fine and all except for one glaring detail – the picture frame included the American spelling of the word "Mom", instead of "Mum”, which is obviously how we spell the word in Australian English.

"Pretty disappointed at the spelling of 'mum'," Shelley said. "Last time I checked, we're living in Australia and Woolies is an Australian store."

The mum added that she doesn't want her kids giving her presents with the word "mom" on them, since she is not an American.

"This is just un-Australian," she said. "Lift your game, Woolies."

Aside from giving them gifts and presents, there are many more ways for people to appreciate their mums and the mum-figures (stepmums, relatives, guardians, close family friends, etc.) in their lives.

You can also use the weekend to attend various Mother's Day events and activities, such as:
  • Organised walks or runs to raise money for causes such as breast cancer research.
  • Visits to the zoo, movies, botanical gardens, or other places of interest.
  • Breakfasts, brunches, lunches, afternoon teas or dinners at restaurants, cafes, or at home.
  • Having a picnic in the park or the beach, if the weather allows it.

Sounds like me when l tell my grandkids it’s lollies not candy, we aren’t American

I`m a true blue Aussie .and extremely proud to be however I am not offended with the spelling of Mom. My older kids, in their 40`s, and my teenager have had to put up with me calling myself Mom since their birth. It has got to do with having a former boyfriend that was American. That is the only " American " word I do use or allow.

how dare they!!

While I share her irritation/frustration at the US spelling, I'm afraid she'll be shocked when she starts looking closer as she'll find US spelling everywhere!

I absolutely agree. I also become very irritated when I hear an Australian actor say “Mom” in movies made for international audiences! There is too much Americanisms creeping into our Aussie dialect!

Are we getting so precious that a word can now set us off on a rant. It is just marketing. Dont buy it if it offends. Or buy it and alter it yourself. There are so many more tragic things happening in the world at the moment that this is quite irrelevant.

Unfortunately many younger Australians will not notice the incorrect spelling because they are so immersed in American culture.

Perhaps there are American Mom's living here who would appreciate it

blame Microsoft/ Windows for the spelling errors that we constantly see and for the fact that the younger generations spell most words incorrectly as the automatic red line through a word if it is not spelt the American way has them believing that the English language spelling is incorrect. It is a pet peeve of mine ,Any Teacher from the time before the computer age, would be horrified at what has been done to the English language

Yeah it’s disappointing to see in an Australian supermarket, but to talk to 7news about it…really?!?!?! 🤪🤪🤪

I am disappointed at the "Americanisation" of our English language, not just the spelling but also the pronunciation of now so many words, ceramoany, contraversy, etc., etc. The spelling i have used is to highlight the way it is said in America.

Easy don't buy it . I too am saddened by all the Americanisms that have become everyday language. Whats wrong with toilet , biscuit, lollies, rolls the list goes on. Speak Aussie i say .
