Money expert reveals the $2 coins that could be worth HUNDREDS of dollars!
Last year, we shared a story about how your loose change could be worth a fortune.

For those of you who failed to find some of the valuable coins and banknotes mentioned by money expert Joel Kandiah in his previous TikTok videos, don't go spending all your loose change, the TikTok user has revealed another valuable coin that could be worth hundreds of dollars.

Joel, who posts under the username @TheHistoryOfMoney, revealed in a recent TikTok video how a $2 coin could potentially be valued at $200.

“The 2012 red poppy currently has a value of $180,” Joel says.

“Due to its high value, people have been trying to make imitations and sell them on the market.”

The commerce teacher then gave a piece of advice on how to spot a fake version of the coin, comparing the real coin to a standard copy.

Joel explains: “As you can see here, they are relatively poor quality, using nail polish on existing gold poppy coins.”

“A general red poppy has a clean design and should be flat, not raised. Make sure you understand the difference between a real and a fake one.”

The video, which amassed more than 470,000 views, took the TikTok community by storm, with many users expressing their disappointment for not realising the value of the coin and “wasting it” on tiny treats.

Joel warned against forking out money as authorities could find you up to $5000 for defaced money. Credit: TikTok/@TheHistoryOfMoney.

If you find one of these coins in your loose change, Joel advises that you should sell them on eBay or seek a dealer who will purchase the coins from you.

However, in any case that you find a defaced coin, report it immediately to the authorities as Australians can be fined up to $5000 if caught selling or possessing defaced money.

Happy coin hunting!

I do not recall ever having seen one but will be on lookout now. Knowing my luck I won't get any $2 coins in my change anyway so nothing to fret over. Good luck to those members who have them. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oi Oi Oi

I knew the date they were to be released, and went to many banks to try to obtain ONE.
No luck.
About a month later, I saw 4 in an op shop being sold for $40 each.
Out of my reach as a Disablity Pensioner.
I've been looking ever since, no go.
I've knitted over 800 red poppies for the 5,000 Poppies display, as a commemoration to the centenary of the ending of the First World War.
Some of my poppies went to Gallipoli, some to the Chelsea Garden Show and some to Federation Square and St Kilda Road for the 2015 Anzac Day parade.
I feel as if I have an affinity to the Flanders poppy.

That's an amazing thing to do, you should be very proud!

With everyone tapping their card away at the shops, I too very rarely get my hands on any interesting coins. Guess we just have to keep our eyes peeled .

Bit suss the picture as the poppy is not all red looks as though bits of gold showing through. The 2018 ones I have are all solid red.As a collector I have several and always buy the latest McDonalds catalogue to keep up to date with values. Never rely on what Ebay sellers ask unless they are established with very high ratings.

This is great advice, thank you for sharing. Do you collect other coins also?
