McDonald's drops MAJOR service upgrade – Here’s what changed

Have you ever craved a cheeseburger from McDonald’s, but just couldn’t bring yourself to leave the couch?
Well, McDonald’s Australia has heard your pleas and is rolling out a new service across the country in the next few weeks!
Finally you can get your favourite burgers and fries delivered right to your door!
A spokeswoman told reporters that the McDelivery is now available in participating stores across New South Wales via the MyMacca’s app.
Don’t worry, the service will be made available in more restaurants across Australia in the coming weeks.
The spokeswoman shared: ‘McDelivery allows customers to place delivery orders using the MyMacca’s app, while also earning and redeeming MyMacca’s Rewards points.’
The spokeswoman added that the new service is a part of the fast food chain’s ‘ongoing commitment’ to providing greater value, convenience, and rewards to their consumers. Though, this doesn’t mean that McDonald’s will be unavailable in other delivery services or platforms in the country.
You can still order your go-to meal at Macca’s via Uber Eats, Menulog, and DoorDash. But McDelivery is the only way to claim extra rewards.
‘Customers can check their MyMacca’s app to see if McDelivery is available at a restaurant near them,’ the spokeswoman explained.
So what are the fees?
‘We’re always listening to our customers and looking at ways we can evolve their experience through innovation,’ Mark Wheeler, Digital Director at McDonald’s Australia, said at the time the app was launched.
The loyalty scheme, which was launched in May 2022, offered customers 100 points for every $1 spent on eligible food and drink purchases using the MyMacca’s app.
Despite the exciting announcement, news of the McDelivery service garnered mixed reactions from Aussies – with many taking to social media to voice out their thoughts.
‘About time, Asia has had this for frigging ages. Just roll it out,’ one person wrote.
Another wrote: ‘Who cares? Platforms like UberEats and Menulog etc. have been delivering it for years.’
While another social media user asked if the food will be cheaper if ordered via the app. ‘Or will the food arrive hot with the correct order? I doubt it,’ they added.
And some even speculated that the delivery service may be a ‘hint’ to the end of McDonald’s dine-in restaurants.
‘You watch! They won’t have restaurants soon,’ one claimed.
McDonald’s Australia opened over 50 years ago with the first restaurant in the Sydney suburb of Yagoona in 1971. Despite its popularity, did you know that residents in a small town in Tecoma, went against the construction of a new McDonald’s restaurant?
Some of you may remember that in 2011, the Tecoma Village Action Group was approached in relation to the establishment of a new McDonald’s restaurant in the town. Protesters sprang into action and sent about 1,170 written objections to the Yarra Ranges Council. These objections included concerns about increased traffic and rubbish in their community and the impact this new restaurant will have on local businesses.
That same month, the Council met at a reception centre to vote on the development of a new Macca’s restaurant on the Burwood Highway. The Council rejected the proposal, prompting the fast food chain to take its plans to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) for a review.
VCAT overturned the council’s decision and allowed the development to proceed, which angered the local residents. A few days after the decision was made, the residents began a 24-hour-a-day vigil.
Fast forward to 2013, and about 4,000 people took to the streets to protest against McDonald’s and as a show of support for the so-called ‘Tecoma Eight’, who were community protesters at the time.
The ‘battle’ lasted for about three years. McDonald’s claimed victory and opened a store in the Dandenong Ranges in April 2014.
