Have had them occasionally - had one a few nights ago. No, I don't know the cause or the cure except (if you can reach) massaging muscle and arthritis relief rub into the cramping area.. Actually, probably just hand cream works - or even a massage oil, it's the massage does the trick.
Used to take magnesium supplements when the cramps were more frequent. Higher and higher doses until essentially I developed (mild) magnesium toxicity. Still had the cramps, though.

Change your doctor. Any type of cramps which keep persisting could be and probably are dangerous. I couldn't walk with sudden onset and days of agony because my GP was on holidays. The locum said, "possibly gout!!"
I had previously had a DVT so took no risk and went to a physio who immediately diagnosed a cyst behind my knee had ruptured causing a tear in the muscle. After daily physio treatment and when my GP returned, painkillers, it finally healed after weeks. Never take a risk and seek an answer if you don't know the cause.

All good espousing the benefits of magnesium supplements, when they do SFA.

The authors concluded that it is unlikely that magnesium supplementation is effective for idiopathic skeletal muscle cramps at any of the dosages and administration route used.

Another snake oil remedy? Do the users of this rubbish suffer from the placebo effect where if you take a sugar tablet, it will cure everything from melanomas to autism?

All aboard for the "wellness" express! The only wellness experienced is the bank accounts of the charlatan promoters of this fakery.

I used to get those myself although not that severe. I take half a tablet of magnesium with turmeric, you may need the full tablet. I use the ones from Nature's way. Another issue is your salt intake, to much can cause dizzy spells but not enough can cause or increase cramps as well. Good luck, I hoe this helps you. P.s., see another doctor.

Several years ago I began rubbing BRAUER ARNICAEZE CREAM into my legs and feet which would severely cramp. It contains Arnica Montana 4. I now haven't used it for several months with no cramps. In its favour it is Australian made and owned!

Try exercise when you are not having cramps. I was getting cramp in my knees but then obtained an exercise bike and if used regularly the cramps do not happen at all.

Interesting read thanks Veg.
I've read a few double blind studies where the placebo group achieved statistically significant results unlike the drug test group which didn't. Strange.
However, in the posts here reporting success at low cost and no side effects, maybe we should let them continue to be "placeboed".🤔

Having suffered leg cramps nightly for many years I can understand what David Henricus is going through. I eventually sought Doctors advice and he recommended “Quinate” obtainable on prescription only. I was taking one tablet nightly before bed. Works really well, no leg cramps since taking it. Have been on it for last 17 years.

One of those heat packs with wheat in it that you heat in the microwave always works for me.

A few years back when I started suffering these types of leg cramps, I was told to sprinkle salt on my evening meal to ensure I was having adequate salt intake per day. I also have a hot shower before bed and massage the calves of my legs under the shower. These couple of things have worked wonders for me. Although I haven't used it in quite some time now, I do still keep a small hand massage gun on my bedside table and if by chance I am woken up during the night with a calf cramp I use the massage gun to relieve the pain.

Adding that I got a roller like a knobby rolling pin I use up and down my calfs when stiff and any other muscles that cramped up at times. That and stretching out hamstrings helps heaps too.

First.y get a second opinion by a professional. My husband suffers frequently from leg cramps (mainly at night) & often, beside his rights side ribs he gets them as well. We’ve both thought the rib cramps are the result of pulling the skin to rejoin the large central incision after he had a quadruple by-pass. The leg cramps could possibly be diminished somewhat with magnesium tablets daily and magnesium spray when they occur at night. This was advised by his brother, a Consultant Surgeon in the UK. The first thing I advise you do is get a second opinion, preferably from a specialist with the correct knowledge before trying our SDC remedies. There maybe something else at play here.

I get leg cramps several times a week and have done for decades. They used to last sometimes up to 30minutes! Make sure you are drinking enough water. A minimum of 2 litres a day works for me but I have to make sure I finish at least 60-90 minutes before going to bed, otherwise I’m up going to the loo 4 or 5 times during the night. I’ve also found that a heat pack can sometimes help, ditto a massage gun. What I’ve had most success with is a technique called tapping. Check out EFT, I promise you it really does work despite sounding a bit woo-woo!
My husband suffered from these for the past few years. He regularly takes magnesium and also powder soluable magnesium when they wake him in the night. But the cramps kept coming.
A friend told us an "old wive's tale".
Put some corks into a breathable bag (old stocking or paper) and place in in the bottom of the bed.
My husbands cramps have decreased by 95% from day 1 - we even take a bag of them on holidays.
Sounds weird I know but give it a try - it has been a life saver for us.

Dear member David Henricus, thankyou for your post. Sorry to hear that you are experiencing so much pain. Try to put some Apple Cider Vinegar onto a small thin towel, and wrap it around the part of your leg that is causing you cramps. Sending you wishes of good health. Have a beautiful evening. 🙏🦋

I was getting those kinds of cramps. Firstly in my calf and then later in my thigh, which was excruciating. I started taking magnesium supplements and they disappeared. Last year we went away for a few days and I left my magnesium tablets at home. A couple of days in and the cramps were back, so obviously the magnesium is working.
Dear member Colette 3799, thankyou for your post. Please can you tell me which magnizium supplement type is best take and how many mg. God bless. Have a lovely evening. 🙏🦋

Magnesium cream is a Godsend, for any pain, especially those severe leg night cramps, I know, I’ve been woken up, many nights in severe pain and feeling like your legs are going to snap in half. Good luck
Dear member Petalz, thankyou for your post. Please tell me which type of magnizium supplement is best and what mg. dose to take. I have a similar issue. Have a beautiful evening. 🙏🦋

I use about half a tablespoon of bicarbonate soda in a bit of water and then follow with plain water. A couple of times a day. Not suitable for people with high blood pressure!
Here are some home remedies but I have only tried the bicarbonate soda and it works for me. Athletes use it!
