It’s no secret that Kmart has become a go-to destination for affordable and trendy items, so it’s no surprise that their new Cosmetics Cooler has become a popular choice for Mother’s Day gifts.
However, one Kmart shopper has sparked an intense debate after sharing her Mother’s Day hack using the popular new product.
In a post on the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia Facebook page, the shopper revealed that instead of filling the cooler with makeup and skincare products, she placed it with cans of beer and blocks of chocolate.

She wrote: “Happy Mother’s Day.”
However, she was quickly met with criticism from other users who were concerned about the safety of storing food in the Cooler.
One woman claimed that she had been alarmed by reports of people using the Cosmetics Cooler to store dairy products including baby milk formula, warning that the machine wasn’t designed to hold “perishable food items,” and that doing so could pose a health risk.
“Do not recommend these for food at all,” the woman said.
“Drinks and food should be at four degrees this only cools to 10 degrees. The reason cans are cold is due to the cans being in a dark slightly cool box for a while like an Esky."
“Definitely wouldn’t recommend for yogurt etc and very bad to promote this for food storage. There are ones you can buy for food I recommend buying those.”
“I’ve seen photos in groups of people using them for baby bottles, it made me cringe!”

Another user confessed that she actually thought of purchasing the cooler for storing her kid's milk bottles before thanking the woman for the heads up.
“I actually didn’t know this and was considering getting one for my kid’s bottles at night, so I appreciate the comment,” she quipped.
While the advice has no ill-intent towards the product, a number of Kmart fans pointed out that chocolate and beer are not perishable, expressing their frustration with the warning.
One user wrote: “It’s chocolate and beer, not food. They’re both stored at room temperature and in warehouses before purchase. Pipe down.”
“She’s not putting steaks in it, people. Chill out, it’s a thoughtful gift, move on,” another added.
A third chimed in: “It literally says on the box it’s for cosmetic products. I think chocolate and soft drink will survive. If you put yoghurt or milk in this that’s on you for not reading the product label.”
“People acting like there’s chicken in it.” another pointed out.
And another said: “Oh crikey, the food police are here.”
The woman who posted the hack then went on to defend her post, claiming that she never "promoted it for food storage".
“I would never put my mum at risk. Foods that perish are a definite no-no,” she said.
It should be noted that Kmart's website indicated that the cooler "can also hold six x 335ml drink cans.”
Despite the backlash, scores of Facebook users applauded the shopper's unique gift idea, with many labeling the move as "genius".
One comment read: “I bought one for my mum in a nursing home, she has little mini cans of drink and choccie in it for the hot weather. She absolutely loves it."
“Best present ever!” another exclaimed.
A third said: “Hubby and I have one each beside the couch, his has six cans of rum and mine has six cans of coke. Always nice and cold.”
