Many have voiced disapproval, highlighting that the store was always bustling with contented shoppers. The online response has generated a significant uproar surrounding the closure.

One common sentiment was echoed by a perplexed social media user who stated, 'Whaaaat? It was the best one—always had whatever you wanted in stock, unlike others.'

Many others agreed and shared their confusion, commenting, 'I’m surprised as it still seems to be quite busy.' and 'There’s always lots of shoppers and people going through the checkout.'

One user even expressed worry for the customers who frequent the store, saying: 'Going to be a few unhappy older residents.'

And rightfully so!

Sources indicate that the announcement of the store closure came as a surprise to the staff as well.

One social media user shared, ‘This announcement was as sudden as it sounds; team members—including all store managers—were told just yesterday.’

‘There’s a weird feeling amongst the team. There are so many older workers here who’ve been at the store for 30 to 40 years that are rightfully shocked.’ said another.

In an official statement to 7NEWS.com.au, a spokesperson from Kmart reassured the public that plans were already underway to relocate the affected staff members to other Kmart stores throughout South Australia.

The spokesperson also stressed Kmart’s commitment to its customer base, assuring shoppers that they could continue to patronise several other nearby stores.

‘We want to thank the Port Adelaide community for their support over many years. We will continue to support the community from our nearby West Lakes and Churchill stores and through our online store.’

They went on to add, ‘Our focus is on supporting our Port Adelaide team, with all permanent team members being offered like-for-like roles at nearby Kmart stores, and we are hopeful that many of the remaining non-permanent team members will be able to be redeployed in other Kmart stores and other Wesfarmers businesses.’

Stores like that will shut if not enough customers spend $. Our local Target closed years ago for the same reason. It was years before covid. People were annoyed and said they still shopped there, but obviously not enough on a regular basis.

I’m very disappointed as I’ve always shopped there since it opened. It really is the best Kmart. Poor form Kmart.

when visiting Port Adelaide (fairly regularly) I have often gone into this and other stores all having had few people in them. Quite desolate in fact.

I'm not surprised!!! Hubby and I have visited Kmart Port Adelaide a couple of times lately and have noticed that their stocks are very low or non-existent, the store in general is not very inviting in need of a reno, messy and only the self serve registers are open.
Now after reading this article, it all makes sense!
I wonder what will be taking its place??

Well here

Here we go again not only bank closing down along with the ATM has anyone thought about those people who live in the rural areas but now retail businesses , is this going to be the norm now, I though we were a prosperous country, but seems not, we are a all paying more and companies are still making huge profits, but obviously they are not making enough profit. Just wonder if these multi million dollar company’s pay their tax here i. Australia or are they privileges. To have off shore accounts, so pay no tax or very little tax .
Our country is in trouble but the government keeps telling us to tighten out belts and stop spending but I don’t see them suffering like the lower and middle income people are, we don’t have that money tree planted I our back yard.

Every cost increase is less food on the table.

This is another sign of things to come, unfortunately.

A Kmart spokesman is quoted as saying 'plans are underway to find employees a position in another store somewhere in South Australia' & then 'a local store'. Is it to be a local store or somewhere in S.A. which caters a vast area? Do Kmart flip a coin & say, 'there's your new posting, take it or leave it'. (In other words, 'it's my way or the highway & period of service doesn't count')
