Is the Today Show's recent segment out of touch with Australia's financial crisis?

We here at SDC understand all too well how hard it is to stay afloat on a fixed income.

With thousands of Australians struggling with their day-to-day finances, our hard-earned savings must be taken care of carefully.

So it's no wonder that many Australians were outraged by the Today Show after they ran a segment advertising a luxurious getaway while much of the country faced crippling financial struggles.

One hardworking woman has taken to social media to express her frustration over how the Today Show chose to air the segment despite the worsening economic situation.

The healthcare worker accused the Nine Network of making people 'depressed', as it tried to sell the Whitsundays — which is known as a luxurious holiday destination located on the north-east coast of Queensland — to its viewers.

Weatherman Tim Davies visited the region and spent an entire week reporting from places like Hayman Island and Hamilton Island.

Holiday accommodation in the area can cost anywhere between $700 to $5,000 a night — well beyond the means of most struggling Australians.

While watching the segment on the Today Show, the healthcare worker expressed her concern over the idea.

She wrote in a post on Facebook: ‘Just watching Tim at Hayman Island. Lovely place, and yes, most of us would love to be there.'

‘Butwith the families struggling financially at the moment why make people depressed because they can't afford these places.'

After venting her frustration about the segment, the healthcare worker offered some advice to the network, suggesting that it could offer more realistic options to its viewers, given the current financial predicament of many.

'Instead of spending the money on Tim enjoying the luxury places, use that money and stay at the studio and hand out $20 or more gift cards to random people, most would benefit from that much more. Just my opinion,' she finished.

In one segment, Davies covered the weather at a high-end resort on Hayman Island. He was accompanied by a yoga instructor leading a group of tourists in one of the various recreational activities available in the establishment.

Davies also posted several photos of himself enjoying his time on the islands on Instagram, including images of him swimming in a hotel pool and lying across the front of a boat.

In one of his pictures, the weatherman was seen holding a rose and standing in the centre of a heart-shaped rock formation on a beach on Valentine's Day.

With the cost of accommodation in these areas, it’s clear who can afford these holidays - and who can’t.

It should be noted, however, that Davies is assigned to assist in the promotion of tourism in various parts of the country, hence the reason why he is frequently flown to different destinations.

Speaking with Mackay and Whitsunday Life, the weatherman said: ‘People will see something cool every morning and think, that's cool, I want to do that.’

'That goes in the memory bank and when it comes to a holiday, it's at the top of their mind.’

'We run into people all around the country who will tell us, we went to Fish D'vine because of you, or we went on Red Cat Adventures, or stayed at Hayman because we saw you there.’

'That is incredibly pleasing for myself and those who work on the show.'

Members, this is a story that resonates with many of us.

It’s a tricky situation – we don’t want to discourage people from enjoying the natural beauty of Australia's coast.

But at the same time, it's up to us all to use our resources responsibly and be realistic with the amount we spend for leisure. After all, this is real life and we should not force ourselves to subscribe to the ideals of a luxury lifestyle shown on TV.

Really !!!!

I watch sunrise and Sam Mak goes on little adventures, his recent one was Africa. I'm not going to go to Africa I can't afford it but during these segments I get a good idea of what it would be like.
I also feel it's like giving the place a review.

I can't see how by watching a show where someone is filming from another destination can make someone depressed just because the person watching can't afford it.
How depressed or should I say jealous are they if a friend or relative goes on holidays....they better for warn them not to look at their social media pages.

Oh they better not watch holiday destination shows...or better homes n gardens as they travel a bit .

Please this person is just a jealous whinger

For heavens sake, what are we coming to. If you don't like what is on the TV - turn the damned thing off. I can't afford a Whitsunday Island Holiday and I know it is for those with a lot more money than me, but come on do we stop putting something on TV because it might upset someone - turn the damned thing off. This person who says it could cause stress to some people - lets get rid of the news - it is stressful, lets get rid of sport - there is always a loser - stressful for the losing team, constant talk about rising food prices whilst the supermarkets make huge profits - and not excluding the banks - just turn the damned thing off - listen to music - read a book, listen to the radio - wear ear muffs!!!

It is indeed a sad world when a self loathing individual tries to dictate how a morning show can advertise a holiday. Holiday’s cost money, but you control how much you spend and where you go. Make the best of what you have and while your health lasts.

For me, it's just eye candy, any of these high end products that are advertised. Regardless, of the "so called" financial difficulties. For a lot of people, they probably, never be able to travel there. If offended, turn it off. The "Today Show" is a commercial broadcast. How they advertise during "news segments" is another set of blurry lines... it even happens on these pages. Being aware, is part of everyday life.

I fully understand why some people would see this as insensitive. Hubby and I are aged pensioners and it’s been three years since we’ve had even one night away. We chose private health insurance over holidays.

However, there will always be those less fortunate in our society. We cannot target TV and other media at the battlers, as great as it would be if we could. We know we’ll never be able to go on a European river cruise, which is hard for a history fiend like me. So we watch others doing this and say how lucky they are, but with a touch of envy, never depression.

I thought the same when watching Getaway where they promoted a Fiji resort for $2000 to $5000 a night. One can only afford these luxuries if someone else pays. Why even promote these exuberantly expensive holidays.
And those with money would say the same thing watching a holiday using BNB.
What us shown is the high end accommodation although most hotels and resorts also have the budget accommodation
We need to see how all works of life live. Again if someone doesn't like it then change the chanel

I’m an avid watcher of the Today Show. I watch when Tim’s segments on the weather. I’m on a disability pension but have never been “depressed” with envy, of some of the places Tim’s segment maybe being filmed from. Yes, of course, Hayman Island is a luxury that people, these days, can’t afford but it’s still nice to be able to see these places. Being fair to Tim, he films at school events, cockroach races, indoor and out door play centres. Parks etc Yes, he’s promoting these places and no doubt it has some viewers envious, but if we can’t afford to go, we can’t afford it, with Tim’s endorsements or not. Do we now start complaining when cars are advertised that we can’t afford? I love watching Tim.

Sometimes I can’t get my head around other peoples thoughts, however they are who they are and I feel sad that in these difficult times they no longer have dreams.
We lived in a 29% interest on mortgage time. I walked into my butcher and he didn’t ask just put the sausage meat on the counter. But always we dreamed of better times.
Thankfully in retirement we experienced them.
So dream on folks , if we can’t have unicorns and fairies right now I can share a lot of recipes using sausage mince.

Growing up we didnt "go on holiday" but returned to our grandparents home as we had moved interstate. This was a great adventure and we were never unhappy. When I married we couldnt afford holidays and I had my first holiday 3 and half years ago, overseas to see my niece get married in England. I loved it but it didnt change my life. It always amazes me when I hear people say I havent had a holiday for 12 months. Holidays are fun but not the only way to enjoy your life. Spend time with people you like, places you can afford and just the little things in life. Holidays always end. And daily life will be there.

My thoughts precisely. 👍

So we are no longer allowed to view pictures of beautiful destinations because this might upset someone. Things are getting totally ridiculous! I think I’ll start looking for a new Planet……

I never watch any other station but 7 even though they have repeats often at least you know what you are in for watching them. I love the travel shows there on Saturdays & Sundays at 5.30 pm even though i am not financial enough or young enough to go to some of these places. As someone else said if you don't like it or it makes you depressed turn the thing off, there are plenty of other things to do with your time!

I've noticed lately that all the SDC articles have big blank spaces in them, like really big spaces between paragraphs? Or maybe space for a photo but one was not used? Also there are blank comment boxes amongst the comments too. Is it just my computer?

I feel there are some people out there who are constantly offended or outraged these days. It's like they search for something to complain about.

My husband and I are both disabled and will never be able to go on holidays here or overseas, yet we both enjoy watching shows depicting beautiful locations and what they have to offer.
Does it make us depressed ...... never.
We love seeing what is on offer around the world, while being very contented with the many joys we have in our life.

If something on TV offends you, simply turn it off.

TV is full of advertisements for luxury retirement villas and apartments with people swanning around in evening dress with a glass of wine! I’m in my mid 70s and still work - do I get depressed absolutely not! We all get dealt a set of cards in life and we just have to play them the best we can!

Tim whatever his name is could report from outer space for all I care. I never watch the commercial stations. Their weather people are reporters who can read an autocue, I prefer to get my news and weather from the ABC where their weather person is an actual meteorologist who can explain the whys and wherefores of the weather and makes the science interesting and understandable. :)
