Is the Today Show's recent segment out of touch with Australia's financial crisis?

We here at SDC understand all too well how hard it is to stay afloat on a fixed income.

With thousands of Australians struggling with their day-to-day finances, our hard-earned savings must be taken care of carefully.

So it's no wonder that many Australians were outraged by the Today Show after they ran a segment advertising a luxurious getaway while much of the country faced crippling financial struggles.

One hardworking woman has taken to social media to express her frustration over how the Today Show chose to air the segment despite the worsening economic situation.

The healthcare worker accused the Nine Network of making people 'depressed', as it tried to sell the Whitsundays — which is known as a luxurious holiday destination located on the north-east coast of Queensland — to its viewers.

Weatherman Tim Davies visited the region and spent an entire week reporting from places like Hayman Island and Hamilton Island.

Holiday accommodation in the area can cost anywhere between $700 to $5,000 a night — well beyond the means of most struggling Australians.

While watching the segment on the Today Show, the healthcare worker expressed her concern over the idea.

She wrote in a post on Facebook: ‘Just watching Tim at Hayman Island. Lovely place, and yes, most of us would love to be there.'

‘Butwith the families struggling financially at the moment why make people depressed because they can't afford these places.'

After venting her frustration about the segment, the healthcare worker offered some advice to the network, suggesting that it could offer more realistic options to its viewers, given the current financial predicament of many.

'Instead of spending the money on Tim enjoying the luxury places, use that money and stay at the studio and hand out $20 or more gift cards to random people, most would benefit from that much more. Just my opinion,' she finished.

In one segment, Davies covered the weather at a high-end resort on Hayman Island. He was accompanied by a yoga instructor leading a group of tourists in one of the various recreational activities available in the establishment.

Davies also posted several photos of himself enjoying his time on the islands on Instagram, including images of him swimming in a hotel pool and lying across the front of a boat.

In one of his pictures, the weatherman was seen holding a rose and standing in the centre of a heart-shaped rock formation on a beach on Valentine's Day.

With the cost of accommodation in these areas, it’s clear who can afford these holidays - and who can’t.

It should be noted, however, that Davies is assigned to assist in the promotion of tourism in various parts of the country, hence the reason why he is frequently flown to different destinations.

Speaking with Mackay and Whitsunday Life, the weatherman said: ‘People will see something cool every morning and think, that's cool, I want to do that.’

'That goes in the memory bank and when it comes to a holiday, it's at the top of their mind.’

'We run into people all around the country who will tell us, we went to Fish D'vine because of you, or we went on Red Cat Adventures, or stayed at Hayman because we saw you there.’

'That is incredibly pleasing for myself and those who work on the show.'

Members, this is a story that resonates with many of us.

It’s a tricky situation – we don’t want to discourage people from enjoying the natural beauty of Australia's coast.

But at the same time, it's up to us all to use our resources responsibly and be realistic with the amount we spend for leisure. After all, this is real life and we should not force ourselves to subscribe to the ideals of a luxury lifestyle shown on TV.

Really !!!!

I watch sunrise and Sam Mak goes on little adventures, his recent one was Africa. I'm not going to go to Africa I can't afford it but during these segments I get a good idea of what it would be like.
I also feel it's like giving the place a review.

I can't see how by watching a show where someone is filming from another destination can make someone depressed just because the person watching can't afford it.
How depressed or should I say jealous are they if a friend or relative goes on holidays....they better for warn them not to look at their social media pages.

Oh they better not watch holiday destination shows...or better homes n gardens as they travel a bit .

Please this person is just a jealous whinger
I agree !

Growing up we didnt "go on holiday" but returned to our grandparents home as we had moved interstate. This was a great adventure and we were never unhappy. When I married we couldnt afford holidays and I had my first holiday 3 and half years ago, overseas to see my niece get married in England. I loved it but it didnt change my life. It always amazes me when I hear people say I havent had a holiday for 12 months. Holidays are fun but not the only way to enjoy your life. Spend time with people you like, places you can afford and just the little things in life. Holidays always end. And daily life will be there.
Save your money and do what pleases you and no one else. If you want, and can afford a holiday, then take one. Don't let anyone or anything else influence you. Ultimately, it’s your money, and your pleasure and leisure that you need to concentrate on. DO YOUR THING as one advertisement says!! Many go away with their children every year during the Christmas school break - and more than ‘many’ see fit to use the credit card to its max for that and then complain they cannot afford the essentials of life. Kids need to be taught the meaning of “No, we can’t afford it, or ‘not this year kids’ “ Why is it necessary to holiday EVERY year?
