Husband’s controversial tip for a happy marriage receives MASSIVE backlash – “Terrible Advice!”

Fostering a loving relationship with a significant other requires a ton of work and commitment. The difficult thing about it is, there’s no written handbook on how to be the perfect partner. Most of us have to go through the process of compromising and discovering what works best and what doesn't — and what works for one person may not exactly work for another.

One happily married man shared a controversial tip for a successful marriage that triggered massive outrage.

American citizen, George Sisneros, recently celebrated a whopping 23 years of marriage with his wife, Vonda. He took to Twitter and shared a list of rules he wishes he had given himself if he could go back in time.

The tweet immediately stole the attention of many with over 100,000 likes but not everybody approved of what he offered.

Among his list of rules, George said that you should always be adventurous, be your partner’s biggest supporter and to always wake up with the thought: “She won’t out-love me today”. He also advised others to always ‘date’ their spouse, regardless of how long you’ve been together, and to never keep ‘score’.

The most controversial of George’s advice was to “Put your spouse ahead of your kids. They'll leave someday.".

Twitter users flocked to the comments to express their discontentment.

“Your spouse is a whole grown adult who can theoretically manage themselves and their relationship with you. Your kids are dependent on you for developing that emotional/mental toolkit.” one angrily wrote.

“As a mother, if this was my husband's viewpoint I'd leave him in seconds flat.” another hissed.

“Terrible advice! Remember you brought those kids into this world without their consent.” A third added.

George also indicated to never prioritise parents over your partner. “Put your spouse above your parents. I can’t believe I have to mention this.” he wrote.

Further down his Twitter thread, George also said “The only woman you should be alone with is your wife. This shows your faithfulness.” which prompted several more angry responses.

“No. Dear future husband, please keep your female friends. It's a sign of maturity and shows that you’re not cheating. It isn't just because you don't have the opportunity to.” one clapped back.

“Why? Don't you trust yourself? Do you show your faithfulness by being faithful surely?” another added.

George’s controversial list goes on with a handful more tips, including spending less than you earn and not watching pornography.

He concluded the thread with: "Conclusion: You don't just 'luck' into a happy marriage. It takes both people being intentional. Of all the investments I've made, my marriage is the one I value most.”

Well… that was quite chaotic, huh? Do you agree with George’s advice or do you have mixed feelings about it like the rest of us?

In May, my husband and I will celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary. We‘ve had all the ups and downs any marriage experiences and life hasn’t always been sunshine and roses. However, we’re now joined at the hip and living a very happy and contented life.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of others, I agree that my husband has always been more important to me than our son. We both adore our son, just to be clear. We were childless for the first nine and a half years which gave me the opportunity to observe other couples. I was appalled by so many of them when I saw the way hubby became irrelevant as soon as their first child was born. Even as a 20 year old I could recognise the pattern and used to tell my husband that in 20 year’s time, these couples will look at each other and say: ‘Who are you?’

Another favourite saying was: ‘In 20-30 year’s time, there won’t be anywhere near as many congratulations messages in the paper for people celebrating their golden wedding anniversary as there are now. So many of the marriages in which the kids came first, have ceased to exist.

So my tip as regards this question is to never forget that the two of you and your marriage are the foundation of the family. If you aren’t working together and showing love and respect for each other, the foundation weakens and eventually comes crashing down, taking the kids with it.

He sounds like he has a few issues of trust of himself with other females. Also sounds desperate to convince himself his wife cares for him and he her.

Maybe putting his partner first is why that man has been married 54 years - which I'm willing to bet none of his critics are anywhere near that ! Only people who have been married longer can really debate his statement to be fair .......
There is a famous quote (attributed to Theodore Hesburgh it seems) that the most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

23 years????? phfffff

You're about 40% of the way to be in a position to say what makes it last

Your partner is the best thing ever. I was married for 39 years. I lost my wife to cancer. I never stopped flirting with her.

I have met some couples who stop flirting once the honeymoon is over. tsk tsk. That's when it should continue, to strengthen the relationship; showing appreciation.

Yes, I admit that I made mistakes during the relationship but I am only human.

@Elbe, George Sisneros (the man mentioned in the article) has been married 23 years only. It is our fellow club member, @Joydie, who has been married 54 years.

BUT I love that you know that particular quote as it has always been one of my favourites. (I've never known whose quote it was, thank you.)

A wonderful example for us all, @Joydie! My parents were married 49 years (separated by my father's death) and all six of us always knew that they put each other first, before us. This did not mean that they did not love us abundantly, but that they were a team with an indestructible bond,

I completely agree with Jordey's advise after 54 years of marriage. I also agree with most of the so-called contoversial advice given by George. My wonderful hubby and I have been very happily married for 34 years. I believe our children learned their values from our relationship. They now all happily married with children of their own. My best friend/hubby and I are back to just the two of us. We have always treated each other with respect, care, dignity and complete loyalty. My parents only advice to me when I got married was that the basis of a good marriage is good communication. We have therefore always talked over everyghing. Good times, bad times and all the decisions in between. It works for us!

23 years is nothing, you can safely say that your marriage is successful when you are together til one spouse died. One of my friends had happily marriage til 26 years when her husband had (one side) madly in love with a married blond bimbo and plan to leave my friend (thanks secret text message). The marriage is intact but my friend said her feeling toward him is changed and she is still hurt.
